I walked past one of my buildings to find a corner of it blown up. It must have been a creeper, but how would the creeper detonate without me there to detonate it. Whatsmore, it was on peaceful.
I don't think it is a Creeper. The break lines are far too even.

There is lava nearby (as you can see in the pic), so that could have been the cause of the creeper detonation, if it was not on peaceful. Which it was.
There may have been a lightning storm at the time (it was at least raining), so lightning could have been the cause. However, why didn't it, one, burn down the whole structure, and two, destroy several sandstone blocks?
If lava is too close to your house, it can catch the ground on fire, thus, the wood on fire, and since fire is nerfed, it may have just burnt a small hole.

That is plausible, however the lava stopped before that corner. There was wood that was only two or three blocks away from the lava, but as you can see in the pic, that wood is fine. And there is the factor that several sandstone blocks were also destroyed, which sorta rules out that idea.
I would totally create and link to a picture of Arnold Schwarzenegger with shades and leather jacket on with the words "Creepers self terminated."... but I'm too lazy at this time of night.

Fire can generate from lava, about up to two blocks away, fire can catch fire to flammable blocks up to two blocks away, this INCLUDES diagonally, and you stated it was 2-4 blocks away from the house, so it's technically (Albeit low chance) possible for the house to catch fire, you're lucky.

It is a very puzzling mystery.

Too accurate for sand people.
Pfft... with that theory it can be maybe anyone then.
Maybe the spirit of Gary Coleman?

Makes sense... However if you look at this image I took of the mystery destruction you'll see that at least six blocks of sandstone are missing: http://s1143.photobucket.com/albums/n632/TropicalMonsoon/Minecraft/?action=view¤t=777.png
Well only two logical ways, creeper or the block data for that area corrupted, resetting it to "air"
Or that was not sandstone and actual sand >_>
If it were that, he would've suggested Herobrine as a culprit already.
The latter is likely, although it's definitely not chunk size.
