Is it just me or do gaming companies make most of their money off of other companies by suing them for the most redundant ****, rather than from their games?

Most companies make their money by suing gaming companies because gaming companies are easy targets; hard to defend, easy to find a conflict with. It's not the other way around, how many (more well-known, if any at all) game companies do you know that have sued for anything?

O_o i'm with those thinking wtf!? i'm not sure about android phones or macs but, mojang has never hacked my ipod touch or my windows pc. that's what i'm getting from the reason stated. the only unauthorized access i know of is hacking. and avast would have caught it.
other then that i've never heard of this company, and suing EA and square some of the biggest gaming companies i know of, i hope they enjoy getting screwed.
my advice is these guys just want attention, if they are going after the big companies they must be straight idiots. and that is a pretty general patent, you can't sue for something you can't own. it seems like companies of late love to point fingers at mojang lately.
how many (more well-known, if any at all) game companies do you know that have sued for anything?
Capcom filed suit against Data East Corporation (Data East ISA, Inc.) in 1994, alleging that Data East had knocked off Capcom's Street Fighter characters for its Fighter's History game
In November 1997, Nintendo sued guidebook publisher Prima Guides (Imagine Media) for allegedly lifting maps and tips for GoldenEye 007 out of Nintendo's publication Nintendo Power and then making a profit on the guide.
n April 1999, a California court denied an injunction Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) sought against software emulator maker Bleem that would keep the company from publishing its PlayStation emulator for the PC
Sega of America sought legal action against Electronic Arts, Fox Filmed Entertainment, Vivendi Universal's Fox Interactive, and Radical Games for The Simpsons Road Rage in December 2003.

I don't know any companies or gaming companies that sued anybody, but Bathesda to Mojang. I don't take interest in trivial news stories such as those. I only really take interest in the games launched by gaming companies.

Lawsuits against video game software development companies are still pretty new and unusual, which is why it is considered news.
BTW, don't over generalize here... most companies don't make money through lawsuits as if it is some sort of weird legalized lottery where the winner of the lawsuit becomes an instant millionaire, but instead most companies make money through selling services or products that customers demand. The purpose of a lawsuit is to redress a grievance where somebody screwed over somebody else and that first person who thinks they were screwed over goes "crying to Mama" or in this case the government begging for help. Just like a kid brother, sometimes that company running off to tattle on some injustice may be complaining for silly or stupid reasons. Often people just don't know how to grow up and sometimes don't.
One thing to consider though, video game companies today earn more money in terms of sales than the music record and motion picture industries... combined. There is a whole lot of money flowing through video game developers these days, which makes them ripe for stupid people doing stupid stuff and wanting to get their "fair share" of that money (however you define a "fair share"). Sure, Peter Jackson made over a couple billion dollars off of the Lord of the Rings movies. EA games made more off of their video game titles. That says a whole lot by itself. I don't even want to think of how much money Blizzard Entertainment has made off of World of Warcraft.
Mojang has moved into the realm of big money, where that tends to attract the scum of the Earth doing stuff like people filing lawsuits where otherwise they would have been ignored. If Notch was still very much an indy game developer working out of his basement and making just enough money to pay for a new computer every couple of years and to pay the utility bills + food for himself, I seriously doubt he would have attracted the attention if Uniloc.
Does anyone else here think notch should create a "Mindcraft" game now.. I think that would be an awesome new title...
Would be fitting for him to use their own typo, trademark it and use it to make enough cash to fund his legal team against this... not to mention confuse the case by having an actual mindcraft (that notch can conveniently make not infringe on their patent to add more annoyance to the mix)
I don't know about anyone else but I'd definitely preorder a copy
Wait a second, if they are suing Mojang for having a database which stores IDs and a system to check your ID, then they can literally sue every website in existence that is password-protected. O.O It's kind of retarded and smart (from a money-making point of view) for them to do that. LOLZ that android "Mindcraft" isn't password protected, but how you buy it is; from the android market. They could sue for iOS "Mindcraft" too, but their claim would only be valid if the sued apple. Same thing for android market.
Oh so that's what the patent description was, i thought it was about hacking, lol with all the sites with ids the game componies are the least of their conserns, ebay, youtube, and amazon alone are more then enough to crush them.
I'm curious to see how bad this goes for them.
And i hope the no usa sales thing is a joke, i'm from the usa and it would hurt big time to lose minecraft and i would have a bit of a problem with mojang if that happens. It's my fav game next to fallout 3 and skyrim at the moment.

OK... it says cause of a security system that mojang uses on the servers if im not mistaken on paragraph... 9? Yes. Or in their words "SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR PREVENTING UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS TO ELECTRONIC DATA"... and they want a constant payment from it? Wow... they just have to go after everyone, dont they... Well according to their words they say: “look at many ideas. Pick an outstanding one. Patent it. Commercialize it. Reap the rewards.” greedy arent they... Well now they want to sue the whole internet gaming community cause that 'SYSTEM AND METHOD' Is used in almost every gaming platform and social network! For crying out loud! They have sued E.A. for Bejeweled 2 for the same thing! It seems they must have ran out of money after they sued microsoft in 2009 and got $388 million out of it... It seems they want to sue everyone to get more cash cause they sued... what Sony America, McAfee, Activision, Quark, Borland Software, Aspyr Media, Distinctive Developments, Full Fat Productions, Gameloft, Halfbrick Studios, Laminar Research, Madfinger Games, Polarbit and Square Enix... wow... and all after Aspyr Media is all because of an infringement upon patents that give Uniloc exclusive rights to license checks on Android cellular phones... XD sorry... i was bored and wanted something to do so typed all this up...

XD ok ithats a good idea... we should email notch about that

heck yeah, if in just for the irony alone. i can't believe a company of all things misspelled minecraft. seeing as it is really popular.
Although I didn't read the lawsuit thoroughly; can I pointly say scam? Notice how their targeting big names for one: Square Enix-Known by their Series of RPGs (FF/KH). Electronic Arts is known for their hand up in first person shooters (AKA Medal Of Honer) and many sports games. Just cause this company found a way to programming and copy righted it doesn't mean they can go around suing people like poor Notch left and right over them finding a way of programming. People these days with money...
WOW... Guess why uniloc are suing Electronic Arts... Bejeweled. Freaking simple happy little Bejeweled, innocently satisfying boredom for years now, is suddenly the star of a pointless lawsuit, the likes of poor Minecraft.
