Okay.
I just wanted to make a thread about this because it SHOULD be common sense but for some reason people still want superultramegahypercharged obsidian tools or whatever.
Mods like Metallurgy have always made me cringe. The tools look nice. There's a lot of variety.
But it's redundant as hell.
Seriously.
Minecraft has five tiers of tools, wood, stone, iron, gold, and diamond. That is all it will ever need, ever, for the rest of eternity. Ever. No more. And why do I say that? Enchantments. More specifically unbreaking and efficiency. A tool with Unbreaking III makes a tool last about four times as long. That includes diamond tools. A tool with Efficiency IV makes most blocks break instantly except for obsidian (which still breaks crazy fast). If you have a diamond pickaxe with unbreaking III and efficiency V, isn't that just as good as the superultramegahypercharged obsidian tools you want added so badly?
Sure those enchantments are difficult to get, but it SHOULD be hard to get. It's the fastest and strongest possible pickaxe in Minecraft.
Armor doesn't have unbreaking, though. Oh well. Still, protection IV is still a crazy overpowered enchant.
Well, I think Minecraft has enough tool tiers to handle anything and everything headed its way right now. Maybe later things may or have to change. IMHO
Once you put a fair bit of time into a world, you eventually run out of high level content, and the game starts to become dull and boring as there is no content that people at this level can explore. This is probably why modpacks such as Tekkit and Feed the Beast are so popular - because they add more high level content.
I do agree with you though, nothing beats a great enchanted diamond tool which lasts forever. We probably dont need better tools, but more rare high level content is needed, we need another update similar to the adventure update.
What about more variety, sidegrades to the existing tiers, but with different up/downsides?
I kind of thought obsidian tools with a speed between wood and stone but hella durability would be pretty nice (but very low enchantibility) so it's like the opposite of gold
Although another tool tier is not necessary, I feel that there is way too much difference between iron and diamond durability. Although it does makes sense, in a way, I wish there was another metal tool tier, at least to balance it out a little more. Maybe just adding copper to take iron's durability place and moving iron from 256 durability to like 350-450 at the most. I'd say more, but iron isn't extremely strong by comparison to diamond, so there has to be a 'clear' difference between the two, other than visually.

i guess. copper would be stupid though. just make ruby in between diamond and iron. ruby is cooler.

Well, I'm sorry for suggesting a stupid material...? I'd just rather make tools out of metals rather than gems. Besides, diamond would, probably, lose some value because of a competing gem being added to the game.

I've occasionally wished there were more tiers, simply because it's so easy from the get go to be ready to start gathering diamonds, and if lucky you can get diamonds very shortly after that.

Agreed, though I've always figured a way to refine iron into steel would be more fitting a inbetween iron-and-diamond tier.
