I've read a few bits on the relation between villagers and the number of doors/houses, and I'm trying to get enough villagers to spawn an Iron Golem. I've heard various numbers for the number of doors you need for a number of villagers, but none of them appear to be happening here.
I've got about 35 doors, all attached to houses. I've only got 15 villagers and no golem. So, some questions:
1. What rate do villagers reproduce at? I've had a few born, but nothing is happening right now. Does it happen gradually?
2. Is it all right for houses to share walls? I have several apartment rows like so:

You need around 3 doors per villager for them to breed. Also even when you have enough for a golem to spawn it can take a while for it to actually spawn.

The wiki says "Once housing has been established, Villagers will then mate until the number of adult Villagers equals 1.35 times the number of doors." So it's 3 doors per villager, not a closer proportion?

One test Iv done with villagers was to create one large open space with a crap tone of doors along the walls. and it worked the started having babies all over that open room.
from what I can tell the ONLY requirement for a door to be a house is that one side of the door has more ceiling than the other side of the door. walls are optional.

It's 0.35, not 1.35.
Villagers will breed, provided there are at least two to begin with, until the number of adult villagers reaches 0.35 times the number of "houses." After that, any remaining baby villagers will grow to adulthood, but no new babies will be born, bringing the total number of villagers to somewhere above one-third the number of houses.
**There is also a glitch where sometimes the villagers will continue to breed even after the cap is exceeded. I'm not sure exactly what the conditions are for this, but I believe it has something to do with having too high a variance in the vertical elevation between the houses of the village.
A "house" is defined as a wooden door with an "inside" and an "outside." The "inside" is the side which has more "roof" blocks than the other. An opaque (non-transparent) block is counted as part of the roof if it is inline with the door, within five blocks horizontally in the two directions the door faces, its topside is exposed to sunlight during the day, and its bottom side is higher than the door's bottom side. The block can be at any height as long as it's above the door's bottom edge, it doesn't have to be within any set distance vertically. Blocks to the side of the door, or diagonal from it, are never counted as roof blocks. A door is not counted as a "house" without a roof, or with the same number of roof blocks on either side.
Example - top-down view, up is north, is a door:
If the door is facing north-south, then only the blue blocks are checked to see if they count as roof blocks. If it's facing east-west, then the purple blocks are checked instead. The white blocks do not matter, they can be anything. Additionally, blocks directly above the door do not matter, as they are neither on one side of the door nor the other.
A house is initiated by a nearby villager within 16 blocks horizontally and four blocks vertically, and then added either to a new or existing village. A house will be added to an existing village if it is within 32 blocks of the village radius, which extends from the center point to the furthest house, or for 32 blocks, whichever is greater.
Golems will spawn near the center of a village if it has at least 21 houses and at least 16 villagers. As long as it is 21 or greater, the number of houses makes no difference, however more golems can spawn for every 16 villagers (so 0-15 villagers spawns no golems, 16-31 spawns one, 32-47 spawns two, etc.) Also you will initially need at least 48 houses in order to spawn sixteen villagers naturally, although after that you can cut them back down to 21 if you want to, or else you can bring the villagers in through other means, such as carting them in by minecart from another village, or using creative mode spawn eggs. This cap only limits the number of golems in a village at any one time; as soon as one is killed or leaves the village boundaries, a new one can spawn in its place immediately.
The golem spawning zone is a 16x16x4 area centered around the center of the village (which is the geometric center point, or "average position" of all the doors.)
As long as all the conditions are met (16 villagers, 21 houses, golem cap not reached,) then each game tick (1/20 of a second) there is a 1/7000 chance the game will try to spawn a golem. Basically it picks a random number between 0 and 6999, and whenever it picks 0, up to ten attempts are made to spawn a golem. A random spot is chosen inside the golem spawning zone, and if that spot contains a solid block with at least 2x2x3 space above it (including liquids and transparent blocks such as glass) then a golem is spawned there.
This is repeated up to ten times or until a golem is spawned, whichever comes first. Then, the whole process is repeated every game tick until the golem cap is reached. This results in a golem spawning roughly every 6-12 minutes, or about 5-10 golems per hour, in an efficient iron farm that has sufficient floorspace in the spawning zone and either kills the golems immediately or else flushes them outside of the village boundaries so that new ones may spawn in their place. A drop of seven blocks below the spawning zone is enough to "disconnect" a golem from the village so that a new one can spawn there.

I've found the best way to figure out how many Testificates you should get is by dividing the number of doors (D) by 100, then multiplying it by 35, and then round down to find the average number of Testificates (T)
Pretty much the equation is this:
D/100x35=T
It's worked so far for my Village, but about three doors per Villager uses much less math for approximately the same result.

Congratulations, you can do elementary school level math. Good for you, I guess? Yes, that's what is meant by "0.35 times the number of houses." You could also say "35%" or "thirty-five percent" or "thirty-five one-hundredths" or "oh point three-five." Or even as you said, divided by 100 and then multiplied by 35. They're all the same thing. However I thought "0.35 times..." would be the easist to understand. Apparently not for everyone...or did you simply not read any of the other posts before responding?

It doesn't. It doesn't affect the probability at all. The probability of golem spawning is always 1/7000 per game tick. Except, you know, when it's not. Like when it's zero instead, because there aren't enough houses or villagers, or because there're already as many golems as are allowed for the current number of villagers. Come to think of it, the number of villagers has a direct relation to golem spawning. So just like you said, except almost exactly the opposite.
