Every one of us picked our Minecraft user name when we signed up on minecraft.net for the first time (and every time thereafter). For most of us, knowing that whatever name was chosen is stuck with us forever is just a part of the game. Still, what if you gave yourself a silly or inappropriate name? What if you're just tired of the one you have? Currently, this means getting another copy of the game - but maybe not for long.
Jeb hinted that username changes might be a feature in the near future, something that Mollstam is looking into currently. While there is no set date - or even a hinted one - for the feature's arrival, it would seem that it's more a matter of "when" than "if" now.
Maybe I can use this opportunity to change my name to "MrFluffykins".
For years, the Minecraft Wiki has followed the same visual format as many wikis - it's a tried and true look, after all. For one user - namely, Ultradude25, an administrator on the wiki - this just wasn't good enough. Leading the effort to revamp the wiki's appearance, the community has given Minecraft's most popular wiki a complete make-over - head on over and check it out!
Minecraft Wiki will seem quite familiar to forum regulars - keep in mind however, that the visual re-design was done entirely by volunteers! It is, in many ways, another reminder of just how strong the Minecraft community is, and how far it reaches. It's hard to think of another gaming community with such strong dedication, passion and sense of unity. Congratulations to Ultradude25, and everyone who helped him out on this incredibly ambitious project!
I doubt it I bet this is a scam to all minecraft users!! People these days..... They will do anything to scam people... So annoying!!! SO STOP NOW!!!!! fire out.

You think that the OP is scamming? You think Sacheverell is scamming? Do you even know who he is!?
He is like the top dog on the minecraftforums!
It won't happen unless it costs money. It shouldn't happen unless it costs money.
It already did cost money, and Mojang was the one that decided it would be a good idea to implement the username (in otherwords account login name) as the in game name as well instead of coding the game to require the player entering an account nickname during new account creation, and requiring old accounts to go login to minecraft.net and update their account with that info.
They could have added at that point a warning stating that they should choose wisely as that nickname would be their permanent ingame name.
Due to past experience of online gaming I as many, many, many others expected that we were creating a username (ie. account login name) and password to establish the account that was going to be seperate and untied from any possible ingame name as is the norm with other online games (be it a game with only one character or multiple), and I for one do not recall seeing any warning to pick a good name that made sense as it was going to also be my ingame name.
This was an EPIC FAIL on Mojang's part (and not just for the obvious account security issues), and yes they should make good on it and implement a nickname feature into past and future accounts and allow prevoius accounts at least one name change.
We who bought the game already shouldn't have to pay more or buy a new account to fix what was Mojangs blunder to begin with.
One free name change on all past accounts will not cause mass headaches and havoc for server admins, because as we all know trolls are trolls, and if they are allowed only one name change it won't take them long to show their true colors and get banned.
This is a good news for me, because I discovered I am try to hate my current MC name when time passes(some kind of name collision or, something). And now, I have a chance to change my favourite MC name from "NazcaRC" to "NazcaOS" (Somebody is mislead-ed by RC from "Railway Corporation" to a software called "Raid Call").
From somebody concerns about changing username will cause somebody can evade server bans. In my living place, nearly all people use "Cracked" version of Minecraft (excluding me, I bought Minecraft legally), and "Cracked" version of Minecraft and let them to change their MC name as they wish. As I am one of the server holders, this problems is letting me feel heart-broken, whether this features will release, this problem(Changing names) still always goes around my mind. As time flows, I adapt this phenomenon now. I just hope we might have a new kind of penalty system for banning bad players once and for all, as well as changing names in "Cracked" version.
- And last; famous people that would change their username could have a groupie steal their previous one and so pretend to be him/her. It sounds rather stupid, but I'm can see that would give trouble by giving the famous a bad reputation or such.
When you make your minecraft account, you can't use a username already in use. I assume this would carry on to changing names.
I have an idea (not sure if this has been suggested), re-release Minecraft under Steam (porting all current holders to steam as well) that way you can use steamID as a unique ID and Steam Name as in-game name, also this means once an API is implemented you could use Steam Workshop to distribute Mods, Addons (Skins, Texture Packs, etc.)

That has been suggested, the steamID part. I still think that idea is silly. To be honest, I think the current system is optimal. Changing name is mlehhh.

the workshop part might be useful once an API is implemented, a game that i play that recently added workshop uses it really well and addons can be added in a single click and auto install
I just want to go back to the steam thing for a moment
1. easy name change (using same name as Steam)
2. Unique IDs (using steamID)
3. using steam to login easing load on minecraft.net
4. addons via Steam Workshop
5. updates via Steam meaning no load on mincraft.net
6. Steam can act as a DRM
7. integrating Steam friends mean you can invite your friends to the server you are on
8. you could release tools via steam as well (map makers/editors/converters)
9. steam community add-in (Game Hubs, etc.)
10. hook in steam server browser into the multiplayer (not 100% if that is possible)
if I see Minecraft on steam Greenlight I would vote for it
Honestly, all they have to do is set an in-game name. You ban people by their username (it automatically does if you use their in-game name), you login with your username, but on servers, it shows your IGN. They did that with League of Legends, why not with Minecraft?
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Kickstarter for what could be the game I'm looking forwards to more than any other:
I dont like my minecraft username and i agree that it may cause some problems like banning on servers and such but i think it is a good overall idea. However i think that it would also be a good idea that if you couldnt have unique player id's, there should only be about one name change per month,so the griefers or people who got banned would probably not change their name and use their name credit just to re-enter a server and get kicked off again Anybody else agree?
I'd like to bring up a little point; Steam has the ability to change your name at anytime, but the username never changes. Same case could happen here, and perhaps there could be a command like /name (nameofplayer) and it'd show the username.
I'd be fine with a once a year change or a once ever change.
The name I picked was a dumb old account name I used that I realized in the last year could have an unfortunate interpretation. One I would not want to be associated with.

the username (login) isn't a normally accessible field, the unique ID is the SteamID, in source games during multiplayer mode you can get steamIDs with the command 'status' something similar could be coded for minecraft quite easily

Ban the IP.
A lot of people have dynamic IPs
Say 50% of griefers have dynamic IPs, it would still help, maybe set a limit, 1 name change a month.
