Hey guys. I find that I always throw away dirt cobblestone and netherak away and then I need them. Dirt for landskaping cobblestone for stone brick and netherak for nether brick and fire so I want to know I this happens to you.
Have you tried creating a seperate room with double chests just for dirt, copplestone and such?
This is something that every minecrafter should get into. It's super handy. Just stick in the cellar of some remote part of your city/house/castle/fort/large anatomically correct body part and deposit and or withdraw as needed.

Watch me mine for crafts, craft mines, fall down shafts and do a bunch of other things that may or may not involve blocks.
If have been in the same situation many times but when either all my chests and inventory were clustered with those materials or i never had them because i just threw them out like you I made separate chests just for them like everyone else said.

Real Minecrafters(tm) never, ever, throw anything away. (j/k)
I never throw out dirt or cobble though, cobble can be made into steps, smelted into stone to build with or make stone bricks/steps with and has a hundred other uses, like bridging gaps and damming/covering lava while mining. Dirt is something that you rarely use but when you do use it you always need a ton of it (or at least it seems that way).
Never Ever Throw Anything Away. I used my first wooden pick to smelt iron. WIN WIN.
Haha, i used to do that but as iv'e played more I actually do the opposite. I now get enough wood for a crafting table, a few sticks and a wooden pick axe, then i dig down, mine some cobblestone and move straight away to all stone tools.
I have no problem throwing out cobble, since it's renewable -- easily renewable, I have a (fast) smooth-stone generator right outside my base -- but I never throw out dirt or netherrack because, abundant as they may be, they aren't renewable. There is just as much as there is, and when it's gone, it's gone. I don't like to throw out anything I can't get back. Iron blocks and ender pearls? Nah, just put 'em in the trash. Flower pots and lily pads, on the other hand? MY PRECIOUS!! (Actually that's somewhat of an exaggeration...I've never had enough iron blocks to throw out, but I wouldn't feel too bad about losing one or two here and there. I have dumped hundreds upon hundreds of ender pearls into the void, though, just because I didn't want them taking up space in my storage room.)

I, like the others never throw away anything of any use. Other than the odd seed or flower or perhaps a mob drop that was taking up space in my inventory that I didn't need I almost always keep everything I get. I have an abundance of double chests storing almost every item in my world in a secure storage room made of obsidian in my fully lit up base. Yes this might be over the top however I sort of like how obsidian looks, don't mind mining it and like the comfort of knowing that even if a hundred creepers miraculously get into my base (highly unlikely) that all of my valuables and even non valuables will be perfectly safe. It is far too easy to grow some trees to get plenty of wood to make more chests then you could ever use so why not do that so you don't have to regret getting rid of something you will probably need in the future? You never know what content will come out or what project you might want to do so believe me it's worth it.

This is an important point. I've definitely said in the past, "Why am I keeping all this redstone dust?" and, "Why am I keeping all this netherrack?" BAM. Along comes redstone blocks and easy netherbrick. Especially on the netherrack -> netherbrick one, I would've kicked myself repeatedly had I been dumb enough to dump it in the ol' trash disposal.
I probably have a half-chest full of oak saplings that could go, but best way to dispose of those is to plant a new forest.

Sooner or later you may be using these materials. Current server I play on I have at least 13 double chests of dirt and/or grass blocks alone.

Maybe you should throw away primed TNT? Not usually good to have that sitting around in storage.

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.
Worth more than diamonds on my server. Diamond tools and armor are renewable. Lily pads are scarce.
