I am just curious as to how everyone keeps from getting lost when exploring caves, strongholds, mine shafts etc. I often get lost for one reason or another and am considering installing a /home mod.
Let's see... Sometimes I take down the X and Z Coords of where my base is so I don't get lost. Other times I just go by landmarks that I make. Or, sometimes when I'm really lazy, I install Rei's Minimap so I don't get lost at all.
I usually take screenshots of my coor for places that are of important to me. For caves I put torches on one side of the wall so I'll know when it's on the other wall I'm heading the right way.

Its my favorite mod, love the ability to place and name waypoints, and cave map, slime chunk finding, chunk borders etc. Rei's minimap is pure all round win
If you use mods, then use REI's Minimap.
I play Tekkit so I just set a waypoint at my house. Really helpful.
But if you're stuck with vanilla, the only way I can think of doing it is making a huge landmark like a stone tower beside your house and using a map so you can find it...ah, never mind.
Just install REI's Minimap, I really like it, very helpful, even works with caves.

Me... I use the sun + clouds.
Sun rises in the east.
Clouds move west.

In caves? Is there some trick to the cave-vision I don't know about? Because it seems totally useless to me apart from telling you if there's something inside of that mountain or not.
My answer? Torches! Stick torches on the right wall and never the left and you can always follow them back out! Sometimes you'll need extra light and that won't work though, but don't give up yet, just put the extras on the floor and then you'll know not to follow them!

"Sometimes, I just wanna give up, say 'I'm done with this mess' and go to bed. But you know what; you can't shrug off your responsibilities. You got to pull yourself up and meet the challenges head on. That's the only way you're gonna get ahead in life."
If i'm playing without mods I use torches, landmarks, and coordinates. In caves I just keep a trail of torches and will place cobblestone so i know I've been somewhere.
In caves place markers like sandstone blocks or place torches in a certain pattern. On the surface towers with torches facing the direction home also help.
If the home is near the spawn point use a compass or press F3 and head toward 0,0. If your home is far from your spawn point then press F3 then write down and save your coordinates before you go exploring.
Usually, I will just not go far from my home. But if i decide to one day, I usually just travel straight in one direction. Of course, as soon as I spawn, I'll usually TP to (0,0), but...

Underground, I do "torches on the right." I always place torches on the right wall when I'm exploring a cave or mineshaft. (It works if you do it on the other side instead, too, just pick one and be consistent.) If I need to light some place that can't be reached from the far wall, I'll place it on the floor somewhere instead of on the wall. Then when I want to find my way out I just follow the route that has the torches on my left.
Above ground, I just built my home near spawn so I can find my way back with a compass if I get really lost. Plus there's always good old F3 coordinates.
If you have a nether portal at your home base and are not too far out (about 1000 blocks in each direction, maximum) you can try and warp back home by building a nether portal at your location. Chances are, when you go through you'll just pop out at your existing portal in the nether, then you can jump back in and pop out at your base. If you have portals in other locations too, there's a chance you might end up at one of those when you enter the nether instead, but hopefully you'll know how to find your way back from there.

That must be one small cave.
I just torch up caves and follow the trail of torches. When I get to a steep drop, I turn around and go home. I don't need to explore every inch, because I'm already swimming in riches.
As for mineshafts, that's where I get obsessive. I'll place cobblestone with a torch pointing the way home, and then grind out every scrap of wood and treasure. I insist on finding every chest and spawner!
I put torches on the left for the whole "red, right, returning" nautical thing while caving. Extra torches for light go on the floor. This system works so well for me whilst caving, in the overworld I use rei's minimap. Pure awesome sauce.

Huh, that's a cool way to look at it! I always put them on the right going in because if you start off with the torches on your right and then undo the trip with the torches on your left that's kinda like clockwise/counterclockwise!
