This guide is for turning a crappy PC with a crappy graphics card into a machine capable of playing Minecraft at acceptable levels. IE; Tiny, Smooth Lighting, Fancy Grass & Fancy Trees, and Bobbing at 40-65 FPS outside(25-30 while loading chunks), and 65-100 FPS while mining or inside.
1. GET OPTIFINE
2. USE IT WELL:
LIEK DIS
Graphics FAST
Render Distance Tiny
Performance Max FPS
Bobbing ON
Advanced OpenGL FAST (IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT WILL ONLY RENDER WHAT U SEE)
Clunds OFF
FOG Start 0.2
MipMap Type Nearest
Smooth Lighting Optional
Fog OFF
Mipmap level 0
Animations:
Particles MINIMAL
EVERYTHING ELSE OFF
Details:
Trees FANCY (OPTIONAL)
Water Fast
Sky OFF
Clear Water OFF
Better Grass OFF
Fullscreen Default
Clound Height OFF
Grass Fast (optional)
Rain & Snow OFF
Stars OFF
Depth Fog OFF
Better Snow OFF
Other:
Smooth FPS ON
Fast Debug Info ON
Load Far OFF
Chunk Updates 1
Weather OFF
Far View OFF
Smooth Input ON
Debug Profiler OFF
Preloaded Chunks OFF (IMPORTANT CAUSES MASSIVE LAG IF USED IMPROPERLY)
Dynamic Updates ON (IMPORTANT ALLOWS USER TO STAND STILL AND LOAD CHUNKS TO GAIN FPS)
Time DAY ONLY
Autosave 30MIN (IMPORTANT FIXES LSOD)
EAT THIS DATA GAIN ITS POWERS
3. GET GAMEBOOSTER & ADVANCED SYSTEMCARE 5
use the tools and turn off all programs if GB and ADV SYSTEM CARE doesn't
4. Allocate MOAR RAM to Minecraft
(javaw -Xmx4096m -Xms2048m -jar "C:\Users\KAME0\Desktop\Minecraft.exe") or something similar
THIS ^ (Xmx) should be double Xms
5. RAMDISK (YOUR BEST FRIEND)
a. create a new ramdisk. allocate 100-250 mb for the ramdisk
b. Format it with Windows Disk Manager (Create and format windows disk partitions)
c. cut and paste the folders inside your .minecraft folder to the Ramdisk. (BACKUP NOW)
d. create a shortcut to the files ( type this into CMD mklink /j %appdata%\.minecraft K:\) "K:\ will be replaced with the disk letter assigned to the ramdisk.
e.Run Minecraft
f. tell RAMDISK TO AUTOSAVE (IMPORTANT)
After many HOURS of work trying to make my lappy work proper, this is the end result. My Lappy now runs at the settings described in the opening paragraph...
Been on vacation away from my Desktop >.<
I WAS SOO IRRITATED
Eehm... Seriously? If you need to do this, it seems like you have a single core processor and around half a gig of RAM. You really need a new PC if it only runs like this...

you know, the point of optifine is so thay you can enjoy actually being able to use a few fancy settings. for example, the fancy clouds of my texture pack are amazing, and you cant do without fancy grass (makes the side match the biome color).
POINT IS, find what makes the best fps for the best look.

Yes, with a HUGE "BE CAREFULL"
This uses your ram as a fast write disk (Like a solid state) However with older computers this does have a risk of going wrong. With the above setting java to use specified ram, make sure to subtract any ram being used by this program if using it.
Your going to make everything look ugly so on every normal computer you'll get 200 fps...?

Thanks guys, This guide is for those who don't have the money to go spend on a new dektop and or lappy. FOR ME, this was a opportunity to help those who wish to play on a laptop computer. Most laptop computers have what is known as "intergrated graphics" which is probably the slowest piece of crap that the company could put in them. Knowing that most laptops have intergrated graphics this guide will optimize your laptop for only minecraft while the programs are in use.
I did however forget to explain that using programs like RAMDISK can be dangerous THANK YOU EduLeme, Blek, Mattlock (Thanks for the Heads up on RAMDISK) :biggrin.gif:, Dabomb, and gunman103.
I hope to release a video on this process soon. My main perogative will be working on a model of the senate rotunda and the jedi temple for the MCFORUM contest, but hopefully i can finalize this guide and even make new PC and Lappy recommendations for Minecraft. (Best gaming power for the money)
If you have any questions feel free to contact me using my email. ([email protected])
I had a rather old laptop, 2GB of RAM.
Now i have a 8GB RAM, massive HDD, great graphics card and i dont optimize at max settings.
You dont need a brilliant PC like mine (Trollface)
My mum has a £200 laptop and can run normal and fast fine.
Another tweak that i have recently tested is increasing the priority of minecraft through the task manager. this usually decreases lag spikes and improves FPS slightly, ~3-8 FPS
Does your computer seriously need that much tweaking to run well? You may need to scrap some of the tweaks, 20 fps is really all you need. Over that you don't notice much.
Absolutely. I need at least 100 fps to make myself happy with the performance. And your wrong you can still see major differences in fps up to 250. Most laptops without a dedicated GPU need this to run the game.

avg FPS is not so much the problem as near as I can tell as spikes. He's right, 20fps is annoying but not bad. Spikes aren't that terrible either when you're offline. But online, if its spiking, you might as well play creative especially w/ mc's 'combat' system.
To all the guys saying 'you need to buy a new computer,' some people don't like wasting money, or don't have money to waste in the first place. There is no reason to get a top of the line computer to run minecraft, or even a decent one, because as people have pointed out it also runs crappy on those a lot of the time if its not optimized, and optimized it doesn't require them - and I'm not talking about turning off all the 'good' graphics (its nice to see graphics addicts on the forum of a game whose number one design philosophy seems to be gameplay over graphics, graphics can go bugger themselves with a knotty branch) but simple things like downloading optifine (using all ur cores instead of one for the win, did notch ever fix this in default mc?), giving mc a bit more memory and so on. It isn't exactly stable out of the box, and unless your idea of browsing the forums is closing your eyes and bashing your head into the keyboard and seeing what page you turn up on you've seen a thousand threads about people with nice rigs getting crappy performance.
Also there's the fact that the thing doesn't render terrain much past reaching distance (sarcasm ofc, but not as much as it should be) on even the highest settings, you have to get mods for that that improve it a BIT at the cost of massive graphics hits, and even on default you are smacked in the face features popping in and out of the world all the time. So yeah, even for the case of graphics the methodology some here are suggesting (buy lewt computer, turn all settings to MAXXXXXXX) will give you something that looks like it got flushed down a toilet in Tron. I'll take being able to see past a couple hundred meters over having a butt ugly tree look a bit less fugly all day long, thanks :smile.gif:
Good guide, tho ofc most of it is common sense or stuff posted everywhere. I run on a laptop as well, and honestly most optimization doesn't do much; it runs at an okay fps (or relatively steady on vsync) without any optimization, it runs pretty smooth with, but no matter WHAT I do nothing really even begins to address the spiking, especially in multiplayer but in sp as well ofc. The terrain is rendered and textured inefficiently, and no optimization mod does more than scratch the surface of that problem. Also the combat in pvp is horribly suited to any sort of spiking at all, melee (as opposed to fps) combat already is less suited to lag than fps due to the fact that it needs some real or at least well simulated physics involved to come off (MC doesn't ofc but even as it is) and on top of that player move speeds, attack speeds, etc, are all ridiculously above human norms exacerbating the problem further, and ofc block place/remove/inventory mechanics are just making it worse. I know a lot of people in mc don't care about combat but if its ever gonna be decent for a persistent pvp server even on a nice rig its gonna have to do a lot of things better. What it DOES do is pretty damn neat tho

Great guide, will be pretty helpful, maybe with this I'll be able to play on my netbook. Its graphics in general are pretty awful.
Do everything else?

No,NO,NO!
