In the past few weeks I've seen a multitude of 'how i mine for village?' threads, showing that despite being almost a year old, villages and villagers are still a bit of a mystery to the majority of the Minecraft player base, which until recently, included myself. Upon finding a seed buried away in the Seed forum, I decided that it was a perfect opportunity to learn how to build a bustling, living city from almost nothing.
In this challenge, you are to take a very, very small NPC village and expand it into a city, all while trying to keep your villagers safe from zombies during the night. You may attempt this on Survival mode, or Creative.
TO MY KNOWLEDGE, THE FOLLOWING SEED ONLY WORKS IN MINECRAFT 1.2.5.
SEED: gimmeadesert
Using this seed, you will spawn very close to a NPC village. You will either be facing it or it will be directly behind you. The following images are how the village will appear upon spawning in the world.
__________ WIN CONDITIONS
1. At least sixteen villagers.
2. At least one Iron golem.
3. Individual living districts, market districts, farming districts and industrial districts. You can't pile them on top of one another.
4. Planned and organized roads.
5. Some city beautification (flowers, hedges, stylized building designs, music, automation).
6. A governor's mansion.
_____________ RULES AND LIMITATIONS:
1. You must stay as close to Vanilla Minecraft (Survival or Creative) as possible. Either do not use mods, or restrict yourself to as few mods features as possible. This includes Single player Commands for turning off rain, resetting the day or changing the biome. Essentially, if you can't access if from Creative mode, then you can't use it.
2. You have to build and expand the village from it's original location. You cannot move to a new location and start a village there.
3. You cannot use Creative eggs to spawn new villagers. You have to let them breed naturally, otherwise that defeats the learning purpose of this challenge.
4. You cannot craft a Iron golem yourself. The golem must spawn naturally.
5. No mob grinders or dark room traps.
Other than that, you are free to construct the village how you want. I also encourage you to take a right out of the village and generate the amazing Alpha-esque terrain, which includes a large biome of floating mountains and other epic terrain that could lend itself for some very epic cities if you expand the village enough. For easy resources if you're playing survival, there is a double ravine immediately to the left of the village.
______________ TIPS:
Villagers require a 3x3 area to properly use house.
Doors need to be open to sunlight, or have a transparent block above them. Transparent blocks are stairs, glass, fences and half-slabs.
Iron Golems need around five-six blocks of vertical space to navigate tunnels.
Zombies will knock down doors and kill your villagers if given the chance.
To take and upload screenshots:
1. F2 is the key to take screenshots. F1 will collapse your toolbar for cleaner images. Press F1 again to retrieve the toolbar.
2. Find the Minecraft folder. Easiest way is to open the texture pack folder while running Minecraft. Click back in the folder option and you will be taken to the main Minecraft folder that contains all the game data. Find the screenshot folder and click on it.
3. Copy and paste the screenshot to your 'My Pictures' folder.
4. Find a image hosting site like Imageshack, Imgur, or Photobucket and upload the screenshots there.
5. Copy and paste the uploaded image's HTML code to the forum reply box, or use the embed tool found on the image hosting site, or in the forum's expanded reply box.
And while I haven't met all the win conditions, here is my village so far:
GOOD LUCK, AND HAVE FUN! Also make sure to post screenshots, especially when you achieve all the win conditions!
See the Tips portion of this challenge for how to upload screenshots to the forum.
If you had read the whole post, you'd know that this challenge is for both Survival and Creative, it's not limited to one mode. I am obviously playing in Creative mode, but I want people to approach this challenge how they want and if they want to use Creative, that's fine, it's more about the learning process of how to build a living city than spending copious amount of time mining.
Again, this challenge is open to both Survival AND Creative modes.
And this is just a friendly bump to push it back to the top of the forum. Also removed some of the tips, as I figured that was making the challenge a bit too easy.
Hopefully it does! I don't download the snapshots because I like to figure out how stuff works as I go along, but here's hoping that the terrain generation didn't mess up the seed, as it really does have some great land to build stuff on and of course, the village itself.
I thought bumping threads is against the rules...?

Over 90 % of the human population is stupid (in my honest opinion). Don't expect too much from them when you post something that actually involves thought.
Interesting. I know of a different seed that has a village around the same size, so I might use that instead because I've been wanting to do something with that village. Nice challenge!
Just wanting to know if anyone has met all the win conditions, and that even if you're not interested in the Challenge itself I highly encourage you to generate some of those amazing mountains to the right of the village in the overhead images in the OP. I'm pretty sure that since there are new ores and such being implemented in the terrain generation code, this seed will not be viable post 1.3.
Unless someone who has generated this seed in 1.3 can confirm that it does.
Just reminding everyone about this challenge. Been fairly busy this week and going to be next week, so I haven't made much progress on the challenge myself. Has anyone met all the win conditions yet?
I thought bumping threads is against the rules...?
True.
I'm too busy with my server right now to try this challenge, but I did have a tip that might help. Create a micro villager generator to get a few golems going, then expand the village as you wish. As you expand you can tear down your generator so they'll claim their own houses. And to head off any "RULES SAY NO!!!" posts, it's not against the rules. The rules state that the finished product has to have individual districts. It doesn't say you can't start out compact.

If you think the title and OP tells you everything you want to know about a thread, don't reply. If you want to actually read the thread and post an intelligent reply, you're welcome to it.
Yes, once you reach around sixteen villagers, a golem will spawn. Pretty sure it's in increments of ten to fifteen afterwards to get more to spawn. My village currently has two and the last time I counted I had about twenty-five-ish villagers.

Yeah, I'm not banning the use of villager generators (mostly because of having the challenge open to people who want to play on Creative mode and the unlimited block acces and easy terrain clearing), but I do feel that they go against the spirit of the challenge since you're not allowing the villages to grow naturally along with the village itself by abusing the exploit.
