ONmy first world I didn't no, but now on this world I do use the wand tool from SPC mod to add in blocks faster or move buildings, in the case of adding I only use it when I've got the blocks to build said wall, otherwise I use it to get rid of gravel. P:
I hate gravel too... I was digging in my mine, and i came across a lava pool, i look up and theres a diamond, guess what was above it..... gravel, it fell on me and knocked me into the lava pit, full diamond armor and all :/
I gave myself all those diamonds back......
I do what I feel like doing. Sometimes if I feel like im in the mood for a challenge ill play an adventure map (wrath of the fallen is epic, try it out mate you wont regret it) but most of the time I just jump into technic or feed the beast and build rediculous massive melon farming machines.
Never cheated on this world (2+ years on it, uncountable updates). Waaaaayyyy back in Alpha, there was a duping glitch involving chests and throwing items on the ground. I ended up with a chest full of diamond blocks... and got bored and started a new world.
Why the heck would you cheat in survival? It's survival, that's the point. My cousin's friend was telling me how he went to the End and killed the Ender Dragon in Creative mode, and I was like, what's the point?
EDIT: I forgot that I use the Treecapitator mod, which only applies to cutting down trees. I have used Zan's and Risugami's minimaps before, but I'm currently not using them.

Yup, it's not fun when you do something that doesn't even make you proud of yourself.
Do i cheat outright ? No it defeat the point of survival.
But:
I live on a floating island that i've build legit. When Minecraft break world generation with update i move that island to a new map with McEdit. I just hate when the landscape is mess up. Then i keep playing on survival, rebuilding what was obviously lost, like my mine, in the process.
I use mod, It alter the gameplay. Some consider this a form of cheating even if lot of my mod are just to give me more varied challenge.
While it is rare i use it these day. I alway have back-up, world edit and inventory edit tool at hand. Why ? I've started playing minecraft in early alpha.
-Saved many save from world corrupting chunk in alpha with mc edit.
-Gave item back that i lost in crash when minecraft save used to be less reliable.
-Deleted an hilarious number of item that i've gotten back or in double because of the same bug.
-The regular back-up make it a reliable source of information in case of item lost.
And if everything else fail, and i end up giving me something that i did not deserve by accident, i normally not only delete that item but some extra to make up for it.
That how i play to keep the fun in the game.

I thought I would use cheats or a mod (I'm not sure which I can do this with, actually) to spawn in water. I'm always near water, even in the desert, so it's not as if I need the water itself and I would travel for it. I just wanted to not have to deal with currents along the coast and draining a lake I live next to in one of my worlds. I never did get around to trying it. Otherwise, I like the challenge and find the prospect of Creative mode or cheating really boring. I've thought about playing in Creative just so I could spawn in some things I didn't want to wait for, while still mining and caving and doing most of the work of Survival, but I still don't know if I'd bother.

That wasn't gravel's fault. That was yours. First thing you did wrong was not make the lava safe either by pouring your water bucket (if you left the house without a water bucket then shame on you) over it or covering it with something non-flammable. Second, don't dig up! That's like the second law of Minecraft right after don't dig down!
Why bother playing survival if you're not willing to take your lumps when you do something dumb?

You just said that you dug a diamond out of a ceiling and the gravel that subsequently fell on you pushed you into the lava. Not sure how you managed to accomplish that without digging straight up.
"water buckets are for wimps" lol! But apparently,"cheating" to get back diamonds lost from a mistake you made isn't wimping out huh?
(My first topic! Cheers!!!!!!!!!)
I hate that so much more than them simply blowing up my stuff.
I reccommend typing
/gamerule Mobgriefing false
then no more creepah holes

It's a sandbox game. Who actually cares?

Otherwise I prefer to play mostly legit.
