Next to the life "count", there is another bar (not the one underneath) that looks like pieces of food. Could this mean that to survive, you must eat food each day, like in real life? Just an idea, remember!
A good percentage of them are dangerous? You have cows, chickens, and sheep which are completely passive, then wolves and zombie pigmen which are aggressive when attacked, and zombies, skeletons, ghasts and creepers which are actively aggressive. Notch has also mentioned that there will be another aggressive mob added in 1.8.
Dangerous, as in the likelihood of them easily whooping your ass. Its not difficult at all to fend off most aggressive mobs if you're able to keep rapidly swinging your sword by constantly clicking. :tongue.gif:
I really don't think it's stamina. Otherwise it would appear to be full (colored), unless he had been sprinting previously, but that's unlikely since he is standing in both pictures and it would have started to recharge by then.
You don't really need a stamina bar to having sprinting. If there's a set sprint time and a set recharge time, a stamina bar isn't necessary. It would only be useful if you could level up stamina, in which case, where would the experience bar go?

Being that the combat system is going to change and weapon spamming is likely to be fixed (the bow and arrow has already been confirmed to be), I have a feeling aggressive mobs will be a bit more dangerous.
It'll be cool if the energy bar is tied to other actions besides sprinting too, like faster mining. That way you can choose to use up stamina to dig faster. Regardless, this is going to be an awesome update.

But he also mentioned implementing blocking, but at the same time he would need mobs to also be coded to show them attacking as well so you know when to block.
I still doubt we need EXP and levels. What good would it serve exactly? There's not enough things right now that needs a level. Bosses in strongholds can be beaten with enough food. I can only see levels being needed to determine what you can and can't mine/chop, but that would **** off a lot of people.

It could be used for buffs among other things that could be implemented in the future. Leveling doesn't mean it has to be restricting, but it means you could slowly get improvements for certain things like mining and cutting. Higher levels = faster speeds. Also think of all the things that could be done with a leveling system in SMP with bukkit and bukkit plugins. It would make certain role-playing servers even more RPG like. As well as having achievements for reaching higher levels. I could go and on about how leveling could be used in minecraft that doesn't negatively affect beginning players.

It really looks like a typical experience bar.

I'll farm all day long with peaceful on.
He did mention adding something to counter the effectiveness of sprinting, so that bar may just as well be for energy.
Experience orbs were part of the cut off teaser picture notch posted a while ago, before 1.7.
