This whole thing is great. The only disadvantage is, that this will be most likely fixed in the next version since it's obviously some kind of abuse. However, I am planning to use this to the fullest. :biggrin.gif:
I'm absolutely positive Notch didn't think this is how his addition would end, but this farm design doesn't abuse a single glitch... That is, unless growing Flowers in conditions where they technically cannot exist is considered a glitch.
I've already used this a lot, and I have no idea what to do with my stock of seeds...
of simply spamming in a dark room seemed to work just fine without any redstone. Are blocks automatically updated in SMP but not in SSP or something? If it only works in SMP I'll have to update my video description.

Using Redstone allows you to only use one spot, instead of sweeping back and forth. This is probably a good thing.
The way I see it, Redstone just makes it easier, and there's really no reason not to have it.
The "blocks updating with redstone" quirk has been around long before that huge 1.6 bugfix. Since Notch didn't "fix" this, he probably didn't think it was a glitch?

Well, that's how it works. The flower doesn't pop out of the ground until a nearby block is updated. This being the redstone, which is updated when it is changed from powered to unpowered, and vise-versa.
However, if anything, I think Notch will take the "Flowers growing in the dark" thing as a glitch. Without it, this whole design doesn't work. I'm sure by then we will have Pistons, and everything will be fine. :biggrin.gif:
Aperture Science. We do what we must because we can.
Jolly good. I always wanted a use for all of the bonemeal and redstone I have sitting around, and I can use the flowers for decoration. Perrrfect.
Thanks. The original design used near 1,000 redstone, and had a lot more lag. (Repeaters use a lot of the stuff!) This was before I fully understood the redstone-updating quirk.
I'm going to try to make more designs that use Redstone in a PRACTICAL way, as many people think redstone is pointless. Well, about two stacks of your redstone down!
As for the flowers... I have no idea what to do with them. I need to put my Mob system in overdrive to get enough wool to use them on.
Meh, if he fixes flowers being able to spawn in the dark, just add some redstone torches here and there. You wont be able to grow things when they're off, but when its on you can, however since it's a 1-clock the torches will quickly turn off, making everything dark, which kills the plants. Certainly, this fix would make any of these methods slower, but this one not much.

This seems like it would work as well. Also, if placed correctly, the redstone torches would automatically update the flowers/tall grass.
You shall need to get a tutorial on how you configured your 1-clock up stat!
It's so delicious and moist, wait, wrong part.
EDIT: Okay, so I reproduced this farm with a 5-clock and no rapid 1-clock and figured out that the lag was not the clock, ticking too fast, but the amount of drops it produces. There is a very small difference between a 1-clock and a 5-clock in terms of drop rate but the 5 would be better as it can easily be controlled with a lever.
Brilliant design and now my hand has been forced to burn away all these excess seeds and make new sections in my storage room to hold all the flowers and roses.
Good job!
I'll make an easy tutorial on the 1-Clock soon.
With a 9x9 farm, there are a little more than 81 redstone blocks updated every short while. The lag is mostly caused by drops, but is also caused a bit by the redstone.
I'm keeping 3 double-chests of seeds, but after that, they serve no purpose...
Truly epic design, I am going to have to place this in my village. It's a ghost town, but that doesn't matter. This also means that projects that need large amounts of flower dye can easily be funded.
"The point is, if we can put cows in farms, why can't we put flowers in them?"
Thanks! I find that my world is pretty empty, as I am not one to build something that doesn't serve a purpose.
As for the cow thing... Well, I don't think that cows can spawn on flowers :biggrin.gif:
i found a slight way to optimize this by using less redstone, and making the blocks update slightly faster. i used a 1-clock instead of a 5-clock, and i only wired it up to one block. as long as you only place the bonemeal on the block that is updating constantly, you won't run into any hangups. this only takes about 10-15 redstone, depending on how you make the 1-clock.

Hmm... I can't believe I haven't thought of that. This seems like a pretty good idea, as the most, if not all of the hangups without redstone are caused by a tall grass covering the location for Bonemeal. This wouldn't be an issue.
However, with a larger radius farm, the updates to the outer flowers would be less common without use of Redstone... Not sure if it matters in the long run though.

I don't see how this is really faster though...
it's only very slightly faster. with a 5-clock, they will update about twice a second, but with a 1-clock, they will update something like 5-10 times a second (i'm not sure how long a tick is, but they update every tick)
EDIT: also, i'm making a tutorial video as we speak on a few ways to build a 1-clock
This thread bores me.

Elaborate tends to be "how I roll" :biggrin.gif:
I was originally planning on building one of the water conveyors, but I learned that water kills grass. So that was out.
However, seeing as Notch will likely fix this "exploit", water conveyors may be the best way to go... The only way to go, really.

using this to get seeds though, not flowers

I'm quite the shady customer.
I'm making a note here, HUGE SUCCESS!
