Well done, Paril, should i ever need to make some skins, i'll probably download and use this, also, dont take anything the haters/flamers say seriously, its like like the PC vs Mac or PS3 vs Xbox360 Flame wars; "my console/program is better than yours just 'cause its the only one i've used, so im gonna disregard yours as crap without even lookin' at it", its like that, so yeah, dont believe the haters and keep up the good work.
He didn't "discredit" anyone. Merely stated the fact that he did not plagiarized any other works as a reference to his editor.Great job by the way Paril! Nice to know many people are still contributing to the minecraft content!
I tried it. Its an interesting concept, but I still prefer SkinEdit. Kudos for having the knowledge to program something like this though. I don't see any need to flame, plenty of that in this thread. I'm not sold on it, and I'm not sure I like the idea of the application accessing the net to upload. Now something I would like to see, and I imagine you could use this program as your base to make it...a texture editor. See a 3D block of coal or cobblestone/etc, and paint it directly. I haven't seen one of those yet, and I could put that to good use.
Nobody's forcing you to upload. If you're worried about what it sends, check out the code yourself - all it's doing is the same thing that happens when you do it yourself, it's just automating the process. It will be used to make textures, in the future!
@dukes You say it LOOKS like it's worse than Novaskin, yet you haven't tried it.Paril, ignore the stupid kids. I don't even know why they are on the internet.
I think he's referring to the interface, which is completely plausible; UI design isn't my forté.
Why do they always post the awkwardly unused utilities on the news, when there's things like SkinEdit?
Considering it jumped from 4 pages to 20 pages in a day, I doubt it's "awkwardly unused" by this point. If you must know, I contacted the main content writer and asked him to look at my software.
Guys,Sure, there may be a better thing to make skins on. There also may be other programs similar. But telling him "This has already been done by SomeRandomDude and it's like, 100000000x better!" doesn't help the creator a lot, does it? I mean, what are you accomplishing when you say that? It's not like he's going to remove the program or something if it's already been done.Anyways, this program doesn't look too bad. I personally don't make my own skins, I usually edit them, but I'm sure some people will like it. Well done!
I'm attempting to innovate, but these people just see it as a clone because they haven't tried it, that's all.
It's unfortunate it's built with .net 4.0, otherwise I might migrate over to it from SkinEdit. Why that's the only reason holding me back is I use Ubuntu Linux on my two computers and Wine has issues with .net based programs, especially .net 4.0. I don't know if Mono is as far along as .net is right now but it wouldn't hurt to consider it so us non-windows users can mess with it. Still, it looks incredibly well built and is an interesting way to design player skins.
I may consider downgrading to 3.5 if it's really a big issue.
Well that's cool, but what I really want is an interactive texture pack editor. One where the preview was a world of your choice.Somebody make one of those, please!
The former will be possible with MCSkin3D in the future; the latter, probably not!
Looks pretty good, though I think I've seen things like this before in several places. I would use it if it had the capability to edit HD skins for texture packs.
It's been done in theory, but I don't believe anybody has done it to the capacity that I have. It can edit HD skins.
Seems a little unfair that out of all the editing programs people have come up with, this is the one that's promoted by the website.
It's not really "promoted", it'll get pushed off the main page in a few days anyways. I contacted the content writer and asked him if he could take a look at my program, that's all.
Meh, Its not that impressive considering how many other skin editing programs/websites there are. All that's different is the 3D model to paint directly on to which is just a little more helpful :/
Well, I'm attempting to innovate, and there's still many more features to come, such as block editing and whatnot; just wait and see how it evolves!
Yeah, well. I'll wait for someone who bothers to do it crossplatform, like Notch :wink.gif:
It's not that I didn't "bother", it's just that had I done this on a crossplatform language like Java, it'd be nowhere as good, nowhere as fast and nowhere as advanced as it is in its current state.
Props to Paril, I think the article just sold it wrong by touting it's innovation. Painting directly on a 3D model is hardly innovation. I was so proud of my copy of Painter 3D...though it escapes me when that was...1995 maybe?Paril, you are probably much better off not defending the software against the internet. There's no winning that battle. Hopefully you have already given up and won't even see this comment. I thought it was interesting to see the comments about software vs. a webpage. That's the paradigm today, everything is in a browser....bringing us even closer to OS irrelevance. Put yourself a few steps ahead and port this into the iPad and you will be golden. I already change skins with an iPad app.
It's innovative in terms of Minecraft, not in its entirety. I even stated Quake 2 Modeler, a very old program, as inspiration!
He already stated that he knew 3d painting existed all the way back when like a quake 2 skin maker was out he knows this tech isn't NEW hes just defending his program vs all these idiot kids saying one thing is better than another but all hes trying to say is that they don't have the feature to draw directly onto the 3d model itself. Paril if you are still reading this, thank you for your hard work this is outstanding. If you made this kind of program to do texture packs it would be one of the most popular minecraft apps on the internet I bet. Ignore the children all they do is hate and troll, this generation of kids are so disrespectful to others and even adults. When I was a child I was always respectful of my elders.. I hate what has become of kids these days.
Thanks! Problem is, you're probably older than me :tongue.gif:
Minimalist UI, Homogenous but as far as applications go this is a good thing.
Has Dodge and burn.
Feels like a more professional tool.
Faster skin switching.
Cons;
Lacks in features, is really a bare bones 3D texture painter.
for nova skin.
Pros;
Very well integrated skin resource platform your skins are out there as soon as you are done and you can use it as a skin resource if you are not very creative.
Provides features like geometrical tools and gradients.
Built in skin application short cut for the dumb dumbs out there.
Cons;
No DODGE AND BURN! I know there is a darken the color tool but doing that gets tedious.
Uploading content is very vague in it's process, I wasn't sure what and how to name my creation.
The UI is very vague and unprofessional, pretty but confusing to figure out at first glance.
Moving the model sometimes leaves some artifacts when you move the camera.
I have an idea, See if you can make it so you can edit 2 skins at once. Not sure of the programing limitations there but it would be a feature that would interest me.
A download never ruined anybody's life. People have pros and cons for using MinerShoes, such as not wanting their work to be automatically public. Give my program a try before ignorantly shrugging it off.

Hi there!
Thanks for the remarks, I'll keep them in mind for version 1.3. It indeed is a minimalist painting program right now, because I'm piggybacking on OpenGL for drawing and it's my first forré into doing so. Version 1.3 will include more tools and useful painting operations for you.
I was thinking of providing an msi installer version for the "dumb dumbs" as you call them, so that they don't have to deal with extraction.
As for editing two at once; I fail to see the usefulness on an end-user point of view. I see why you would possibly want it, but I mean if you can't focus on a single skin at once...
Love this program, very nice features and support.
Look forward to seeing what comes of it in the future! Ignore the morons. If people listened to advice like theirs we'd only have MSPaint and no Photoshop, GIMP, or Corel lol

I like the idea of this very much..But it poses a problem, I honestly do not think that the people that are good at making skins that do not use utilites for their skins, and make them manually will not ever adjust to this utility, but for begginers. I give it a thumbs up!
Even IF this is simply a minor improvement on an already existing program, It's STILL an attempt to contribute, so I'm really not understanding why people are bagging on it. And there is a difference between constructive criticism and baggin just to be a douche.
Kudos Paril for taking comments with a grain of salt and rollin with the punches. Looking forward to making my 1st attempt at skin modding with this.

I disagree wholeheartedly - most of my artist friends use this over GIMP/Photoshop simply because of the 3d preview.

Thank you, Drewbaby. I won't let my stuff be taken down by people who are opinionated and ignorant

Yeah I don't really need gradients or shapes though but it is a feature that may impress people. Your tool is actually more usefull. I did not feel in control useing Novaskin that and the fact it's web based makes things slow.
Ohh I also forgot to mention a con. it appears Novaskins undo feature only does it per pixel. Where as your program does it like a proper painter tool.
I was thinking of providing an msi installer version for the "dumb dumbs" as you call them, so that they don't have to deal with extraction.
Ohh no I mean applying the skin, setting it as your current. NovaSkin has a simple link to the minecraft page. It was a small pro.
ill give it a try.
I haven't tried it before yesterday - reason being I wanted to avoid accidentally using any prior art.
I know. Thanks!
Nova has a very wonky camera - mine is very simple and GL-based.
Thank you!

Yes, I accidentally included copyrighted skins in a previous release, so I asked him to change it to version 1.2 for me.
SkinCraft is quite different, as it's more of a part picker than a full-blown 3d editor.
The former will be possible with MCSkin3D in the future; the latter, probably not!

Thanks!
there is a skin edit am using Minershoes :smile.gif:
no need to download... just saying

use that does the same thing and it even has a detail paintbrush tool.
Actually, you need more - Flash and Java are hogs!
