Yeah, I know it has been discussed in a few threads here, but there seems to be general disagreement on whether it IS or IS NOT possible to get horses to spawn on old chunks.
I have a HUGE plains biome on my server. I've yet to see one horse. As others have suggested, I have run around the biome and killed anything that walks there, in the hopes that a horse will then spawn. So far, nothing.
So, does anyone know FOR SURE if you can spawn a horse on an old chunk?
On my server, we have now explored so far in every direction that if it is NOT possible, then getting a horse is near impossible, and as much as it would suck to start over, that's what I may end up doing.
Well with the generation code that was added in Beta 1.8, animals were made so that they spawn with the chunk. This mean that they spawn once at the beginning. Though they still can spawn rarely more from time to time. All this mean that if you want Horse, your best chance is to find new plain chunks. But it is still possible that a Horse spawn in your current plain chunks, but it may take a while before you see one do so.
That's what I thought at first, as well. And further, it wasn't about the chunks themselves being different, but I thought that the horses only spawned on initial chunk generation. So it wasn't the fact that they were 1.6 chunks, but the fact that they were being generated right then.
However, then I saw this video:
...which shows -- pretty definitively, if you ask me -- that horses will spawn randomly, even in pre-existing, pre-1.6 chunks. Turns out I was wrong in my initial belief, but this is one of those times when that's alright with me
I don't see why they wouldn't. Unlike something like a village or mineshaft where it only spawns once and it's based of terrain generation, horses spawn randomly and are based of the spawning mob algorithms. Since horses are not biome/area dependent (unlike Blazes/Wither Skeletons) I don't see a reason why they could not spawn.

Eh? Actually, horses are biome-dependent (they only spawn in plains biomes), but I don't know where you're going with that, because blazes and wither skeletons also do spawn in older worlds' fortresses.

When I meant by biome/location dependent, I'm meaning not in a special type of area, like Blazes inside a Fortress (that only spawned after they were added). Sorry, should have probably been a bit more clear.

So, can anyone help?
thanks in advance guys....
thanks! r u sure? there were plenty of posts of people saying otherwise this week.
I'm inclined to believe you, but with so many people saying so many different things, it hard to know what to think
survivor: that's the way I had thought it would work. I think im spinning my wheels hoping some horses will spawn in my old areas.
think its time to chuck over a year of work and start over.....

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.

Or you could just explore. Nether travel to 150k in any direction
so, there DOES appear to be hope for a horse in an old chunk.
If it IS possible, it must be an extremely low spawn rate.... ive been looking pretty constantly since go-live and not a horse to be found...
