If you are too close to it they don't spawn at all, and if you are too far they wont spawn although that should not be a problem. anyway try leaving it and then returning.
MagicRP knows more than anybody that has responded.
MagicRP you don't show much of your trap configuration or size, but that doesn't matter because the darkroom you show should be spawning at least a few mobs. It sounds like the loading issue for the new map height rearing its ugly head. I don't think Kiershars antennae idea works. I heard Docm77 had investigated this and may have had an alternate solution, but I never actually took a look at it, so don't know where to point you, nor whether it actually solves the issue.
Out of curiosity, I wonder what happens if you put an entity up there on top of your antenna, like perhaps a chicken in water. I wonder if the particles or sounds of the chicken would help the area load properly.
I have the same problems. Please tell me if you find a solution :P.

Over 90 % of the human population is stupid (in my honest opinion). Don't expect too much from them when you post something that actually involves thought.
The thing docm found was that his trap would do nothing until he went on the roof and oddly enough jumped.
Then his LC number would go to 255 and the trap would start working.
Magic,
have you moved your spawn point using mcedit? I remember doing that once to one of my traps during testing... killed a few floors worth of spawning space.
I would try going wider with some blocks like the antenna. Maybe there is an offset issue with the chunks. if you overlap some more chunks around your trap it will get your trap going?

Peppe has some good suggestions.
I do notice MagicRP's screenshots show all chunks loaded, but that may because he was running around up there taking pics and made everything load. At any rate good luck with finding a solution, let us know what worked for you if you do.
did they change some sort of mob AI in the new update because i've built a design similar to this and it only works if i'm sleeping in a bed or for like 3 minutes after i kill myself. i built it in an extreme hills + biome under the mountains does that have anything to do with it
Add a few torches. It ALWAYS causes more mob spawns for me (when I was making a prison). Check to make sure your not on peaceful, lol. If all else fails, try changing the block type.

I offer you advice in the form of criticism. You may follow it, or ignore me in a naive and blissful state.
the light level is 0 difficulty is on normal 24 blocks away
the inside of it (frame rate is beasting it)
the antenna that kiershar showed
thats spawners (the cage) this is a dark room they are diffrent
then endermen spawna and ruin the whole thing
when they hit water they teleport you to

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
