I had most of my map unlocked(zoomed out as far as possible) but I wasn't being careful around a lava pool.. I didn't fall in, but I dropped it in! There wasn't even 3/4 left to explore, but now I have to start over!! I am so ready to just use creative mode... ._.
If there's a program/mod for this, can you tell me about it or how?
minecraft maps are infinite so you really can't explore the whole thing. If you want to explore the area just fly over it on far render distance.
Chunks stop spawning at around 32,000,000 x/z, so they're not really infinite. But yeah, flying over the area is the best option, or what I used to do, look through MCEdit

They do? I didn't know that but still that would be 4096,000,000,000,000 blocks. Thats a lot of area.
Oh, dude, that sucks! Make sure to make copies of your map by placing your map in the crafting table with an empty map...
Now, if you're willing to use a mod to make your map, I'd say you might as well fly around in creative. You could also spawn yourself speed two potions in creative if you're willing to run around on foot.
If you want to get it done really fast, you could try creating a modified potion, like one with speed 10 or something fun like that. ;D
If you're willing to do that, use Kamyu's Tools, but beware that high-end speed potions will do crazy stuff to your FOV.
When you make a new map, open it up once to get it started. Then, make another Empty Map, craft that alongside your current map, and voila you now have a copy of the map. As you update one map, the other will fill in as though they were the same map. The benefit is that you can keep one safe in a chest in your house while you see the world. Should you lose the map that you're carrying while you're out and about, you always have a spare back home.

You didnt lose your map dont worry just go to your saves folder in your .minecraft, select the save that you played and then go to the "data" folder, there you will see all the map data. If you didnt create a new map after you lost the whole thing, create one, and then edit the number of the last second map so that it will be equal to the last map's name(sound too complicated I know Look at the example) For example; you lost your map #1 and you want to recreate it. Create a new map and it will be called map #2. Then go to your "data" folder and change the map_1.dat there to map_2.dat. And there you go... When you look at map#2 in minecraft you will see the lost one.
PS: just to let you know, this trick used to work before this scale feature came so I'm not exactly sure that it will work in 1.5 but it worths trying.

That is the smallest scale he talks about the biggest scale.
