Wow, I know the Minecraft community goes straight into "ruined forever" mode with each update, but this one seems like it's really set everyone off.
I would at least like to imagine that the majority of your difficulties are due to this being a snapshot. Jeb's pretty damn smart, I don't think he'd make the mistake of forcing purely single player games to connect to a server in a final release.
At least, I hope not.
The thing is, as long as this is an option and not forced, I see this as the best thing to happen to Minecraft, ever.
My worlds are full of empty buildings. It's depressing. In order to play with my friends, I have to connect to someone else's server and deal with a bunch of people I may not want to associate with, with no choice over mods and while having to conform to whatever rules / politics are in play there.
But now I'll be able to set up a game that my friends can connect to (hopefully beyond just LAN), so we can all have fun our way.
That's great! Provided, of course, that in the final release I'm not "timed out" from my own map.
Someone earlier suggested that it should be a toggle; that SSP maps should function as they have unless you turn the multiplayer thing on. It'd be more work to have it work two different ways, but I feel this is the best solution.
Just my two cents. I can't wait until writable books are in the full release~!

Superpop is so underground, he lives with a Diglett!
Is there any way at all to let family or friends on lan play with you yet? And I have a crappy internet but it works smooth when I play online with this? eeven when everyone is on and its too laggy to load a page.
Not at present there isn't yet. This is just a precursor of stuff yet to come. Hopefully the friend/invite system will be in the next snapshot, here's to hoping i guess

Technically if they're on LAN you could just tell them your computer name (or IP) and it'll connect, if outside of LAN you'll have to port forward and give your external IP.
I think Jeb should add the zoom controlls in 1.2. why would he remove them? ;\
They are "Deadmau5 controls" Only for the minecraft user/dubstep artist Deadmua5
And as a response to people saying "I hope this isn't forced.." Nobody forces you to update your minecraft. It prompts you when you are using an outdated client, but simply use backups, and hit "no" When it asks to update.
I have a 1.7.3 minecraft.jar that comes in quite handy.
I personally love all the updates, this one is strange and unexpected, but I still like the idea.
SMP and SSP being essentially the same? Hell yeah!
If it wasn't too dangerous to do so, minecraft should automatically port forward so noobs(like me, just fixed my port forwarding today, been broken since 1.1) can have their friends on their "server" without using hamachi.
And there can be a command in single player to unlist, or go offline, so not just anybody can connect, or better yet, whitelist your single player server.

You have any idea how unsecure your network is when you have it port forwarded? Among other risks you take doing that crap? smh..
I hope jeb the idiot, realizes how bad things are messed up with this idea of his, and pulls the plug on it..

Completely agree! Except for the port forward part. It would be different for each router, and it could open some security problems if users aren't careful..
I need some clarification on this update. I run a server through a hosting site because my dad is paranoid at the thought of me running a server on the computer. He's paranoid because he doesn't want hackers doing **** to my computer. Whether or not this paranoia is justified or not, there's not a chance my dad would let me run my server through my own computer/internet connection.
Will the ability to run a server through a hosting website be taken away if single player maps become toggle-able to multiplayer?
I honestly don't understand the details of how SMP is run that much but I know there are 2 things I want to stay.
1. Normal SMP. I want to be able to type in an IP adress and be able to connect to that server. I want my server to be able to still be hosted on a hosting site, not through my computer.
2. I don't want to run a server on my computer. When I play Single Player, I don't want the option to play with other people. If I did, I'd just log onto a server. If it becomes possible for someone to connect to my single player maps without my permission through my IP adress, I will not update Minecraft past 1.2.5.
I know that it's a problem for Mojang to have to program the same additions of a game to SMP and single player but it could be a huge problem if the two were simply merged.
Whatever, I still have my game port forwarded, and I am very happy being able to play on my server with friends without hamachi. Your not gonna get a hax0r Ddos worm attack by opening ports to minecraft, thats just being a paranoid noob.
Port forwarding really isn't that hard, I found out my ports were correctly forwarded, I just hadn't allowed minecraft through windows firewall.
I don't know why I had to do that, I never had before, I am lucky I am in an IT college class, or I probably never would have known to do that.

don't install this update!! the mcwiki changelog states that it will delete your texture pack folder, and ruin any enchantments.
I backed up my texture packs, but it didn't even delete them.
I started a new world so I didn't have to worry about losing my enchants.
Always run a test world, or a backup when running dev builds.

Smeltable wooden tools? Do you have any idea what this means?
You can purposefully destroy a wooden pick immediately after getting 3 cobblestone!
You mean 11 cobblestone
Regarding an IQ test to install, there already is (or was) one: You have to manually install the file. Sadly, people put out videos and tutorials on how to install the snapshots, so the bar was lowered significantly. I would not be surprised if most of the people who are up in arms about how the snapshot ruined their game saves are the same people who, a couple months ago, were begging to get the snapshots because they couldn't figure out how to do it themselves.

To answer question 2, random people won't be able to come in off the street and connect to your single player world, the way i understand it, is that it will work exactly like the pocket edition, you have to invite them in. If you don't invite them in, then it is just a single player world.

What you fail to understand is, with your ports open, ANYONE can access your network. WIth EASE. You can't just go, OH stay open just for minecraft.. when it is open.. it is open to anyone and everyone. Anyone can get your network and use it as a mirror for whatever, among many other things. Using open ports, or port forwards, is dangerous. Simply put.
A hell of a lot of people here need serious work on their reading comprehension skills - and by that I mean they need to develop reading comprehension skills.

Alright. Prove it.
When forwarding ports to your computer it is very exact and safe.
As long as you don't allow ALL connections, you are fine.
My computer allows minecraft access.
If your issue is with people coming on your single player and griefing you, then whitelist it, or don't port forward, as you seem pretty paranoid about it.
As my computer is right now, nobody can just go access my registry files or watch my browsing through my minecraft access.
Learn how computers work.
