Why not, indeed! So here are some answers to your questions, from Mojang CEO Carl Manneh!
Realms Q&A:
Will this service limit you to only allowing people to reach your server if they are in your area?
Anyone who the server 'owner' white lists can join your server, from anywhere in the world. Obviously you'll get better performance if you are geographically closer to the actual server.
Will it allow you to add plugins?
Starting out it will be vanilla Minecraft only, but as our API matures and Realms is further developed, some sort of plugin connection may be possible.
Will players have something like FTP access, to upload worlds, mods, and manage server settings?
Yes there will be a settings panel for the server owner. It will be quite limited from the beginning, but will be built out as the service develops.
Is this service aiming to replace third-party hosting?
No. We will not be able to provide all the options and features third-party hosting provides, so there will definitely be a need for third party hosting.
There you have it, even more goodies on the upcoming Realms service! A big "thank you" to Carl for giving us some insight into Realms, and answering users' questions directly!
Minscraft realms seems rather interesting, however, what i am really wondering is what sort of impact it will cause on small community servers. Will Minecraft Realms draw in more traffic to Minecraft to make up for the loss of players to small community servers, or will most of them shut down? Lets just hope that if most of them do go down, it's the ones with corrupt money hungry owners...

I don't think that any of the big servers will have to worry about Minecraft Realms at all. I see it more as something that a group of friends can all pitch in a few bucks for to get a private server that doesn't require any setup. If my friends decide to do that, I'll certainly join, but I doubt I'll stop playing on my favorite larger server.

I really want to know what the subscriptions will be like. Minecraft has grown even further. It started out as a small game, but it has expanded widely. Sure it may take a few hours to complete (Probably 2), but there are so many things you can do, such things as getting all the wool colours, getting all the ore blocks (y u no add coal block?), getting the music disks and even beating both bosses. They've also done some sneaky things. It's pretty expansive, yet it is kinda linear. To get to the ender dragon, you have to get wood, then get stone, then iron, then diamond, get obsidian, go to the nether, find fortress, blaze spawner, blaze powder, kill endermen for ender pearls, make >12 eye of enders, find the stronghold and of course, beat the ender dragon. It's not a game that is meant to be short. But that's just singleplayer stuff. Multiplayer adds SO much more! It's singleplayer WITH FRIENDS! HOW AWESOME IS THAT! Multiplayer started pretty bad (I think) with lots of weird bugs (worldholes, nether portal bug, etc), but now it's gone from crazy buggy to crazy worldwide! Even though we have other servers, I think Minecraft realms holds a lot in one hand. In it's other, it's got the space for more. Now something I want. I want it possible to connect one world to another in singleplayer, and not just MCedit, or anything. Same for multiplayer, and in vanilla (or at least an awesome mod). I see a lot of cool things coming from Minecraft realms and I will most likely get a server just so I can play with my friends and possibly people from around the world on my own little Vanilla world.
While it's definitely reassuring to know that Minecraft realms will have FTP support, I really want to know more details about it. It's good to know that there will eventually be mod support for MC Realms (Hopefully something that makes running popular mods/modpacks as easy as the click of a button) Hopefully, it'll be accessable in-game so I don't have to open up a browser anytime I want to change something in my server. I also think it would be great if there was a way for a host to upload a world directly from their saves folder.

It shouldn't impact small community servers much. The most likely outcome, if Minecraft Relams is done well, is that smaller communities will move from hosting an expensive, unreliable server, to purchasing an affordable Minecraft Realm. My server is relatively small, with about 8 relatively active players and so far, Minecraft Realms seems like it would be a good investment for me.
By the way, does anyone have an accurate estimate as to when this service will become available?
Just to clarify: You have to pay to host with Minecraft Realms, too. It won't replace third party hosting AT ALL. It probabky won't be Bukkit once/if it gets plugins. The max amount of people per Minecraft Realm is 10. Stop asking 'bout it replacing 3rd partays! C:

Honestly, people will still choose third party because not only does Realms not replace third party server hosting, there are also several hosting sites that are more than likely cheaper than Realms.

The way it seems to me, MC Realms is good if you have a few friends (1-4 or so) and want to all adventure on MC together, but can't for some reason have a LAN party together. (bad internet, don't live close, ect)
Then the normal servers are a good place to meet new friends that you may then invite over to the MC Realms to play with or If they prefer to have the challenge of having to deal with griefers. Another point is that some servers have is Role Playing, there are good jail servers and adventure themed servers that you can't recreate with just 1-4 people using MC Realms
I think the 2 may be similar in some senses, but WILL still be different enough to coexist together
Why do you think that all server owners are money hungry?
I also started with a small server, but i never forced anyone to donate. They did it because they wanted to support my work
I didn't say all were o.o. I host servers too, but for fun and inspiration, not money. I do know many server hosts out there though are only doing it so they xan hops to get loads of money..

This looks promising just wondering when will it start
I believe Mojang stated it would be released towards the end of this year
