Hello I have tryed to understand the lighting system (torches give off 14 light and mobs need 7 or under to spawn)
but when more than one torch is in the equation it greatly confuses me. so i know that mushrooms will not spread 1 block from a torch (so i suspose at 13 light)
The question i am asking with a large flat land for a mushroom farm what should be the Spacing between each Torch to produce the most amount of mushrooms while still allowing 0% of mobs to be able to spawn
currently i use a system that staggers i start in a corner with a torch then move 8 blocks East and place another torch then i move 4 blocks back West and then 9 blocks South or North
i keep repeating that pattern and it does okay but is there a more simpler system that works better? i have tried torches seperated by 7 blocks (makine a square where the torches are the corners of the square)but it didnt seem to work as well as my system i am using now
i just wanted to see everyones input and perhaps we can figure out the most efficient way to grow shrooms for our soup addiction <3 :wink.gif:
I think thats is the best way actually for my soup addiction. What I do is just make a little room not that bright of light but I usually do not use my mushroom soup I just keep it as a trophy.

"I just use a TON of redstone torches. It usually stops mobs, but still allows mushrooms to grow."
yes but for each redstone torch that is a place that takes up a mushroom even if i place them on a wall not very far inside the farm mobs will spawn,

"Just make your mushroom farm 1 block tall and harvest with water."
that is a very good idea! however the server i am makeing this mushroom farm has MCMMO which gives herblore experience for the mushrooms i harvest. therefore water wont work.

ah well u need a golden bowl then eh?
xD my server is heavy on pvp so i need a ton of soup to defend my clan
Thats the design for the torches, Checker board works fine too.
I have no idea who told you mushrooms wont grow in light but, they were wrong. Dead wrong. I have had them grow under direct torch light.
in my experients from atlest 1.6.6 the torch wont allow mushrooms to spawn in the areas one block north, south, east and west from the torch (a + sign (where as the point it crosses is the torch)
also are u saying that ever other block you place a torch? or what does the cobblestone represent in your picture? only the corners of the cobblestone would allow spreading of mushrooms

The cobblestone represents, itself. That is the torch layout of the ceiling. See the link i put..
use the shelf idea but use slabs for your walkways.
allows you to harvest safely without using any torches.
either that or just go into the Nether and just hollow out a large cave there.
i assume u stand on the slab and break the musrooms that spawns on the now thats only one mushroom that can spread unless u like only placed one mushroom every 5 or so blocks, then couldnt spiders spawn in that crevice?

And, they will grow on anything mobs can spawn on.

Edit:
(top veiw) would be to difficult for me to screenshot and upload (due to terribel internet)
