I really like this! I think you should put a limit as to how far you can wander from spawn so as to "not get lost."
I dunno. That restriction could hurt if one had a really, really, crappy spawn point. However, I have no problems with a limit to how far you can wander from your initial village at least through the first stage.
Post-work update:
- With room needed to put in the greenhouse and eventually the burgomeister's house (Sounds better than Mayor to me.) it was time to move the palisade out some. This task is taking quite a bit of time, shovels and picks as some terraforming is needed. Plus side, I now have two double chests nearly full of dirt for the island. I also have started a second chest of cobble.
To Do:
- Acquire more dirt to continue the island.
- Build construction layer of island.
- Build greenhouse at the village.
- Finish moving palisade. Requires the acquisition of more wood for both the walls themselves and the ramparts.
- Finish terraforming. Mostly stone needing to be removed to level the ground and ground level stone replaced by dirt. Eventually clear the hills and trees away from the walls. Also, replace all nearby ground stone (within several meters...) with dirt. Makes things look nicer.
- Build castle.
- Build three of the seven planned noble houses.
- Build ramp down to ground level for ease of travel.
- Connect ramp to village by road.
I suspect that by this time tomorrow, I can - at the very least - upload a few pictures of the village changes. The new houses, the sheep pens, and the greenhouse. Oh. And the palisade. The nobles' town will take a while longer.

Agreed, I'm not sure a lot of people would like that idea. The challenges are suppose to push you to your limits, and mostly trying to get people to do all the challenges in one world. How can you do that at only your spawn point? The cities would have to be spread out.

Internets at home wanted to be stupid so the update is a little later than I wanted.
I like to call this picture update 1 of 2. Everything at the village is done aside from the road to the castle. So I have the pictures for that ready. As for the castle... oi... lots of work still. I will say, the island blots out so much of the sun that mobs are spawning during the day.
Images behind the spoiler:
Here's an overview of the village from the stone tower on the southeast wall. It's the only stone tower on the walls and is the southern exit. No full gate here, just a sally port.
My greenhouse. As I said before, melons have been replaced by sugarcane (besides, I'm going to need more paper than food...) Yes, nothing is fully grown as I had just harvested everything and planted the rest of the pumpkins. Once I get access to the Nether, the torches hanging from the ceiling are going to be replaced by glowstone blocks.
My sheep pen. I probably should have made these pens larger. But meh. 4 sheep of 8 different colors. (Really, the white sheep can be dyed whatever I need and then bleached white again. That's how I got 13 stacks of green wool.)
Interior and exterior of one of the fancier houses in town. Even has it's own porch.
Make life easier - two out of the four new houses have the exact same floorplan. Looks like we got into cookie cutting.
So the mine entrance is also a part of the house. The mine is not deep enough to provide for anything other than cobble at this time. Perhaps once we enter Stage 4 it may go deeper. In the meantime, there are deeper mines further west.
So there you have it. The current update. A new update will take quite a bit longer as I have a *lot* of freaking dirt to dig up. First I need to transfer my excess from the village to the island area. I also need to do a grass spiral to actually get stuff to grow up on the island. It's rather lacking in that regard.
As an update on the castle itself: The northwest tower is built up a floor. The stairs to the second floor are built. All floors in the keep proper are built. The head butler and head maid's house as well as the servant's house needs to be roofed, otherwise is done. The castle garden is finished, though might get revised in the future.

Planned out? HAH! Not so much really. At least not the first few houses. That's why they look so different from the newer houses. The third and fourth stages had to be planned out so I could keep everything in the palisade. That said, a lot of the projects that I work on start out on 1/8" graph paper before blocks get placed. In some cases, it'll be built in creative to check the feasibility of the build (How does it look, how much light does it need to keep mobs from spawning in or on it, etc...) before I commit to it in a survival build. For instance - On a friend's Local server, I am building the tower from the intro to the old NES game Crystalis, which the basic idea was preplanned on graph paper and was assembled in creative to see how it looks. On another server, I eventually plan to build Castle Ravenloft, converted from the D&D Module, "Expedition to Castle Ravenloft" (Working with a 5' square to 1 meter block ratio, rather than 1 square to 1.5 block which would make things even huger.) So far it's been converted to a block setup on graph paper. There's going to be a few fudges since walls aren't 5ft thick in the module...
You should make more of the challenges as difficult and large as the Orc one. If u need help on making more challenges I can be of assistance. Also if you need texture packs, try a customizational one like painterly or dokucraft. I will be watching this topic....
You guys deserve diamonds, but sadly i am on an Ipad so can't add them on this post...

There are LOTS more challenges being worked on... They all aren't as hard, but we have some that are hard, or even harder than the Orc challenge. But yeah, we have our team working on more, most of us are on vacation right now, I'm leaving for a weekend today. I don't want to give anything away that we are working on.

I also have ONE request then, please make the dwarf challenge harder. Maybe add ale in the texture pack instead of mushroom soup to give it a more dwarvish theme.

We are going to make recreations of every challenge on there after we finish and/or run out of ideas. The recreations are going to be harder versions. Such as we will have Dwarves, and then three different ways to complete it (Forest Dwarf, Mountain Dwarf, Dark Dwarf, etc.).

Deleted what i had before, anyways, for step 2 of the hobbits, i GREATLY recommend killing the creepers, and not letting them blow up, unless you have tons of health, and great timing. by killing them, you can get gunpowder.... and well i think you can figure out the rest
And i love the subspecies idea, by the way guys, what would you think of a FCB Server? that everyone could play on, and you choose your race. i think it would be really cool to see all the cities that people make.
Hey warlock, you need any help with writing at all? i could do challenges, or lore if you'd like. and also guys, i have a private server i am playing on now, which won't always be on, but you are quite welcome to come, after i fix the spawn location. 107.9.21.41
Hey, all, you challenge looked absolutely awesome so I thought I'd take a crack at it. I'm pretty new around here so this is actually the first time I've participated in a build challenge. (And I've only done one adventure map - Levi's Nightmare).
Anyway, I thought I'd take a crack at the kobold challenge because kobolds are freaking awesome.
"Hail to the chief, baby!"
Details & what I've got so far.
Seed: Kobold
Mods: The only one I'm using is MCPatcher for my SummerFields texture pack & randomize mob skins. After all, variety is the spice of life.
Spawn point...on top of a freaking tree. :|
I got incredibly lucky in my spawn point - damp and heavy forested.
I thought this would make a great entrance to my city.
I immediately got started gathering some wood and making some basic tools.
Spent most of the first night cooking wood to make charcoal for torches.
As the city will be underground, I'll be excavating a large underground area.
Of course, the neighbors leave something to be desired. It's 2 in the damn morning, no you can't borrow some sugar!
Some cities have gates, we kobolds have a dirt tunnel with a wooden door.
A couple days in and I was starving to death. Finding some mushrooms to make stew was a lucky find so I didn't have to eat my pork yet.
View of hut #1 from the outside.
Furnace (not shown), crafting bench, bed, and chest...all the essentials for a kobold bachelor!
Hut #2 in progress.
Both Stage 1 Huts complete.
Tools, cobble, & meat gathered. Next up will be leather caps. I'm thinking the apples will be the toughest part of this stage.
Same with I. I would really like to join the team. Is there an application or something?
Writing, textures, challenges, I am willing to help....
And i agree with cowiejr, it needs more lore. But not the generic sort of lore for Minecraft; proper fantasy stuff is what you need. I could post an idea of better orc lore based on what you have if you like...?

Nice! Also, again guys, we are NOT recruiting. We do not need any help. Our team is already doing a great job with progress and such. I'm going to put a note of it up in the OP.

I'm doing the elf challenge (because I love elves and archery) but I have one question, when it says nothing above wood, it means no iron. Does that only include main tools, or shears as well?
I dunno. That restriction could hurt if one had a really, really, crappy spawn point. However, I have no problems with a limit to how far you can wander from your initial village at least through the first stage.
