That's actually brilliant. I just got done making a copy of my painterly pack and hammering the sound pack I wanted and multiple custom textures I've collected from adventure maps together. It was very difficult, and I have to rebuild it from scratch every time we have an update that adds new textures.
>update painterly pack
>go grab all the custom sounds/textures again
>stuff them in said painterly pack
>finally I can play again
This seems so much better. Would I be able to have the default pack, then overlay it with an outdated custom texture pack, so that newly added textures are vanilla rather than invisible?
Someone better make a mod to override server textures with player chosen ones. Servers will never get the texture right for everyone. And I'm certainly not using someone else's textures over my own custom ones.
No need. You can already set this in the default options.
I am so painfully stoked about this, serious joy-gasm! Now my son can have his own pack that only changes his armor to full length armor and the bows to guns while still using the pack that I made for me without having to sort through and parse out what needs to go where!
What if you have 2 texturepacks with all the files a texturepack would need (with sound and everything), Placing one ontop of the other would just totally override the other texturepack??
I guess the only way this would be useful, is when one texturepack is missing textures, and the other one has those missing textures as it would fill in the spaces for the top one?
I think it'd be cool with a system where you can pick for example dirt.png from one pack and switch it out with another dirt.png in another texurepack IN the client itself >.<
I still don't see why anyone would want to do that
If I could have different resource packs for different saved games, or for different areas of a world, that might be somewhat useful... but this I just don't get

Yea, You can make as many packs as you need to work for you. So you can make your painterly, put the pack with the custom textures Above that so it would override any conflicts with the painterly and make a pack for sounds, then update all three individually when you need to. The last pack in the "stack" will always be vanilla so if you have an outdated pack or something new comes up it will pull the texture from vanilla (actually it -should- already pull missing textures from vanilla if you're playing in 1.6)
i thought resourcepack makers like you would get it easier than most others....
now it's easier to handle half-finished RP's
now RP's that only change a few items,sounds,mobs,texts,....
can be easily combined with 1,2,3,4.... other RP's.
and same for mod textures...
Yeah, so what's the point? Nobody downloads resource packs that "only change a few items, sounds, mobs, texts".

Why wouldn't they? For instance with my pack, not everyone wants to run around in a chainmail bikini. meaning that I could make another pack that's just armor so dudes wouldn't have to dress like chicks. Or someone wants a HD font, and my textures, They can actually get that now. I don't understand your irritation at this being pointless, this opens endless possibilities.

Resource packs can already have alternate textures. Just look at Glimmar. He's got a ton of 'em.
And for the record, I'm not irritated. Just baffled.
This makes it easier. Way easier. There's no adding sounds to the texture pack, there's no jamming the armor you want in and taking the one you don't out. Especially if you want stuff from more than one person. Then you don't have to make your personalized pack again every time one of your packs updates. You just update that pack and go on with your life.
People must be really dumb to believe in this.
Want your favorite textures? Ok.
And also your favorite sounds?
WELL, just drag the sounds from the pack to your favorite pack =
DONE!
Also, this is useless because I KNOW it will lag a much, and have bugs, doing my way prevents crashes and everything.
Plain useless.
You don't know it will cause bugs, or lag, because you are not Mojang, this way is faster and much simpler

Just because you don't doesn't mean others don't either. Take the Retro texture pack for example, what if I want to use those textures, but use another that actually has retro sounds?
Nice add-on However I will still continue manually adding to my own even from other packs as seeing that my texture / recourse pack is for private use only and having 1 is easier to use that 2 - 3 or even 4. But this will make testing textures / sounds easier. Will be able to see / hear things before I add them.
I knew they'd add something like this sooner or later, because it's crucial for the Plugin API to work, especially to be able to have multiple mods and be able to configure their load order; an approach which other mod-eccentric game developers like Bethesda have used in the past. It's quite obvious this is just a step towards the API.

I know, but you can't force players to use them atm
