Precisely. One of which is Onyx.

Let’s play good guys against bad guys… Yes. Let’s play that. Are you ready? You’re the bad guy. And when you’re bad, you just run. That’s fine right? Well… Shall we play?
Stone tools are great for starting out, but, personally, after obtaining full iron armour, an iron sword, an iron pick and at least half a stack of iron ingots, it's time to move onto iron tools. There's no need to slow yourself down by excessively using your stone and wood to make volleys of stone picks. Shovels are understandable, because they're not needed as often when in a mine.
Once diamond is available, a diamond pick is a must. You can still use iron for some of the useless stuff like stone, since it's still mined pretty fast, but then you can swap to your diamond pick and mine the ores you find just to save a bit of time. Either that or you can stop being a tight ass and actually use your diamond pick full time.
There's no reason to use stone picks for a long period of time. Once there's a good enough abundance of iron, stone tools should be thrown out the window. I don't see the reason to use them when iron tools work even faster and longer than stone tools.
How people...SURVIVE with stone or even iron tools is beyond me. Eff IV diamond tools all the way. Once you get 5 diamonds, it's not very hard to get to level 30 and enchant, and the majority of enchants do give eff. Plus, the rate of return is just ridiculous. I find 12 diamonds using up 1/4 of an Unbreaking III pick's durability. Diamond, all the way.

What you see in Minecraft is your idea.
Precisely. One of which is Onyx.
Yup. And hey, it's a pretty good mod too. I have way too much copper...
