This update wasn't bad, I don't see the point in moaning about it. Did is solve all problems? No. Was it a step in the right direction? Yes. Compare it to beta 1.8, and this world generator knocks it out of the roof. We got some form of a temperature system. Height variation was relaxed (But could be better). Not every biome looks the same with how many variations there are now.
We should be thankful Mojang at least attempted given the fact that they are trying to prioritize other things, instead of moaning about it.
This post about sums up my opinion on 1.7. While it clearly did not fix all the problems with terrain, it at least gave some hope that Mojang hadn't disregarded it completely. Though it may be a bit sloppy in its current state, what we have in 1.7 is the basis of a terrain system with a lot of potential. Whether or not they choose to expand on it in the future is yet to be seen. Hopefully, they will take it off the back burner sometime in the near future and focus on it a bit more after they finish up with all of the overhauls to systems and such.

One problem about the current terrain generator is that when you find a savanna, it will take 12 more hours to find a ice spikes biome without crossing the ocean.
1.7 have many new awesome biomes and terrain generation changes as far as i know.
Yeah but it's still not we want, heck if i was concerned I'll probly just make the terrain use Noise/Perlin Noise variation (But that's likely a bad idea), but the point is that the terrain is still mostly fixed, Theres no really variation and more biomes will not help.

We have mountains that can go into clouds now after 1.7, if that counts for anything. None of this is amplified terrain, just default.

Nope, it's default generation. Extreme Hills were tuned to go above 128, the 3rd picture is a Savanna Plateau M (Which can go up to 255)
The fundament for the new terrain is now builded, so in the next updates it is possible to improve things, without constantly causing chunk borders.
What exactly was done? I haven't looked in the 1.7 code since 13w36a.
One should also always take in mind that the beta versions generated the world in a total different manner then the current versions. In the beta world, biomes were decided by the seed and not by the generator itselve.
And they still are. The terrain gets changed to conform biomes, not opposite.
That's why biomes were not that restrictive and why heigh variation could be generated independent from biomes.
It still can be done with very little code changes.
So if the terrain would change, the biomes would not fit anymore. Just try to load an old beta world in the current version and you will see that very clear. Snowing in the desert, snow golems dying in parts of the tundra, that kind of stuff.
And if you will load Beta 1.8 world in 1.0, or 1.0 world in 1.1, that will happen too.
In beta, Mojang could hardly add new biomes and so change the world, without really breaking old worlds.
If they didn't do it, it doesn't mean that it could not be done. But yes, they never changed biomes in Alpha 1.2.0–Beta 1.7.3 period. And still managed to improve terrain in almost every version. Without breaking seeds.
I'm quite sure that that is the reason why Mojang made the current generator biome based. It has its limits indeed, but it does not break worlds if there are more biomes or other fundamental features added in the generator.

Just like before. And, do you know that pre-1.8 system didn't give chunk borders in this case? You could add a biome, and only sometimes see harsh borders to that biome on the edge of old explored area, other biomes would not move, and now they would.
Worlds don't have to break after every update of the terrain.

Structures are easier to implement, because Mojang can choose biomes for them.

Exalm, if you load a beta world in the current generator, the biomes of the old world will not fit anymore. For example: if you spawn in a desert in beta, but the seed now provides a tundra on spawn, the desert will have snowy weather and the grass you place there will have the color of tundra grass. So it still looks like the desert, but it has become a tundra biome. And if it is a large tundra, it will also cross through the forests and fields beside the desert, with the possibility that the lakes there will suddenly freeze. This is not happening if you load a 1.0 world in 1.7. The old biomes will then still stay the way they are. Changed features of the biomes itselves will of course also apply there, like the snow on high mountain tops in the EH biome, or the lack of snow in old taiga's, but the biomes are still correct.
With the fundamentals of the new generator, I ment the new biome arrangement, the new (technical) biomes and the changes in how the world looks like (less oceans, more rocky mountains, etc.).

Not even close to "completely". It's still very relevant in many ways (Crappy beaches, mountains are still technical biomes, swiss cheese caves, lack of variation in tree density, bad underwater geography, etc) . The OP could use an update, but no one has seen Chaos Guardian in a while (at least to my knowledge)

The majority is fixed at all.
The only real fix they did was the Biome Transitions, which still aren't that good.
