I have to say that the thought of perma death and hunger seems to take away from what makes this game unique. There are many many other games with hunger and losing items on death (everquest comes to mind). I personally don't play minecraft to "level" a character up, I play to build and have fun.
I wont stop playing minecraft but i will keep a copy of "vanilla" 1.7.3 and a backup of all my mods to use just in case the perma death isn't optional in 1.8. .
Having said that I fully agree with both sides of this debate, these changes are not just a update they are game altering. As such i full understand why people are scared of these changes; but this game will go the way Notch and the team want it to regardless of what we think , it is his vision not ours.
So far Notch and the team haven't lead us astray , we will just have to see how the 1.8 update goes and move on from there.
There is no adventure MODE. Its an adventure UPDATE. Theres no switchable modes it will be the same game
While there isn't a confirmation on any new modes, there has been confirmation of the separation of survival and creative mode and it will be a toggle-able(?) option.
Like in any other game, it seems permadeath is getting a bad rep. I'm sure it will just be toggled by difficulty (Hard, maybe peaceful since it's hard to die anyway.) I personally like the idea of perma-death, most likely from diablo 2
reading this first 8 pages of this thread provided me with all the laughs I need for today, thanks minecraft community.
as for the levelling, well I am seeing a lot of people turning this sandbox game into an RPG- of sorts. Just pop over to the bukkit forums and look at the tonne of RPG and levelling mods. Then you take a look at some of the more popular lets plays, like the Yogscast and their Shadow of Israphel series. all of those are like RPG's just without popular RPG elements. so already this sandbox game is being used and followed by RPG fans. get over it naysayers.
as for the hunger meter. this is something that would be a nice new feature for survival mode. kind of puts more meaning into the "survival" aspect.
and as for the fabled "permadeath"- I say, if its actually going to follow the meaning of actual death- go for it. I would be happy for that. I love hard difficuly, but it is still not hard enough for me. I grew up in the days of gaming where you had permadeath, no autosave checkpoints, or anything like that. and because of that, I easily grow tired of modern games. long gone are the days where you spent all that time and effort grinding up to beat a certain boss in ye olde gaminge days, and then you go in and get surprised when you get the absolute crap kicked out of you. However if it does come into play(big IF), it will be on the difficulty slider, no doubt. I will welcome the return of the popular hardcore games
How about you shut your ****ing mouth. We don't have to like everything you like, and we don't have to like everything Notch likes either. Notch is not a ****ing god.
Maybe its just me being a "wuss" but I don't ****ing want to loose all my hard work in this game if I ****ing fall off a cliff and die or get blown up by a Creeper, thank you very much.
It may be Notch's game, but he'd never have gotten anywhere with Mojang and such without his fans and customers.
Now he decides to **** up the game they paid for with shitty RPG features.
So shut the **** up and stop acting like Notch is a god.
Okay, thanks, bye.
Choose creative mode? Honestly, you're no better than the people calling people stupid for having an opinion against Notch. There's no need to swear and get worked up over this.

Why don't you shut your ****ing mouth and read the PC gamer article to see that you only lose your levels, not your world. Like, really? Why not read before going on a rant, "Sir Swear Alot"??

I WANT to fight monsters. I just don't want experience and levels and perma-death and all that crap.
EDIT:

Sorry. I was merely trying to refute a guy who is blindly flaming everyone who doesn't agree with what Notch wants.
People have their own opinions on what makes a game good, so don't bash them for being upset at potentially game changing new features. Mojang can do whatever they want with their game, but that doesn't mean everybody has to like it.
Let them whine, let them speculate, it's only natural for a person to be afraid of the dark.
Yes, it's okay for people to be afraid of the dark, but this really isn't like that. It's only dark because some people just freak out rather than flip the light-switch right outside. I mean two minutes of reading the article and the last full page of posts would clear up at least 70% of the misunderstandings.

There's still going to be difficulty settings and more than likely an option for hardcore mode which will feature the hunger meter and perma-death. The leveling is also unlikely to be restrictive so you'll be able to play without NEEDING to level (as in it won't change from current gameplay), but it will simply make playing the game easier as you progress. Don't imagine tools requiring higher levels, but imagine buffs that make things like mining and cutting faster.

But I hope there's no slider. I hope there's either survival mode or creative mode. Sliders ruin it. People want instagratification nowadays and it sucks major ass. People don't know how to play games anymore. Now it's all about (pan to spongebob saying IMAGINATION) >.>
It's like if most gameplayers nowadays lose their character or get a set back in any way, they...

Well okay. I guess I'll just have to save the rage for 1.8 if this is done wrong.
Well okay. I guess I'll just have to save the rage for 1.8 if this is done wrong.
Or you could just not rage at all, because it's not very constructive. Feedback/construct criticism is what Notch would listen to. Not some kids "raging" about how the update didn't go the way they wanted. Keep your hopes up and don't expect the worst.
It seems to me no matter what gets put into this game not everyone will agree. I like the idea. I just hope that something doesn't glitch out in this. Then i would be pissed.

Why? Because their opinions differ from yours? Wow, really? That is quite... sad.
