So Endermen themselfs are pretty sweet, I like them as a new mob...they fit the Minecraft universe pretty well. BUT I hate how they steal blocks... It would be cool if it was something they used to actually get at you or whatever it'd be sweet..
But as is they just wander around stealing a block from here...placing it there...and whatnot.
What stemmed this little rant is, I finally got internet, updated from 1.3 to 1.8.1 and built a huge castle.. which I love... but it seems like every day or so I have to do a walk around to replace one little block that has been taken out..
And sometimes its block that are freakin hard to get to (my castle is on a cliff)
Anyways I wish that this wasn't a feature, or Notch set it up so they would only remove blocks to get at a player...or have it so you can turn them off (yeah I know, peaceful) but I enjoy playing with mobs...its just this one little thing.
When playing singleplayer I've never really had trouble with them, but on 24/7 servers they can wreak havoc for hours upon hours uninterrupted. I agree that the block-moving should be removed unless they're provoked.
And this isn't just a few floating trees and missing wall blocks I'm talking about, it's huge damage. They've completely ruined minecart tracks, busted holes in countless walls, and rearranged blocks like smooth stone and glass which can't just be picked up and replaced.
I understand that some people are going to just say "whatever, put the blocks back" and that's what we've been doing because, lets face it, what other choice do we have? But I've spent multiple hours just taking care of Endermen, be it through ender-proofing or damage repair.
I am sure that since most people have nerfed creepers on your servers that someone will come out with a way to nerf the endermen also but for the pure vanilla game LEAVE THEM ALONE!!
Good lord I know most of ya like to have your lil happy worlds but endermen are supposed to be annoying and make it harder. I hope the fix Notch is talking about lets em move more blocks, and concentrate on the player placed blocks so that you actually have to defend your builds from them. Now that what it Should be like , instead of creepers don't damage builds and endermen place flowers,,,, damn hippies.

I think Notch is nerfing their block moving, by removing some blocks that they can carry around (like wooden planks, yay). Read his twitter and the MC Wiki.

Its funny you should mention the server thing. thats exactly where my problems are, I played single player 1.8 for about a week before starting a server with some friends. And thats exactly where my castle is and the damage.
And thankfully for me it hasn't been serous damage... But it sure makes my castle look lame when there is a missing block here....and there.... over there, whoops theres one...

No one mentioned nerfing creepers. And I don't find replacing Enderblocks "hard". It's really easy, you just right click, done. It doesn't add difficulty, just annoyance. Notch admitted this in his most recent tweet, and is going to reconfigure them so that they are more difficulty oriented, and less pestilent.
And protecting buildings is easy, but on huge multiplayer servers, you can't just fence or moat an entire city since it's always expanding, not to mention that's hours upon hours of game time spent grinding by digging and moving water just to prevent a single mob from messing up structures.
Endermen should be able to dig right through any and every block to get to a player when provoked, but not when passive. Notch's intention was that Endermen should be a mob feared for the sole reason that any threat it poses is completely the player's fault, but that's been skewed by the block moving.
I love the concept, just not the execution. And I'm not trying to change your mind, you can love them all you want (I used to love the way they move blocks too) but there's no reason to mistreat people just because of the way they play the game.

No one is mistreating anyone, maybe your sensitive but calling flower placing endermen hippies couldn't be very insulting to anyone, other than hippies,or endermen, but i Hate hippies ,, the way they crawl up your leg and bite you on the ass......... either way ,, Ideally endermen would ONLY move player placed blocks, and in caves , work to block the player in. Then the modders could nerf them for the people who want a more peaceful type world. But gosh why nerf them for everyone when a VERY few people ( granted loud people) do not like the mechanics of them. Doesn't anyone remember how it was before creepers were nerfed by modders? We lerned to deal with it ,,, and creeper hunting and killing them before they blow up is a great sport! Endermen are new , it will take time but were humans we will adapt and future maps will be enderman proof by using motes , waterfalls and the like.

Simple. Notch needs to add Enderman Repellant blocks. This way, they won't harm your homes :biggrin.gif:.

Over 90 % of the human population is stupid (in my honest opinion). Don't expect too much from them when you post something that actually involves thought.

A thousand times, this.
If I'm standing on my balcony or in my house and mouse over an Enderman, I deserve the multiple blocks it removes from my wall in its efforts to get at me. But passive erosion of the landscape and random blocks taken from obscure corners of my builds does not make the game more fun or make the Endermen a frightening and dangerous mob - it builds in a tedious manual upkeep necessity and renders the Endermen nothing more than griefers.
This is not at all like Creeper craters. Creeper explosions are 100% player-provoked. On my single player worlds, I literally cannot recall the last time a Creeper exploded. Ender-griefing is random, and on 24/7 servers can erode builds and landscapes in a surprisingly short timeframe. Besides, the biggest reason for nerfing Creeper-booms on servers is their potential for griefing by players. All a griefer needs to do is lure creepers to someone's build and let them boom. Free grief TNT without having to harvest materials.

Maybe I'm just reading your posts wrong, and if so, I apologize, but you do seem to be stating things with a fairly hostile tone; saying that your opinion is how things should be, and speaking in a condescending tone to those who disagree.
On a semi-related note, is anyone else surprised that someone with such sub-par language skills and confrontational tendencies is a moderator? I'm not trying to attack you personally, it just blew me away when, after deciphering your text, I looked over to see that you were a member of status.
