So, I built a witch farm. It took about a week to prepare the surface and flood it, another week-and-a-half to finishing lighting up every tiny cave in the bounds of the perimeter, and another few days to build the actual trap, item collection system, sorting system, and stick-powered auto-furnace.
After all that, it works great! ... but ONLY when I'm the only one on the server. When I'm alone, I'm seeing about 50 witches per minute, just as a rough estimate. As soon as a second player joins, the spawn rate drops to about FOUR per minute.
Furthermore, that happens even if the second person is standing in the dead zone at the center of the witch perimeter.
I don't get it. Why does the spawn rate tank so hard as soon as a second player gets online? Is this common on multiplayer servers? Is there anything I can do to fix it, or is it just a fact of life?

Someone else must have a farm in the vicinity because only a certain amount of mobs are allowed per chunk
In multiplayer, the mob spawning is divide up among players. So that means less villagers will spawn when there is somebody else on.
I would have to agree with this. Too bad for your farm, though. maybe get that mod..that copies the world maps, and use it on singleplayer or something when you want to look at them or. I have no Idea, really.
I've done more research, and I think KingzofDawn and Toph_Rocks are right. At my witch farm, there are very few dark spots (valid spawn locations) outside of the witch spawning floors. So when I'm on alone, it works great. But as soon as a second player joins, someplace outside the witch farm, there are TON of better spawn spots in the caves underneath them, which rapidly soak up the whole mob cap, leaving the witch farm largely useless.
My particular server is pretty lightly populated, so I can still get pretty good use out of my witch farm by idling there overnight when nobody else is on.
Still, this experience raises the question: why on earth does anyone bother building one of these things in multiplayer if they're instantly rendered useless by the addition of a second player? Putting together a spawn-unfriendly perimeter and building a trap around a witch hut requires a massive investment of time, effort, and resources. It hardly seems worth it if the result's only useful when you take the "multi" out of "multiplayer".

People see me and think I'm weak. But I can take care of myself, by myself.

wow, I never really thought about your problem that way. I suppose you're right, though.
