To really see a stunning example of what AMPLIFIED biomes can do, use the seed "WILFORD BRIMLEY" Not kidding, all caps. Large above cloud land formations, and you get many horses at the spawn!
The greatest thing I see about the new snapshot is the multiple sized nether portals. You can make anything from normal sized to 23x23, which will be epic to walk up and see a giant nether portal. Also it shows the possibility of ghasts coming through and causing chaos. I can already see Sean making a giant portal and making a huge pile of ghast spawners on the nether side of it so that ghasts will "randomly appear" in the regular world with us.
I've noticed a lot of talk about the larger nether portals. I didn't read every post, so this question may have been asked, but...
Has anyone wondered why we would need larger nether portals?
The old 2 X 3 worked perfectly fine. Is there something coming down the pike we will want to take into or out of the nether that requires a 23 X 23 portal? Why the odd size of 23 X 23? Why not 15 X 15 (based on a 16 X 16 frame)? Why not something base-8 like the stacks in our inventory and chunk sizes? Just wondering.
Am I the only one who wishes they would stop adding content and just concentrate on optimizing the game and fixing bugs? I really don't care about horses, or new fish, or making bigger portals so much as I would like to be able to walk around without seeing strange dark areas, and without waiting for 10 minutes for the landscape to load. I mean if I really want new mobs or blocks I can mod the game. Hell many of the modders out there do it better than the devs anyway, which is probably why they used the horses from Mo' Creatures.
Don't get me wrong - I love Minecraft - but it has never felt like it left beta, and that's a problem seeing as how it's been released for a long while now. In what other game would players tolerate so many bugs? I think that's why they're getting away with this. It's probably much easier to add mobs or blocks than it is to fix a bug that has plagued the game forever, and if it makes the players happy to see new blocks then that's good enough.
For finding Grum, he is either the person who took the picture or this red pixel when I zoomed in on the picture : http://gyazo.com/3bb...5621c44ec9c3a31

I believe the main reason is for easier ghast fishing. Besides that, they want to allow designers to be able to have portals in their oddly shaped homes. (i.e. three wide portal for their path to evilness or whatever) You are right, though, there are other things that may have been better to add - I wrote a whole post on it. http://www.minecraft.../#entry24175475
They already Optimized chunck loading if you actually played it its alot smoother than it was in earlier updates
I have been playing it and it doesn't seem very smooth to me. If I can look off into the distance and see a mineshaft from above ground then it is not done. If I have to stop my boat because I don't really know what's in front of me and I don't want to crash into blocks that haven't loaded yet, then it's not done. What other released games have these problems? None that I can think of. It's more of a beta thing.
Well... Partially you're right... It's easier and make the players happy to have new blocks/mobs than bugfixing. And I think it's funnier too.
But, if they start only optimizing the game, people would start being upset and thinking that "no new content -> game's dead", while it's not. And they would think that even if they only add content every while and the rest is bugfixing.
I'm happy of how the game is going. Even if something could be better I like the new content and I hope they continue doing this
And how can you don't love new biomes and horses? They are one of the most long awaited features...
I appreciate that they're adding new content, but it's not a substitute for fixing major bugs. And they're adding way too much content. I don't want to have to spend hours researching changes made to the game if I stop playing for a month and then return. I'd rather return to see that the engine was improved, and I'd love it if they made it easier to install and (de)activate mods.
By the way, last I heard they had planned on releasing the mod API back in January. Was that ever done?
there are more
