What are you guys talking about, I read about 2 pages of replies and saw that changing your name is stupid? I'm sorry I think it's cool. I've seen some users say that name change should have a cooldown, maybe monthly? Now, what I see people complaining about is "get unbanned by changing your name", thats retarded. I think if you want to be able to change your in-game name you should have to register a Mojang account (which uses your email, also known as migrating), and in the Mojang settings should have your email (your login to Minecraft + password) and a Username space. For example;
The email *shouldn't* be able to be changed, but your username + password may be changed. And as other users said, it should have a monthly cooldown for username changes. And if that person gets their account banned from a server or something, the ban should use the login name (email) to block a user from their server, to prevent name changers getting back on that specific server. Thats what I think should happen if Jeb goes with this idea I just wrote up there. If anyone would like to argue about mine then why you posting "username changes would suck"? Lol.
Yes, but then people WOULDNT change their name. I'd make the fee be cheap.
I don't think people should in the first place, you should only need to change your name if it is absolutely necessary (if your name is innappropriate/immature/etc.)

Exactly. I think that if you chose a stupid username, deal with it.
It will only cause problems with (as people have said) servers. There is no good out of this.
i think should just be left the same i thought long and hard when making my username and don't need to change it guess some people didn't think hard enough
I would love to beable to change my name after a few months. I would really like it if an account name became available if you request the username and it hasnt been accessed in forever. (Except minecraft related names) Because I'm stuck with the name exAera instead of Aera like i wanted. Turns out, there was a retired staff member with the name Aera
The name change idea has a lot of merit. It has to be done responsibly. Each account should be allowed 1 free name change, then they should charge for it and have restrictions as to how aften it can be done. Once a month seems adequate.
The way the account would work is by having an unknown account id number which would only be known by minecraft.net and the server itself. The account number would be banned/oped whatever, not the name. Therefore, no one would be able to change their name to escape a ban.
IP address banning should only be used if more than one account from the same IP address has been banned. My neighbor and I share an internet connection and I would be irate if he got me banned from a server because of IP banning. I do understand if it happened repeatedly that the server does have an obligation to it's other players to ensure an appropriate experience.
I believe the way minecraft.net operates now is that the account name is the only identifier so account numbers would have to be added to each account. The possible downfall to this would be that older version of the server may not operate properly unless they get patched to accept the new identifiers.
This has probably been suggested before, but why not simply have the account name be separate from the player name like in pretty much all other multiplayer games from the past decade?
The account name could still be used for white / black lists etc. but never displayed in-game.

That's the way it should be, but now it's unlikely to change.
This would be annoying because when you went on servers, nobody would recognize you..... I think you should be able to transfer stuff onto a diffrent account :3
Amazing idea! 2 downsides are that there's the option for trolls (not sure about it but there may be three hundred sixty nine herobrine impersonators when this is released) and as stated many times, What about banning opping and kicking and stuff? you could just easily log back on. excited yet worried about this idea.

If the account has old names linked to it, it wouldnt matter what name is banned. They all would be. Its fairly simple to implement this and have zero effect to server admin.

Except when names transfer to other people. Say someone with the username John decides that "John" is too plain and changes their name to "EpicAwesomeSauce" and then "guy1234837" changes his name to "John," but the old John was a griefer. Also, what happens when people start changing their name every day? You get a massive database with terrabytes of just username logs tracking all the past usernames of people.
There's no easy system with which to do it- unless you make purchasing another name cost something like $10-15. You'd still own the old account, but you'd be able to purchase a new name for a discounted - but not significantly discounted - price. If you make it too cheap people make 20 accounts and grief servers. If you make it too expensive, you ruin the point. Any other way and it's just not practical enough and not worth it.
It won't happen unless it costs money. It shouldn't happen unless it costs money.
Username: iChangedMyName
Email: [email protected]
password: password123

Exactly! If you come up with a creative username, the next day, everyone has it.
Not if you are not allowed to take names others use or have recently used.
My IGN is Modertator
Some would call that clever
Next day, 100s of people with IGNs
Modertater
M0dertator
Mod3rtater
etc.
If it was a fee to change username, not as many people would steal it.

Some of us didn't know every single server we'd play on would have our name on top of us.
Some of us played before multiplayer was around.
