If this is added, it should be free. Most of us registered without knowing that our login would be our IGN. Perhaps, being able to change it once per month (Like other games)? That would be rather nice. Though you would still need to log in with the same account.
Why is it so hard for people to wrap their heads around this?
Username displayed in-game =/= User ID OR IP address
Look at other platforms for games like Steam: I Have a permanent ID associated with my account, but that doesn't stop me from changing my in-game named whenever I feel like it. Admins who would want to ban me (Notch forbid it) would ban my ID or IP address, it doesn't MATTER what my in-game name displayed.
It's a really simple work-around, guys.
And possibly be able to change your email? I've been dying to do so. Lol. I forgot that email's password.

Does your Minecraft server need a website? Don't worry, I can make it for you and make it look as nice as the minecraftforums! I charge as low as $10-$15! PM me for more details.
Well some servers can still use a person's ip to ban them. maybe if they can figure out a way so that even if u do play somewhere else they would still know... who knows im just happy that this is happening i hate my name so much now. only reason is cause i feel my skin needs to be what relates.
I'm sorry, but I despise this idea of changing names. Sure, I regret my name, and more so down the track because I chose it from what bullies used to call me, but honestly let's look at the pros and cons of this.
Pros:
1. You can have a cool new username.
Cons:
1. Server Owners can't ban you if you change your name.
2. It is morally confusing for people to distinguish you.
3. It's going to cause many problems down the track, whether system overloads at Mojang, or debates of innapropriateness.
This is why I don't condone this new idea Jeb brought to mind, it's just plain horrible and will lead to a new level of griefing.
In regards to your #1 con, you need not worry. The idea is there will be some unique way to identify the minecraft account. This would be invisible to the user, but how accounts would be uniquely identified, and thus used by server admins to ban/whitelist. What they would do is give users some kind of Display name to enter in, which does not need to be unique and would allow players to change names at will.
Con #2 I don't need to touch, I'll refer to services such as "Steam", people on my list alias all the time, and while they do many people use it legitimately. I see no reason to stifle legitimate use over a small bunch that will grief. Griefers are always going to grief, they will find other ways.
Con #3 is moot. This wouldn't cause system overloads. You are changing one tiny textbased field in a database. Not unless the entirety of the minecraft community decided to all change their name at once would this cause a hiccup. As for "innapropriateness", I'll refer to the language packs in minecraft. That project has been a great success despite some of the very inappropriate things that have happened. Again, griefers are going to grief, don't stifle something legitimate because of it.
THANK GOD. "toatanu" comes from a LEGO BIONICLE character (Toa Tanu) I made a while ago and I was too damn lazy to make a better username, so I am currently stuck with that. As soon as I can I'll change it to a common gaming alias of mine, probably Ithiriz (From Runes of Magic, Osha server if anyone plays that) or a better-sounding alternate of that that I won't disclose. Also, toatanu gets misspelled toatuna too much, and I don't really like having "toat" as a common chat abbreviation. Ith or Ithir is better.
But that is your problem you didn't take action to find out, you should of at least tried to acknowledge the possibility. Also, if it was free to sign up, you could just easily change your name whenever, making your username feel useless. Unless it's once per month or something.
That's great and all but when I bought minecraft well over a year ago there was NOTHING that said your minecraft.net name would be your in game name or I would have used something other than my real name. I've had a couple people approach me about doing an LP but I've declined each time because quite frankly I don't want my real name plastered everywhere. Personally I welcome the ability to change it in the future even if there is a small fee to do so. Sure I could register a new account with the name I'd change it to but then I'd lose my cool minecon cape.
Username changes will sure bring a lot of trouble with them;
- Bans, as said before, could only be worked around through unique player ID's and this shouldn't be more than a simple database column addition (if it's not already there).
- Friendlists, if ever imported, should be based on these ID's as well to prevent having a random friend at once.
- And last; famous people that would change their username could have a groupie steal their previous one and so pretend to be him/her. It sounds rather stupid, but I'm can see that would give trouble by giving the famous a bad reputation or such.
Anyway, if they insert username changes they should consider a lot of things before randomly messing with names.
Maybe, they should do 1 name change per year? or just a one time thing. Cause i sure have been waiting for this... Just thought maybe id put some kind of input in. Make it a 1 time a year thing or just one name change per account?
Ha! Yes, this is fantastic. I had a thread on name changing in suggestions, but it got deleted (never found out why though, never could find any other name change threads, surprisingly). Ah well, I'm just as grateful now as I would have been. Thanks Molstam! (P.S. The first suggestion for your name on my computer is "Molestation" LOL.

For those of you whining about how allowing display name changes would cause griefing problems, look at the way Steam does it - you have a total of 3 (4 if you want to split hairs) methods of identification - 2 of them do not change, period. You have your username, which is used for the express purpose of signing in to Steam, your SteamID (a numerical identifier for your account, think of it as your account's serial number), which is used for authentication and identity confirmation with game servers, your display name (only utilized in client-involved situations such as games, profiles, etc.). You also have your Community page identifier, but that doesn't apply to MC. People change their display name all the time, as many times as they feel like. It doesn't cost a dime, and it has no effect on bans.
TL;DR: Display names, which are seperate from usernames, would be the way to do this.
Also, about that new Wiki skin. I have to say, when I first saw the news about the skin changing, I thought "Great. Someone thought they'd trash the Vector skin for a crappy home-made one and now it's going to look like ****." However, once I loaded the main page, I was pleasantly surprised - everything was neat and still laid out like Vector was, with the theme of Minecraft incorporated perfectly. Well done.
Minecraft isn't ready for this kind of thing, yet (usernames).
Also if they did make it so u could change your username I would expect them to assign a serial number to everyone so servers could keep track of people and banning.
Overall I think it's a bad idea for a game like minecraft, if you truly want to change your username buy it again. (or just accept your username and make it your own)

Only if they force it to be unique, and there is no need to make a display name unique.
