Being one of the people of the earth, you always felt a close connection to the hard, stable stones of the earth. So the day you were banished from the mines was an especially shocking one. Being caught touching the heart stone... Such a disgrace. But who could ever resist the siren call?
But that is the past. This is the present. Determined to be the best dwarf possible, you decided to build your own mine instead of letting yourself perish in the elements. Picking yourself up, you set out to put your soul into a heartstone so that you could stay alive if you somehow died.
THE CHALLENGE
You are a dwarf who was caught touching the heartstone. Being a serious crime, you were punished by being thrown out onto the non stoney land and into the burning sun. The challenge involves four key components, which are to, after the first day, never go out into sunlight again (Night, Glowstone, Torches, and Jackolanterns are fine), never be more than one block from stone attached to your mine as this stone fills you with life energy, never be in water more than one block deep (as dwarves can't swim), and to keep your heartstone pure
SPECIFICS:
1) You can only be exposed to sunlight on the first day. After that, your body is too badly hurt from the bright sun to take any more
2) When starting, you must find a single tree and tear it down to build tools before trying to start a mine. These are your only starting materials. Head straight to making a mine.
Hardcore mode version: You can only take wood from it and saplings from its bloodline from now on to build your tools with, as your heartstone is bad at maintaining the health of more than one... Sapline?
3) You must make a heartstone by the end of the first night. The heartstone can be made of any stone class material other than smoothstone or ore, and must be connected to the rest of the mine at all times
4) Your stone cannot be drenched in water, lava, or be destroyed, else you lose.
Hardcore mode version: A mob cannot be in the same room as the stone, it cannot be hit by a skeleton arrow, and no plant life - wood and planks included - cannot be in the room either (Keep an eye out for mushroom infestations!)
5) To signify a mine, the floor must be made of a stone class material other than ore. If the material is Netherrock, then you must use a stone class material other than Netherrock, smoothstone, or ore for any section in the nether. The material chosen must be the same for all rooms/floors. Caves do not count as parts of your mine because they are untamed, so you must use a material other than smoothstone or ore to let you explore said caves
6) You may use a nonstone class material to make floors in the mine and still maintain a connection to the heartstone, provided that the room is encased in a non smoothstone/ore stone class material (in other words, you must make the WHOLE room - walls and ceiling included - out of the material, then you can coat the floor with a nonstone class material
Hardcore mode version: You can't have a floor of anything but the chosen material, even if there is a shell around the room
7) You cannot be in water more than a block deep, else your connection to the heartstone is severed, killing you permanently
Hardcore mode version: No touching water at all
8) You must be within one block of a stone class material connected to your mine (other than smoothstone or ore) at all times. Jumping is the exception since you jump slightly more than a block in height
NOTE: Even though it is stone class, Wooden Slabs do not count as that is obviously a bug caused by how Notch handled slabs
Any questions?
And yes, this was inspired by the Tree and Water Spirit Challenges
This seems well written out. Only thing is, why can't we leave the walls/floor of the mine smoothstone? Seems A bit tedious replacing the Smoothstone with cobble all the time.

Two reasons:
1) A person could claim a cave as a room. I could add no caves instead, but...
2) Rooms are instantly sealed, meaning no effort has to go in to allow for a dirt/wood/glass/etc. floor
I'll try to think of a way to allow smoothstone though without causing rooms to be autosealed
EDIT: Well that was easier than I expected. Turns out typing on a computer instead of a mobile makes it FAR easier to fix awkward wording

Can we go outside at night as long as we build a path out of a stone class material?
Is it feasible to do this with any material other than cobble?
Once you get obsidian, you can start making rooms of netherrack
I've also gotten over a hundred blocks of iron before (iron, not iron ore), and you can use slabs (although I should probably add to the post that wooden half slabs don't count, since they shouldn't be a stone class material...). And of course the smoothstone, unless you are covering the floor with a non stone material. Mods provide even more variety as well
Great Challenge, good sir. You could say I like dwarves, and I find this challenge to be quite intriguing. I believe I'll start it when the full game is released. Great work.
I've read The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and the Return of the King. I remember the Tom part quite clearly, same with the farmer that the Hobbits steal from, and the death of the Wraiths
The sun part for this challenge is to add difficulty, and I got it with the line of reasoning, "They would rarely, if ever, go outside"
Now, let's see you try going out in bright sunlight after spending years locked inside with no exposure. Bet you would get very badly sunburned, which, in a world like Minecraft, would be fatal without medicine
Besides, this is Minecraft. If you find part of the challenge stupid, feel free to cut it out and adjust it to your liking
Dwarves are usually portrayed with thick skin, but I understand the challenge part. It's really rather difficult to talk canonically without anything real to base it off of anyways.
This honestly feels like the tree spirit challenge but can probably move at a faster pace (by far the most boring part of the tree spirit challenge). Good idea.
dwarfs that cannot see sunlight? dwarves arent ****ing vampires
this is the stupidest **** I've ever read in terms of fantasy related stuff.
you sir need to go read a damn Tolkien book
Because everyone knows that Tolkien invented dwarfs in the first place and his interpretation of mythological creatures is the only one that is allowed to exist.
If you play Minecraft, you are a dwarf at heart, no doubt.
Can you go in water more than a block deep if you have a path from your heartstone?
And can you use redstone wire to connect to your heartstone, seeing as it would make sense for it to "channel" life to you?If you play Minecraft, you are a dwarf at heart, no doubt.

Actually, I've never heard of a dwarf burning in sunlight. I've read countless fictional fantasy novels and I've never come across it ever.
The burning in sunlight aspect of this challenge seems to have nothing whatsoever to do with actual dwarves, and I'm not biting the OP's sunburn explanation because spending years in a mine without exposure is another assumption that I've never seen as well.
Given how the OP's tried to stay true to the other well known characteristics of a dwarf, namely mining and rocks, this seems out of place.

As it turns out, you aren't actually a dwarf, but a midget zombie. And everyone knows that zombies burn in sunlight.
Seriously, why does it matter? It's a single player challenge. You can adjust it to your liking however much you want.

Well, you're absolutely right, on one count. I haven't encountered that sort of dwarf in fantasy either. However, the point of fantasy is that it's not normal.
Also, besides "Mining and rocks," what other traits are there to make dwarf-living challenging? I'm interested in knowing, and I'm sure the OP would gladly take suggestions. It's just that a challenge where the only restriction is that you have to be standing on cobblestone is less of a challenge and more of a tedious chore.
Finally, like the others said, this is a single player challenge. Nothing is making you follow any of its rules. Change them if you don't like them, or suggest something helpful as an alternative. Just saying "I don't like the rules," is sorta pointless, especially in a situation where the rules are completely optional.
If you look into Dwarf fortress, a few good ideas there. To add they do have dwarves that become accustomed to the dark and cave settings. So the sun makes them incredibly ill from ill adjustment to the over world conditions. That or being so deep it burns from the difference in brightness. So nights fine and the moon may as well be just barely as much as the poor dwarfs eyes can handle as it is. =p As for extra challenges, what about the love of booze, or the like? Call wheat barely, or whatnot and figure some way for that need for booze, any other fluid too undwarflike to consider.
Now do we always have to seal walls, floor and ceiling of our mine or does it vary regarding if we have nonstone material floor or not?
If your floor isn't stone-related, then you don't have to seal the rest, but this challenge is up to you to keep. Make the rules you want to keep, then keep them.

Yes you can. You can even make safehouses on the path so you can hide from the sun
Just remember: You'll be out in the middle of the night. When mobs spawn. So unless you're on peaceful, you'd better be well armed
