Correct me if I'm wrong here (don't have the snapshot installed) but can't you already make a pipe of sorts by connecting a lot of hoppers to each other?
The only limitation to this would be the crafting cost (which is not even that much of a point if you use jungle wood for the chests and a golem farm for the iron)
And I've already designed a fully automated iron farm using hoppers to collect the iron.
Hmmm the /testfor command really works fine if I use parameters like "@p[r=5]" but if I write "myplayername[r=5)" nothing happens :-(
Does it not work with playernames?
Looks like the extra parameters only work with the @ variables, which is a bit disappointing. I'd like to be able to tell if a specific person pushed a button. (or was standing in a specific spot or whatever)

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
1) Makes the game way too easy to get resources
2) Makes mining a pointless task
3) I like to build underground without having to fill in massive areas.
4) They lose their magic as a "nice find" when you're tripping over them every 20 blocks.
5) It's just my own preference.

Agreed. Nobody here (I hope) has a thing against caves, but most people with some sense have problems with the infinite spaghetti cave system (note the singular form) found in all Minecraft worlds, and the frequency of gigantic systems.
Where is the texture packs button? Unimplemented or just a bug? I checked 13w02b and there was still a texture pack button. Tried restarting Minecraft, still no texture pack button. Tried everything else.

It got moved to your option menu when you are in game. should be near the bottom.
Are you guys gonna update now, or wait for the full version?
Both! I have 2 profiles in Magic Launcher, one for snapshots and one for the full version. I play snapshots when I'm alone and the full version for multiplayer.

^This. I love caves, and I remember being so happy when I found one, lit it all up, and got all the ores out. these days, it's impossible to "clear" a cave out, since you'll just keep running into cave after cave after ravine after mineshaft after cave.

I think an interesting way to add to functionality to the Dropper that anyone could appreciate (and not just people who go absolutely out of their way to find magical value in everything) would be if it could point DOWNWARDS. It has proved a constant annoyance that Dispensers can only face sideways, it would be awesome if Droppers could point down! And then anyone could find a use in it.

Define Cute (choose 1): A) Creepers Aerbunnies C) Herobrine. If you chose A): You appeal to destruction and to stereotypes. If you chose B): You are a perfectly normal person, and enjoy the Aether Mod. If you chose C): Please leave the planet now before you set off a nuclear warhead--no one enjoys mass murders, however nice they might seem to you.

I think you have a good idea here downward could be useful, but also upward to conter act the block drop needed by hoppers. So a six direction dropper could have many uses. This will help with map makers and the community in general.
The new Zombie Action of chasing you is cool and also great for map makers.
(Edit) Droppers can be used as instant straight line pipes with only one block drop, with a Redstone Clock powering it.
I guess it's a decent update. I like being able to change texture packs in-game now without having to exit to the main menu every time. I tend to download a bunch of texture packs at once to try them out, and now I don't have to close and reopen my world a dozen times to try them. The dropper block I guess could be useful for people that need them. For most other people, I don't see it being very useful. I dunno what to do with the hopper either though, I'm not great with redstone stuff anyway.
I do wish they'd add some more things to this redstone update to automate farms and stuff. Possibly automated tree/wheat/netherwart/potato/carrot farms. Obviously they should require a bit of resources to get though, because I don't think you should be able to start off with an automated tree farm. It should be something you have to work towards. Possibly requiring obsidian/glowstone/nether brick/etc.
My favorite feature for these recent updates, has to be..
HD texture and animation support in Vanilla Minecraft. No more having to mess with MC Patcher or other HD fixes. I didn't even realize this was possible till I downloaded a texture pack and noticed it had custom water without the use of mods. I'm sure it was said, I just didn't pay attention. But it's honestly one of my favorite additions. Now if only "better grass" and "connected textures" and "random mobs" were added to vanilla. At least as options or something you could turn on/off.
Only here, or the Dropper acts like a dispenser but throws infinite items ? (I put a diamond, activate him with redstone, the diamond drop and the original still in the Dropper)

Frankly, I'm happier with the current caves.
People always go on about "oh it makes it too EASY, it's not HARD enough to get resources anymore!". Except no, that's not quite right. What it is, is less TIME CONSUMING. Mere time-consumption does not equal difficulty.... and that's all that the older cave generation system was. Annoying, at best, when you wanted to find one of the blasted things. But challenging? No. Not remotely. It was actually absurdly easy.... it just took forever. The current system is good for those players such as myself that dont have the undying patience necessary to do strip-mining all the time. ....but it doesnt STOP you from doing it, either. I usually prefer caving, but I still HAVE a proper mine, usually to get extra coal and iron faster instead of having to go look for not-yet-explored caves. Granted, hitting a cave when doing that sort of mining is annoying, in a vague sort of way, but.... it takes all of 1 minute to block it off, and then just keep going....
I seem to remember the reasoning was along the lines of it would be pointless and boring. Minecraft is a game about breaking blocks; if the game breaks the blocks for you then what's the point of playing? It was something like that anyway. I have to say I agree with his reasoning. For people who want everything done for them there's tekkit, which has a handy little machine for just about every conceivable thing you could want to do. In vanilla Minecraft you can still do most of those things, but you have to work out how to do it for yourself with the items provided. It promotes creativity and experimentation, rather than the pre-packaged machines in mods that you just plonk down and away you go. I like the technical mods, but they do get boring pretty quickly; that's why I'm glad that the vanilla game doesn't hold your hand and do it all for you.
Oh yeah, this, definitely.
The techy sort of mods are cool and all..... and also MASSIVELY unbalanced. Like, really, really terribly incredibly unbalanced. They're fun for awhile, but I find I end up just drifting back to vanilla, once the balance just leaps out the window and dies horribly on rocks below. Like the Buildcraft pipes; dont get me wrong, Buildcraft is pretty neat and all, but those pipes.... SO freaking easy to make. The effect provided isnt even close to proportional to the resources used; you hardly have to use any at all. And somehow, never as satisfying as doing a similar sort of thing in vanilla. I already like the idea of carts and stuff for this instead of pipes much more.
On the note of this new dropper thing..... I gotta echo some others here and say, I dont really see what the point of it is? Doesnt seem very useful at all... why would I need a very, very slightly different dispenser? Heck, I'm not too sure on what the dispenser is even useful for... that's one block that never seemed to have much purpose to me outside of adventure maps. And getting items into chests and such, that's what the hopper is for.... so yeah, lost on just what the point is.
Hmm. One thing I noticed. HD textures work fine for blocks, but items still don't work properly. They work well enough, but they just don't look right, it looks like it usually does when you have an HD pack but no HD mod.

Most of ze "big" mods such as IndustrialCraft and BuildCraft I find WAY too easy to get ze stuff and combined with ze Equivalent Exchange's Energy condenser, are terribly OP IMO, especially with Macerating blaze rods to get 5 blaze powder, while in ze Energy Condenser only takes 3 to make a blaze rod, giving infinite rods and thus infinite energy to duplicate ze more rare items such as diamonds, energy fuels, and heck, stars and matter.
Even though they are OP, I still find them fun to play and mock around with ze machines and stuff.
However I might stop playing with those mods after the redstone update, since automated mass-item-transportation is all I need.

Yes, this is what I originally conjured up in my mind when I read the name, like a hopper that will "drop" an item below it if there is no inventory below it. However, the main idea behind it is that like a hopper, it will not require redstone to "drop" items.1

They probably will not allow items to travel upwards directly. They said during Minecon that they want to force players to use minecarts to move items upwards. (I don't even use minecarts for travel, I'm certainly not going to make a Rube Goldberg machine to move items up a few blocks....)
Also, what? Why would you use "droppers" that would require a redstone signal when you can get the same thing with hoppers? The "dropper" recipe CONTAINS hoppers, and hoppers automatically send items to other inventories automatically, no need for any redstone! Just chain the hoppers together and done!

I have no problem hoppers not sending items upwards. SOME things have to still take work in the game.

Nether quartz = quartz block
quartz block looks like marble from the ancient greeks and romans.
My Guess...
