I was wondering if it is legal to copy creations from another server and place it on your server.
Apparently, a creation from another server got copied and placed on my server. Now the other server is furious and asks me to remove it. If I don't, they said they will make us "learn our lesson".
Now, is there anything illegal with this scenario; or are they just being selfish and immature? I would like to add that their server is public and they do not have a copyrwite on their creation (if that's even possible).
I think the only way it'd be illegal is if you were making money off of it or it was copyrighted, or a combo of both (Which I highly doubt either of which are the case)

Actually, if you are making money off it AND it is copyrighted.
It's not illegal, but however he makes you pay probably would be illegal.

I have discovered a truly remarkable proof of this, which this margin is too small to contain.

I gave the creator credit but they still said they are going to make us "learn our lesson".
Hello, owner of the server you stole from here.
I'd like to add in the additional information he never told you:
1. He tried to pass our spawn(what he stole) off as something he built
2. He did not give credit to our staff who built it
3. When asked to remove it, he said he would. We returned a few days later, he said he changed his mind.
His server also accepts payments from players they've been attracting with the spawn.
I don't believe the legality of it was ever in question, Just the ethics, but Beast does bring up an excellent point.
Another tidbit We actually tried to compromise with them about crediting the server and not just the individual creator, because It would just seem like the creator was a player on their server when he was not, but they refused us again.
(By the way this spawn was never avialable to download or posted anywhere It was taken directly from our server without our knowledge)

1. Is there anything different with it?
2. What if he made it?
3. What ever is on his server, is on his server. You have no control over what he has one his server. Unless you pay the monthly rent for the server then you have no control over his server and threatening him will just make the cause worse.
4."payments" meaning donations are perfectly fine.

Although the OP never said how he got the spawn, as there is many means of it.
World downloading mods, building it himself or getting it from one of the admins/mods of the server. With the second and third making it perfectly legal for the OP to use.
Looking at BeastsMC, I don't really see why the complaining. CathalCraft is rather small compared to you and continuing on about making money, there's $5 in their donation container which was donated by an Admin in February.
So get over it, Stop complaining. This is Minecraft. Your "Server Admins". Act like one.

Legally, they cannot touch you. Doesn't stop them from griefing your server though...
its not illegal they don't own a patent on the creation. I think by "learn you lesson" they mean grief or DDoS your server. but yeah remove it, its better to be original rather than take there servers creations

Personally, I hope their goal is to DDoS or DoS, so then hutt and his admins can take them to court, teaching them a lesson on learning when to let things go.
EDIT: their/them meaning the owner/admins (depending who's complaining) of the server with its own original spawn.
Everyone here (mostly) is saying that this action of taking a build off of someone else's server is legal.
This assumption is not valid, and copying their build is probably illegal. I'm no lawyer, but I do know that once a work is created, it is protected by US copyright laws. I looked it up online just now and I've confirmed this.
Assuming whoever built the spawn is a US citizen (which may or may not be a good assumption), they have complete control over their works. And you copied it, you are breaking copyright laws.
If this were the case, who would have ownership of a creation that a player makes on a server that isn't their own? The player who made it, should own the creation, but some servers claim ownership over anything made on the server.
If someone helped on a large scale creation that many players were working on in a server, and then said player decided to change servers, what right would they have to copy the creations that they may have put significant time and effort into?
If a player copied a structure from a different server, then made changes to it, at what point is it different enough to be considered their own creation?

If going by what you said, that means anything made in Minecraft is straight away copyrighted to the person making it. Which means that house you built is copyrighted.
This is Minecraft. A Game. Nothing in the game is copyrighted besides the game itself so stop complaining and again, Whats on the OP's server is on their server. You don't decide what is on it. You don't pay for it.

I'm sure stuff gets copied from other servers pretty often. It would be hard to prove they were even the original creators of said structure.

That means they're planning on griefing you.
just IP ban all of them.

Just ignore threats.

you still can do it but people dont exactly like you copying thier work that may have taken a while to build
You decide

But beasts is probably telling the truth so what i would do is give them the credit and stop being dumb.
