A dream I've had since at least version 1.3, was to completely destroy an entire chunk. Today, I got iron mining and started destroying a chunk. Here are the pics:
I use to mine exclusively like this. i once made a 40x40 one, all the way down to bedrock. Granted that was with diamond tools. Also granted that there weren't enchants back then either.
I do this all the time. Actually, that's my preferred way of mining. But I also add a extra step - I locate the boundaries of a chunk. In other words, I find the x and z coordinates of where the four corners of a chunk are, and dig that along that line and everything inside it. You're guaranteed to find diamonds, as I believe diamonds spawn three times per chunk.
I've only started doing that with the official minecraft release. Got so much stuff it's not even funny.

It woul be nice to have diamond tools, but a 40x40 is very impressive. I've already found some emeralds and iron while mining so if I get diamond ill be quite happy

I wish I should've located the real chunk coords, but I thought 16x16, eh. Another thing I forgot to take into consideration was that I started on a moutain and I didn't realize how much extra mining that causes.

Well... This is very inefficient way of mining tho.
It's called quarrying and is what most people do when they need an absurd amount of cobble without harnessing a Wither. I've done it before, 22x22, all stone tools.

Has anyone tried this in the nether or the end? I'm too scared to do it myself, as otherwise I'd lose my 'super picks' and all of my other stuff fairly quickly.

I've been using iron and stone tools, because I've fell into lava a couple times

At the cost of the safety of my awesome stuff, I get excellent efficiency for digging out chunks and chunks of stuff. Doesn't take too long anymore. However, I keeping running into caves and ravines like its trying to get in my way.
By the way, have you ever found something unbelievable? I actually ran into a double monster spawner that spawned zombies and skeletons. Perfect for a mob trap.
For me, quarrying also has another use. I can use the excavated chunks to build a underground bunker where I'll be fighting the wither.

Oh boy your right. I spent an hour looking for diamond and instead got tons of iron l. I even used stone tools at one point It woul be nice to have diamond tools, but a 40x40 is very impressive.
