Lately, from some of the updates I have seen, most of the new items and blocks revolve around either obsidian, which I do agree with so that diamonds can actually be useful. The other is around redstone, which is starting to be really overused. Back on point, I think that exploration tools are really starting to lack in substance lately. I mean, its only a few basic tools to make going into ravines or caves a little less hazardous and more alluring to try and go into instead of avoiding.
-Rope (Mode of string from spiders) for decent from the edge of a ravine.
-Grappling Hook (Made from iron) for launching up into an area that you have'nt explored before in caves.
-Snorkel (Made of glass and string) to increase the amount of time you can last in water for splelunking purposes.
-Improved compass (one that actually points north instead of the initial spawn point)
-Portal (Made of Glowstone and obsidian) teleportation device that allows a player to move vast distances in mere seconds. Must have an entry and exit point. Is about the size of a doorway instead of the massive portal needed to access the Nether.
-Safety Net (Made of Cobwebs and string) slows the fall when you jump ontop of them from vast distances.
The safety net is more or less for caves that you know have hazardous drops so you can jump in with no worries about fall damage. Its also decorative too to look like a hammock if you position it correctly.

I like hammocks, and all the other ideas. There are plug-ins and mods for portals, but would be nice if it was in vanilla. But I don't quite follow the Grappling Hook, going to be hard to do that. Like, would it stick to the block itself?

I never use mods due to the fact that they never last long once a new update occurs. Anyways, a grappling hook is something that is mixed with a rope so that you can climb up to surfaces that you could'nt get up to before because you did'nt explore that region. For it to work, it would have to have a surface on the top of a given block so that the rope will drop down a given edge so the use can climb up to the place of origin. I'm no modder or programmer, so I can't really say how it would work, though I've seen plenty of uses for it in mods.Hell, most of the time I even avoid the nether because I always end up on the top section where huge falls into lakes of lava so exploration there without some kind of means to get down is a bummer. I'm sure that there would have to be a stopping point so that the game does'nt try to constantly spawn rope when it hits the surface of the rope and cause tons of lag.

I barely go into the nether, it's scary. Every time I warp to the nether I usually get spawned next to a squad of sadistic sword-wielding pigs. And I don't really like mods, heck, I never used them. Don't like downloading them, and configuring them to work, as most of the time I mess up my .minecraft folder. Anyways, the grappling hook would be cool, especially in the nether and deep caves. I like.
I'm totally for the rope for ascent/descent into pits or ravines. Carrying enough stick ladders to scale walls is tough, and once you climbed the wall you can't get the ladder with you without going back down... o.O Also, trying to place ladders while descending is not only tough, but most often fatal.
Of course, the option is to just burrow yourself down along the edge of the wall using a mining pick or shovel.
The rope should function basically the same way as vines on a wall does. It would be added as a permanent must-have item in my inventory immediately.
I like the Grappling Rope Idea. I hate getting down to ravines, and I normally rely on creating waterfalls to the bottom to get up and down, which is really not fun.

I like the idea of a rope. It makes sense considering the mechanics of the game and the materials required to make it.
Everything else I am iffy on because it's just awkward.
There is also the clouds moving in a single direction -- which is West, so you can find North in relation to that, and the grappling hook just seems like it was straight ripped off from Terraria. Mining is easy in minecraft, so it's not that difficult to get up somewhere.

I love these ideas, I agree that there needs to be more exploration and hazard avoiding tools.
There is a respiration enchant, but enchantments take a while to get, and you might not even get the one you want/need. The snorkle could have similar vision restrictions as the pumpkin, but a lot less extreme; enough so you know that you're wearing it.
Personally I've always thought the compass should point to the last bed you slept in, rather than your initial spawn. I like to explore and build houses in particular biomes, not be anchored to one place simply so I can find my way back easier. But I like your idea too, since it's hard to have a sense of where you are whenever come out the other end of a cave.
I like the rope idea the most, just thinking about the possibilities when it comes to houses and like you said, ravines. Instead of climbing up to your friends' mansion in he sky, the can just throw a rope down; allowing you to climb up. Or remove it mid climb for a good laugh.
Great ideas Rune, I'd love to see them implemented.
Although Pumpkins is right about most of these, these items would make these things easier to do earlier in the game. Also, Enderpearls will always be hard to get, unless you live right next to an Ender portal. Water buckets do work well, as does simply mining a path along the edge of a hole, but ropes/a grappling hook would be a lot faster. Also, portals could save a lot of time, even if you already exploit the Nether being one eighth the size of the normal world. However, I have a feeling that this thread is pointless because when the modding API comes out, you will easily be able to install the mods that do these things (I know for a fact there are already mods that put these items in the game, even the parachute).
EDIT: On second thought, I'm not sure about the safety net one, but I know if one digs a hole two blocks deep, then fills it with water, a fall from any height can be survived if one lands in said water.
Ropes : Ender pearls / Water bucket.
Grappling Hook : Ender Pearls / Water bucket
Snorkel : Torches / Enchantments / Signs / Doors
Portal : Pickaxe + F3
Safety Net: Water bucket
Compass: Sun / Clouds
Got to agree with PurpleTopHat, you just need experience to do these things without your ideas listed above.
lol what else? Cloud in a bottle?(terraria reference)
Parachute: Creative lol
I don't think you understand the point of this thread. We all know that water buckets help getting up and down from places, same goes for Ender Pearls. Yes we could just look at the sun and clouds instead of using a compass (I suppose that's what Notch thought anyway). And we could suspend the water in mid air with a sign.
The OP is just suggesting actual items to achieve these feats, instead of exploits. Some people don't mind things like that, but other people (such as myself) prefer a more sensible and in depth way of doing things. I don't see why you would argue against putting more craftable items in a game that is known for being able to craft items and explore. If anything, this would attract more people to the game, not everyone is going to know where to get iron to make that bucket so they can find some water and pour it over the edge of a cliff just to get down.
