Great machine cannon! (I need to make one of those)
Excellent design!
Great range!
For defensive purposes this would be great!
Here are my 2 cents about this cannon
1. You could make the conveyor belt longer so the cannon can fire more shots.
2. Somehow stack the cannon so you have 3 or more barrels (a Minecraft TNT Gattling gun)
3. Somehow ramdomly scatter the shots (you have a nice crater, but it is only in one spot)
4. Is it possible to increase the power of machine cannons? (past 12 fuel TNT)
Overall, I can't wait to hear about your future cannons!

The first upgrade is quite easy, I have done this already, but in another cannon.
So I have a basic idea of what I have to do here.
The second upgrade can happen if there are 4 barrels, because if there are 3 it is absolutely pointless...
The third upgrade is in fact the hardest upgrade you can think of, because of the design, you can easily activate TNT unintentionally (if you change the design)
The fourth upgrade can be achieved the same way as the 4 barrel thingy.
Note: I may not be able to work on the cannon because of some school projects.

Ya, I understand, my school projects get in the way too. It makes cannon development slow. I have a "Recoil" cannon in the works, but I have limited time to work on it. Best of luck to your modifications!

in the next long vacation i will have, i will make a cannon twice as fast as this one...
and i will also work on different cannon reload methods, because the falling sand needs at least 4.5 ticks of falling, otherwise it will be destroyed...
BTW, what do you mean with "Recoil" cannon?

"The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources" -A.E.
It's a new experimental long range cannon I am developing. Initial tests are promising.
It's a new type of compression system to get the Fuel TNT closer than 1 square to the Missile TNT to increase the amount of force per TNT.
With pistons you can only compress TNT 1 square at a time (you also run into the implosion effect, where explosions cancel each other. additionally, old TNT compression were only used to press Fuel TNT against the Missile TNT and was a little unwieldly.
The new system will use a new variant of TNT compression where the Fuel TNT is compressed PAST the Missile TNT (a simple way to put it, the Fuel TNT goes into the square with the Missile TNT plus a little extra).
Cobwebs wil catch the compressed TNT and the Missile TNT will be loaded in sideways by a piston.
I call it a "recoil" cannon because 1. it fires backwards from a typical cannon and 2. it tends to self destruct (because water and cobwebs don't mix).

Hi everybody, first post here. :wink.gif:
I'm a big fan of ZirumsHero's Imperial Avenger, so I decided to make two variations of it: one is the standard same-plane IA that has all the timer wiring and ignition torches on the same level, the other is a hybrid IA that can easily be converted from same-plane to full-plane. The schematics are here.
For the compact one I had to shift the "drain" one block closer to the ignition pads, otherwise it would have interfered with the wiring below. I think this is the most compact possible timer design.
And this is the hybrid cannon in full-plan mode. I wanted it to have the exact same functionality as the earlier Avengers, so I had to power two of the blocks directly behind the ignition pads from below. In order to do that I also had to rearrange the ignition torches.
So what do you think? :smile.gif:
first post indeed...
i think that you should use the following pattern when posting images (a lot more comfy) {img}image url{/img} (replace the {} with [] respectively)
and i think you should have showed us a pic of the whole cannon so people can understand the purpose of that gigantic timer tower...
i have noticed several spots where you can use redstone instead of inverters, but still, you seem to know what you are doing so i wont accuse you of anything...
from the pictures i see that you have something in mind that you want to show, but you couldn't successfully do so.
I have found a bug in my ignition pad design that occurs when cannons face either east or west.
When you push the button both torches should light up at the same time, yet against all logic the one on the right lights up first. I also found out that using redstone instead of a repeater fixes the bug, but that is not an option for me. Is there any other way to fix it?
i think you can use redstone to work the inverters, heres a screenshot:
you should know how this works, the inverter can be activated by laying redstone on the inverter block...
you can delay the inverters in the input...
It's been a while since I have been here, thats for sure. Does anybody remember me! I used to build a lot of the old school cannons, insanely active in the community. I popularized the multi-rail cannon design?
DISCLAIMER: THIS IDEA HAS NOT BEEN TESTED, AND MAY NOT WORK, DEPENDING ON ACTIVE TNT COLLISION PHYSICS.
THIS IS JUST A THEORETICAL IDEA.
Hello! I have come here to tell you about my latest idea in cannon theory- the multi-plane cannon. Now, due to complications in something called "Real life" (I have no idea what this is, by the way), I have not been on, or been able to test this.
Yeah, yeah, you wanna hear about the science, and the idea. So I'll shut up.
So. The #1 problem with cannons, the way I think of it, is similar to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. When you build a cannon, you really have 3 choices:
1. Same-plane (I dislike this type of cannon, as it is difficult to adjust the range)
2. Half-plane or Partial-Plane (My personal favorite) and
3. Full-plane (These cannons suck for range, but are quite good for very-close combat)
In Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, you can either accurately calculate the position or the velocity of an electron, but not both. This problem is present in cannons, as you can either make it a high-plane cannon or a low-plane cannon, but not both. This translates to: you can either have a cannon which shoots straight and far- but cannot hit ground targets, or a cannon that shoots high and accurately, but lacks range. A good compromise between the two are the half-block cannons, (Or if you have been following this thread long enough, you MIGHT just remember my cake-plane cannon :3 ) as they can shoot ground targets and shoot a good distance.
Now, what if we could make a cannon that could do both high arc and low arc? (Not at the same time, of course.)
My idea is:
Instead of the half-block where the active TNT falls, what if you placed a trapdoor there? Trapdoors have two states, where they can either act as a very-low block, or can act as a full-plane cannon. In the up-state, the trapdoor will hold the TNT as if it were a full-plane cannon, great for short range and infantry eradication as it has high arc. In the down-state, the TNT will go much closer to same-plane, and therefore, will shoot much straighter, and with low arc, making it good for Building demolition and long-range griefing shelling buildings. The most powerful portion of this is it can easily be switched between the up and down states with redstone, allowing for a quick change in the event of an enemy advance. Therefore, this idea, if it works as intended, would work as a versitile offensive-defensive cannon.
A variant is to use a piston, but I hate dislike pistions due to the lag they generally create, especially on multiplayer. And besides, this acts as a partial-plane, whereas a pistion version would require serious tweaking to get this idea to work.
Yes, I may not be active, I may not be able to play Minecraft very much, but I'm still doing science, and I am still alive.

you know, this can be used in automated cannons, to change the range of the cannon...
the other way is to change the amount of ammo TNT, more or less TNT mean more or less blocks...
great idea however, might use it for my own cannon...

I forgot to mention something: my idea is meant to work with a timer like AEtherimp's, to help the thing with the timing for different shots. The other thing is, in the up-state, the cannon is designed so it has a wide range of aim in short range. Also, because this is only a modest cannon modification, it could easily be implemented.
I would like a vid to see how my Uncertainty modification (That's mah name for it) works.

EDIT: I am also drawing up designs for a new type of cannon. It's a fireworks cannon that shoots in a special way. Main uses: under-lava/water hidden trollcannon. I know Etho made his underwater cannon, but this is designed to shoot a spread into the air, in an arc.
It's been a while since I have been here, thats for sure. Does anybody remember me! I used to build a lot of the old school cannons, insanely active in the community. I popularized the multi-rail cannon design?

So. The #1 problem with cannons, the way I think of it, is similar to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. When you build a cannon, you really have 3 choices:

I like your idea, It might be possible to create a dual piston/trapdoor design that allows for 3 firing states
full block (upwards trapdoor)
flat block (down trapdoor)
half block (a slab moved in by a piston)
You know, if the height transfer system is smooth enough, it might allow us to make a spread RANGE rapid fire cannon. Now if we can find a way to make a spread angle rapid fire cannon...
I've been developing some material-friendly cannons with a medium-high range.
So I came up with my newest series:
Introducing... Tthe "M-SAVE.Dual.6T.1S.01"
(Short for "Material Saving Dual Cannon 6TNT engines 1Shot version 01")
Video of the cannon in action:
-snip-
Expect to see more from this series of cannons shortly
I am not quite too sure what materials you are saving. TNT, redstone, or building blocks? Also, what are the signs used for? Anyway, that looks like a strong defensive cannon!

:/ I specificallly didn't want to use pistons to switch the plane, because I think pistons will cause the trapdoor to fall off, if my current understanding about cannons is correct. And plus, I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible, to conserve space and materials like iron. I cannot test my multi-plane idea out, but I would love it if somebody decided to run tests on the Dual-State Modification. Oh, and to see if this idea is even humanly possible, does primed TNT collide with trapdoors? Does anybody know?
P.S. I do have one concern: in the down-state, I think the shell may simply drag along the trapdoor, as it doesn't get the extra height a half-block cannon does. However, with sufficiant force, (6 TNT) I think this can be overcome.

Almost all of my non-experimental cannons have been trapdoor cannons, the arch on trapdoor cannons is excellent, long ranges still guarantee a ground explosion, but we do need a arced cannon for closer combat. I am pretty sure that TNT does collide with trapdoors, so this will work.
-edit- I did some proof of concept cannons, your Dual-State Modification will work!!

Redstone usage is down to 75%, blocks to about 65% and TNT usage is the same.
The signs can be removed, it all depends on how much you trust the people shooting it
That is great! The signs are a good idea, they only cost wood and they prevent malfunctions. Now all we need is a TNT efficient cannon, and I think that Vertical compression is the answer. (it might cost more blocks and redstone though....)

To clarify, I never had a controllable trapdoor cannon, I used the down trapdoors to achieve a low arch. I never thought to raise them up for a variable arch cannon. Sometimes the simple ideas are the best :smile.gif:

Also, when you say that all your non-experimental cannons have been trapdoor cannons... I swear I didn't steal your ideas!
One last thing, you said you still needed a cannon with arc for closer combat... That is the entire reason why I wanted to use trapdoors in the first place...
After all, when you mix these three, you get a cannon builder.
Otherwords,
To clarify, I never had a controllable trapdoor cannon, I used the down trapdoors to achieve a low arch. I never thought to raise them up for a variable arch cannon. Sometimes the simple ideas are the best :smile.gif:

Lol, A long while ago I used that same concept of lower blocks = lower arc when cakes first came out to make the tastiest cannon ever.
