Me and my freinds were talking about wich tool is the most important. We couldent agree. So in our conclusion, we have decided to post a topic on the forums on wich one is better.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. write wich type of tool is the best. 2. type why you think it is the best. 3. Post it!
Definitely pickaxe. All of your main resources come from a Pickaxe, and I can't think of a single thing off the top of my head that actually -requires- an Axe or Shovel to obtain. They make life easier, but they aren't required.
The Hoe is pretty useless. It's good for early-game farming, but some people find food via other methods. It's handy to have one around if you feel like setting up some farmland, but really I have no problem cutting down a random tree, making use of it, and then just trashing it. They aren't even worth storing in chests for me.
Sword? Nah. They're good for when you're exploring cave systems or braving the night, but proper base design can save a lot of trouble from monsters. Intelligent players can continue to grow and expand without frequently finding themselves face-to-face with monsters they can't either deal with or run from.
The Bow and Arrow is pretty handy, but Pickaxe is more valuable (and personally, I'm a terrible shot). I'm far better off with swords.
In order to progress further into the game, you MUST mine different materials. Preferable iron or diamond. To do this, you need a pickaxe. If you don't have this, you're limited to wood tools, and these take AGES to do the simplest tasks. A shovel can't get you any iron (it can, but not directly). An axe can't mine cobblestone or diamonds. And a wooden sword isn't going to help you locate the end portals, or fight off the enderdragon.
Does this even need to be asked? You can dig and chop anything with your hands, but you can't mine anything without a pickaxe (unless you consider breaking glass and glowstone mining). Hoe is pretty important too for farming, but you could get food somewhere else. You can kill mobs without a sword.

1. your brain.
2. because without it you can not use any other tools.
The pickaxe obviously. It's the only tool that allows you to acquire certain types of blocks that are otherwise impossible to acquire. Okay so lots of other tools allow you to acquire unique blocks, but those acquired via pickaxes are the most important. Virtually all ores, all kinds of stone (Stone, Cobble stone, stone bricks, bricks, Sandstone Moss stone, etc), obsidian and netherack to I believe (not sure on that last one. I've never actually tried to break netherack without a pick. Furnaces too.
Next is the sword. Simple but efficient, it's likely the weapon you will use to kill the most mobs. Defending yourself is essential to success in Minecraft, unless you don't play survival on anything but peaceful.
Then you have Axes and Shovels : They aren't even required to acquire any block, with the exception of snowballs with shovels, but they accelerate the process of clearing soft blocks, acquiring sand, woods and all derieved wood materials so much that doing any of that larbor without them is a stupid waste of your time.
Fishing pole : yes Fishing pole. In the hands of a master, this tool is very scary. Ghast become a joke with these, and even Teleporting endermen can do nothing but QQ. This tool is immensely underestimated, plus it can bring you limitless supply of food, but not very quickly.
Then you have Hoes and Bows : Neither are essential and they have very specific limited use, but both make your life way easier A good shot with a bow might even make it his main weapon once he's secured a large supply of arrows. But I tend to prefer the sword because it beats carrying endless stacks of arrows and cluttering your inventory space. Infinity I is my favorite bow enchant for this exact reason. Hoes serve a singular purpose, but the number of crops that need titled land and their derieved applications makes hoes essential in the early days of a game. Once your field is done however, this tool will rot in your chest forever.
The flint and steal : You will likely love this tool once you get to the nether part of the game. It will be one of your more precious friends. But aside from lighting portals, creating controlled fires in fireplaces for example and being likely one of the favorite griefer tools, especially before the fire nerf, flint and steal never see much use.
Finally the Shears : Overall, shears and completely useless in the strick survival sense. You only ever need to make 1 or 2 bed per person per world and there's more than enough sheeps around the world to do just that by simply killing them. However, shears shine when it comes time to built awesome stuff, which is not a goal that all players of Minecraft share, but I would think than most do, and those that do not and simply want to "beat" the game by killing the Enderdragon and wasting the potential of Minecraft, but if they aren't interested in building, you can't really change their mind. Anyways shears allow you to accumulate endless supplies of very useful decorative blocks, for the 14 colors of wool (I think it's 14...) to leaves, lily pads and vines and all kinds of grown grass. Some people are actually surprised when I show them everything that can be harvested with shears. They all thought it was only good for sheep wool.
Ultimately for me all of these tools are useful since I do pretty much everything there is to do in Minecraft, including building a lot of awesome stuff, but in survival mode, this is the order of importance I attribute to each of them.
The pickaxe, of course. Shovels and especially axes are mostly for the lazy (with a couple of exceptions), hoes are dispensable even for those like me (I'd just grow mushrooms instead of wheat), and swords, while very useful, just don't measure up to the tool that drives progress throughout the entirety of Minecraft.

"Sometimes, I just wanna give up, say 'I'm done with this mess' and go to bed. But you know what; you can't shrug off your responsibilities. You got to pull yourself up and meet the challenges head on. That's the only way you're gonna get ahead in life."
Probably a pickaxe, because to get to the end, you need to make eyes of ender.
To make eyes of ender, you need blaze powder.
To get blaze powder, you need a portal.
To make a portal, you need obsidian.
To get obsidian, you need a diamond pick.
To get diamonds, you need an iron pick.
To make an iron pick, you need a stone pick to get iron ore.
To create a stone pick, you need a wood pick to get cobble!
So, yeah... I think I have made my point. The pickaxe is the most useful tool in the game!
As for the other tools, they just make getting wood, dirt and other materials faster.

well, without that famous Minecraft Hand, you can not acquire a pickaxe, you can not hold a pickaxe, in fact you can not acquire anything at all without your blocky little HAND!

Like what? I'm pretty sure that if you can collect something with an axe or shovel, you can collect it (albeit more slowly) with your hand or any other item. Like I said above, only the pickaxe is required to advance. Other tools may make life easier, but you can get by without them.
[EDIT]: I guess farmland. You can't get farmland without a hoe. Well, technically you could enchant a pick or other tool with silk touch, then raid the farmland from an NPC village. But, farmland isn't actually necessary to advance in the game, and you don't normally "collect" it, anyway.
I'm genuinely surprised no one said water bucket. I love my water bucket for its versatility. I can scale sheer cliffs, descend safely into ravines, protect myself and any ores I mine from lava, etc. I use my water bucket nearly as often as I use my pickaxe, and I always have one with me. Water buckets ftw!

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.
1. It enables you to destroy stone and most other underground resources.
2. It does a good amount of mob damage (resource - 2 tiers)
