I know the wiki says you can't get fortune 3 from level 30, but I just did yesterday on an iron pick! I have no way to prove I spent 30 levels on it, but I swear I did.
I know you can get it at level 30 but it's less then a 2% chance of getting it.
Yep The site that I listed can tell you the best level to get certain enchants or show you what your likely to get for a certain amount of levels.
Also I did my math wrong it's a 2.69% of fortune 3 at level 30.
They do this so that the people that do farm XP dont have an advantage over non farmers
Yeah, for sure. Believe me, this was made due to complete lack of a better idea. This "mechanism" doesn't ease out any advantage of farmers.
Right now I don't even use enchanting when I happen to get some decent level. I really would hate to dirty ma nice diamond pickaxe with an outrageously unfunny Silk touch
I find it funny there are complaining posts about the game being way too easy with enchanting, yet you are all saying it is too hard. Here is some information: the selection process for enchantments is actually pretty complicated; look at the wiki. Honestly, when I enchanted MY diamond pick at level 50, I got Efficiency V and Fortune III. When I enchanted my diamond sword at 25, I only got Sharpness III. I can't tell if people here are lying when they said "I GOTZ ROBOT LAZERZ ATZ LEVEL ONEZ, BT ONY AIRZ AT LVLZ 50"
Yeah, some of the people are probably exaggerating. Also getting sharpness 3 with a level 25 enchant is pretty good.
I can see both sides of this: On the one hand, people would like to be properly rewarded for their efforts. Like if I spent time going out at night hunting mobs to get to level 50 and enchant my Diamond pickaxe, I would want something good, regardless if it random.
On the other hand, randomness is what makes enchanting fun and exciting; if you know exactly what you are going to get at X level, enchanting would get very stale and boring after a while.
I think that the system is alright, but could use some changes. The randomness could be less random. I have an idea. What if they added a 2nd slot where you put an item so that you have better chances of a certain enchantment? That would be good. Also, levels should determine the level of the enchantment, and how many enchantments too.
Yeah. Notch & Jeb sucks cos' they got tons of money and can't come out with +20 mobs each week, improve their system, etc.
And do you want to know why? 1. They are just like everyone else. Just cos' they made a game, does not make them magical beings that are supposed to be quicker and better than every modder out there. 2. Compability. You can't just add tons of new stuff without thinking of plugins/mods/multiplayer it would take too much time than it's worth, having to wait so long for a feature in a game that is very important to +5 million people. 3. The enchanting system is flawed, yes, and that's why (on most servers) they have a plugin that gives you the ability to "re-pick" your enchantment. (Like the Heroes mod)
We/They have to pay respect to the population of Minecraft Community, and that's over five million people who have bought the game, aswell as +25 million who have registered.
Making giant changes, etc. is going to have an effect on that playerbase.
So fr what I can see on this thread, people who have farms are ok with the random enchantment system, and people without exp farms ae raging about it... My exp farm is just a mob tower with an edited bottom floor, and it gets me tons of CDs
I actually agree with this to be honest. I am so sick fo working my butt off to gain exp the old fashioned way (no exp farming) only to have it thrown in my face with a pathetic choice system.
Seriously if im magically inclined to the point of making weapons special surely I can choose which speciality I want....I have never heard of a wizard casting a spell and hoping its the right one.....no its a very precise art and in this case it should be too. You can keep the randomization if need be but at least label them so we can see what were getting then we can choose whether to take it or just try again for another attempt at something good!
Actually, there is Wild Magic, from the Forgotten Realms campaign setting in Dungeons and Dragons. Spellcasters would attempt to cast a spell, and then would revert to a percentile chart, which had many interesting, random effects. Many of which were "cast another spell randomly." I like it, for the flavor.
As for the enchantment bit. I'm okay with it. You rack up points over time, and get to trade them in for something randomly useful. Perhaps not great, but better than nothing.

A recent study shows that marriage is a leading cause of divorce, in the United States.
You complain about it being a ripoff that you spend hours to get XP, but don't we all play Minecraft hours on end before anyways? What's the difference? <_>

whats the difference? you have to go out and kill mobs in a dedicated trip, which can be fun but is mostly tedious.
its the fact that at the end of it is a big ripoff, how can you even defend the enchantment system?

They are not ****ing just like everyone else, the point of what i was saying was that other modders without money do alot more than them
they have MILLIONS to spend and its their JOB to make the game, people in their spare time make mods faster, better and with no promised pay.
Your choice of word "ripoff" is like 'Mojang riped me off of my money on this stupid game!' The enchanting system is an option that a user may willingly choose to do or not. Look at EthosLab and his XP farms. Within minutes you can get tons of XP.
I LOVE the enchanting system. I will list some benefits of enchanting that have NO RELATION to enchanting.
1. It encourages users to build traps for mobs. This can be a fulfilling and rewarding project if you ever get bored. Makes passing the time and using a little creativity making a more enjoyable experience.
2. It encourages users to stop being a little baby and fight some mobs. Maybe killing a few mobs will make it more enjoyable to themselves. Maybe they won't be scared of mobs anymore and will play beyond Peaceful again, thus giving another element of Minecraft to work with.
Enchanting is a rewarding experience quite literally. You choose to do it or not. You can say mining is a ripoff because it wastes hours of your time. You can say building a house is a ripoff because it waste some of your time. I guess if I thought like you everything will be a ripoff. NOTHING IS WRONG WITH ENCHANTING. It is an option, and provides benefits that both can help you obviously, but also subconsciously.
The way you are explaining how the enchanting is a ripoff is the same way of how you are describing how Minecraft is a ripoff (did you even read my post?)
THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT. It's OPTIONAL. Minecraft is not meant for your enjoyment in 30 seconds. That's what boring old Creative is for. In my world I am very happy and enjoying myself because I EARNED myself there. That's what Minecraft use to be about. Your enjoyment comes through rewarding yourself, nowadays sometimes Mojang gives you a hand to cross the street. No reward, no sense of danger, nontheless it is still a fun game. I reward myself with tons of XP killing through the night, instead of sleeping, gaining XP, clearing mobs for a new build, then build in the morning.

yeah i read your post it was pretty self contradictory saying that it encourages people to build mob traps while it encourages people to go fight mobs.
and i enjoy earning things too, which is why the enchantment system is a ripoff of your time, you spend all this time getting the levels just to gamble it away
do you think if a working man did a job loading trucks and moving heavy things all day causing back problems to earn money for his family then just went to vegas and gabled it all away saying he will get something better if he does that, do you think his family would be happy about that?
it's unfair either way you look at it, like a user said level 1 isn't level 7 and level 10 isn't level 50.

Do you even know that's not even gambling your XP away? You can decode the message via the wikipage.
Besides your argument only helps mine. If didn't get the enchantment you want...go get some more XP and trying again! You know why people gamble? To lose some you gain more eventually. In Minecraft it is a virtual world and the so called "money" (XP) you can get is free! Why are you calling something a ripoff if it is handed to you for free? Instead of complaining about the enchanted item you get, use it, try it out, see how it helps, make the best of it, and when it's time to get another enchanted item try again. Or you can be like me and get every single enchantment for every single item just because he likes Minecraft that much.

well for one you shouldn't have to look up a long wall of text on a wiki page to figure out one of the games features
another thing is it is not free in the least sense, maybe if you could remove the enchantment it wouldn't be bad, but you have to get the resources for tools and earn the exp, you completely overlooked that.
its not very fun working for 30-50 levels knowing you might only get bane of the anthropods 4 or 3 which doesn't help your gameplay in the least, especially since spiders are weak, but bane of the anthropods is just an example of a bad enchantment.
and i even tried in creative, it has taken me stacks of 64 diamond swords to get a decent enchantment that was fitting of the level i spent on ityou definitely can't say that it isn't gambling and you don't eventually get more from gambling, it's LUCK meaning you could NEVER get back what you pay its all random
I know you can get it at level 30 but it's less then a 2% chance of getting it.
