Well I would be grateful that they are not aggressive mobs in the first place. They are passive until attacked. My suggestion to you, don't go to the nether if you don't want to face pigmen.
God only knows who attacked it, and when. And how does staying away from someone else prevent this? They went to the Nether and caused trouble, and I walked into it. Maybe I've never crossed paths with them.
Why? Perhaps it was intentional, maybe it was an oversight, or it could simply be an insurmountable limitation in the way the game is coded. Whatever the reason for it, though, the fact is that it is. I've heard that even getting hit by a ghast will cause them to become aggro at you (this doesn't happen in single-player, though.) There's nothing you can do to change it, so your only options are to avoid the nether, or else be prepared. Full armor and a sword with a good Sharp/Smite and/or Knockback enchantment will go a long way towards the latter.
Remember that any type of damage will set the pigmen off. That means that if a ghast shoots a fireball at you/other players, and it explodes near the pigmen, they will aggro everyone that goes near them until they've cooled down.
I'm sure they calm down after awhile. I remember tunning into angered pigmen that killed me. I returned and they were fine. I guess they stop being agressive once they've had their blood shed.
I don't know why they do that. Perhaps it was an oversight, or they couldn't code them only attacking the one who aggro'd them. Or maybe it was intentional, to provide a greater challenge.
I personally think it was a coding limitation.

That isn't true. I have had ghasts and whither skeletons bombarding me and hitting the pigmen that were all around me and they didn't care. The only trick becomes killing the things that are attacking you without accidentally hitting a pigman.

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.
Miner's nightmare preset
Miner's nightmare preset (original terrain)
Killing the Ender Dragon, no damage (no armor/potions/enchantments/pumpkin)
They don't, but they do despawn, then new ones can spawn in the same area and it will seem like they've just calmed down, but really they haven't.

Check out my new game, Legends of Aekran!
If the game is so stupid and has so many stupid aspects, why are you playing it? It is a game, stupid, it is supposed to be fun and CHALLENGING.

Or make a 4 block pillar under yourself and punch them to death, they can't hit you but you can hit them
My fan fiction of the game: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1957118-programmer-my-first-fan-fiction/#entry24096758
Then why do you play? I don't mind pigmen, I just wait for them to despawn.
Please list said other stupid, annoying aspects of the game. Now.
It is true in multiplayer.
