its a legit item. it spawns in the real world
(unlike pig spawner :tongue.gif:)
It could be a mob egg :biggrin.gif:
sure you can find a zombie spawner, but can you pick it up? And the eggs is good thinking, actually. Nobody said it was survival. (I think, stupid phone...)
A couple of you are very close. As well as the item, you need to know the correct reason for why this item would give an infinite food source, and no one has said this yet.Lol, and it's not a zombie spawner, sorry, that wasn't what I was going for--he could just find one without any items anyway.

Well who has been the closest? Btw mob eggs would produce the mob of your choice with whcih to slaughter and eat.
First thing we already know that he could spawn anywhere, it is not said that he's not gonna spawn next to the npc village, ravine, mushroom biome or even a stronghold. We also know that the food he gains is not craftable, as he does not need to craft anything. Point out the obvious, this is most important. The item is not an equipment item, because they break which means they will not give you food continuously.
EDIT: I will give a Watermelon a go!
Mario spawns next to the npc village. He takes the crops, plants and destroys watermelon, gets the pieces, changes one/few/all pieces into seeds and plants them. Melons do not require farmland to grow, and after destroying the crops the farmland stays the same. He destroys the wood around it and replaces it with dirt so the melons can grow.
Changing melon into seeds require crafting. Also, melons do require farmland for growth. Although the usage of village farmland is possible, Mario can't count on being so lucky.
It's an oak sapling. With it, he can plant it, and it will grow into a tree. The trees can drop saplings for new trees, and apples (food!) can also drop from the leaves. More trees, more saplings. Infinite saplings and apples. Mario can increase his food supply infinitely with a single oak sapling.

I would argue that this is a finite and unreliable source of food. Also, the sword would break...
so it isn't a tool.
Lol I tried... Hm... I KNOW! He spawned in a swamp biome and cheated bonemeal to get giant mushrooms for mushroom soup which... needs a bowl... hmph. Nevermind then. All my good ideas fail.
Milk is a food. He could find some cows near spawn, it's not that rare. You did not say it restores food bar, just that it is a food. He spawns himself a bucket, and as u said he uses wood to keep cows in place and milk them.
He would die by the time he got an apple (Author already said this)
Probably would yake a while to find mushroom biome, and you'd die by then.
Well I'm just an old fart here...like 500 years in internet time.
LEGIT minecraft item, that means he can get it legit and is just lazy.
EDIT: WAIT A MINUTE! With silk touch he could technically get a zombie spawner teh legit way!
MY ANSWER STANDS ZOMBIE SPAWNER XD

Oh how I wish, but that was patched.

But you can only get them in creative, why bother farming food in creative?
@Vancouver: Is it bigger than a breadbox? :biggrin.gif:
Somebody has written the answer but hasn't explained the right reason yet.

Is it a sword? He could kill zombies for flesh, pigs for porkchops, cows for beef, etc.
...Or mayeb you couldn't justify it with a response. That works too. :tongue.gif:
Nope, author said the apple is too rare a drop.
Yeah, I just saw that. Hm...
I want to say a sword because he can just kill animals and some monsters (zombies, spiders) to get food, but it eventually breaks...

Hmmm...
