I find it highly amusing how many posts before this about leveling were torn down and shot to pieces, but now that notch says it, everybody loves the idea.

FOR PEOPLE WHO DID NOT READ THE PCGAMER ARTICLE
Permadeath= you die with your stuff drop where you died as normal and you lose ALL of your levels that is it so stop complaining that when you die that your worlds gonna disspaear
when would 1.8 be out cause i been hearing loads about it and i think its awesome but youve been saying loads but not when it is comin out so when is it comin out??
if you had read the Pcgamer article you would have understood that it means
When you die you lose ALL of your levels and your stuff falls on the floor as usaual
I think permadeath thing would be a problem for minecraft if its not toggle-able . Since minecraft is also about building, I don't want to die when building a nice house I've worked months on and never come back to finish it. I hope we get some more news on this, because I'm honestly scared on where this is going. I also think Hunger should be an option too, I've played on servers with hunger and I know that hunger goes up really fast. It would just get in the way when I want to do other things except just surviving. That's not all the game is about.
:huh.gif: could someone define permadeath for me? the thread post didnt explain it enougth for me. :unsure.gif:

Alright, so i typed my first post only after reading the first page, so now i have a much more vivid understanding of this.
So far, I'm okay with all of these being implemented into survival, because now i know that permadeath isn't really permadeath. All you do is lose your levels, you still die the same way and can go back and get your items, and you don't lose your saves.
I've played on a server just like this. When i mined I got levels in mining, and the same went towards everything else. It was actually kind of fun. The hunger was a bother only because it went up too fast, but I know Notch will balance it.I actually am looking forward to these new updates, but also I would like an Adventure Mode along with it too, where you cant place blocks and its a PURE RPG feel, while still having these updates in Minecraft Survival.
I can see how all of this will be played , and I'm looking forward to the new changes in survival, and hoping it isn't just a new mode. I'm MOSTLY hoping that its both though, because that would be very awesome. So after reading like 15 pages of comments, I have a better understanding of everything and I'm hoping that anyone reading this, when you were confused as I was, will have a much more clear understanding of this new update.
I know Notch won't ruin Minecraft in 1.8, because he JUST added Pistons in 1.7, which promotes creativity. Notch isn't going to just throw it all away in the next update. Notch is very smart and he knows what he's doing.
And don't worry about the leveling system. I'm sure it will be balanced and it wont make the game feel Pure RPG, trust me.
And even if he does mess up, which is very unlikely, he will just fix it.
Notch doesn't even know what permadeath is you guys. He is experimenting with a system of leveling, and a system of punishment with you die somehow related to leveling, but he didn't explain the details because the system they have so far sucks. (He mentioned that parts of it are not fun yet). Whatever they do add will be fun, but the details are still being worked out. I'm 99% positive your save file won't be deleted. How would anyone find that fun? And how would that work in multiplayer? "Sorry guys, uh, I just died..." "YOU IDIOT!"
Also it sounds like leveling is mostly related to combat. He mentions grinding for levels or playing normally. Perhaps in peaceful mode there is no leveling or permadeath because there is nothing to fight? If you are too scared of dying just turn peaceful on lol. That won't work in smp of course.
The way I would do it, is to have more varity of monsters, as well as stronger and weaker ones. At first only the weak ones will spawn (only zombies). As you kill zombies, you get experience and level up. They take a few hits to kill, because you are weak, and you only have a few hearts - but zombies are zombies. You can beat them back without getting hit for the most part. At level 2, you have 4 hearts. Now you will still mostly see zombies, but occasionally a spider as well. Also, the zombies come 5% more frequently. You can kill the zombies in maybe 1 or 2 less hits. This continues until you are, say, level 20. Now you are fighting all mobs in minecraft, and they come pretty often. Zombies are one hits, creepers still take a few, and there are a few even tougher mobs that you fight every once in a while. You have 8 hearts, so survive a bit better. Suddenly, when you aren't paying attention, you are killed by a creeper. Back to level 1, fighting zombies.
This way, it makes fighting a bit more interesting, because you can kind of know what to expect in terms of creatures. It is fun to try and level up to see how high you can get. If you die you start over. Most importantly, this doesn't have a negative effect on any other part of the game! And it will greatly enhance adventure maps and dungeons - trying to level up to face the boss in the last room (if they add bosses), or just fighting harder and harder monsters as you go through the dungeon.
Combined with the changes to the combat system that have been mentioned (charging bows, sprinting), it would add a lot of variety to the combat.
I have NO idea if this is how notch is implementing it, and even he doesn't know for sure. They are still testing and tweaking the changes, and won't keep any changes that make the game not fun.
Hunger will be a great addition in my opinion. I do not think there will be perma-death. Notch is smarter than to put in a thing that throws all what you've worked hard on away.
If there is a bet it will be toggle able

I don't know about that. I feel like that would make it feel like a horde mode or something. Although that'd also be cool for a new mode
But, I totally understand your other paragraphs and I agree with them. Just not that one, I think the mobs should be kept the way they are.
Trust Notch, I think he can pull this off and make it fun for all of us.
@Saluk
Well for some reason I can't reply to anyone's posts so I'll just direct it to you.

I'm not too sure about your idea, it would make the game feel more like horde mode from gears of war, or firefight from halo. If you know what I mean. Though it'd be cool if there was game mode like that :D.
I am okay with the way the mobs are now and I feel it should be kept the same mob-wise.
Though, I see where your coming from, with the progression through mobs. I just don't think it would feel the same.
(Ex. I'm on my minecraft world minding my own business, building a shelter, killing a few zombies. Oh level up cool.
Next day, okay there's twice as many zombies.. strange.. Level up again.
Next day, uhh why the hell are there so many damn zombies? Level up again.
By level 20, your hiding in your shelter, hearing the sounds of millions of zombies, creepers, skeletons, and spiders just waiting outside your small dirt shelter, waiting for that moment you peak out to kill you.)
I don't really know where I'm going with this. I just don't think thats the best idea. Thats all. Besides that I completely agree with you.
