If all biomes of the same type will still look the same, it's like buying more RAM instead for an application with many memory leaks. It will work a bit longer, but will still run out of memory.
And here: With more biomes it will take a bit longer to explore them all, but, since their number is not infinite, you will still know what they will contain once you see the border.
There we go, problem number one with biomes, it's too repetive. So, what do we do about it? I already have an idea laid out for biome "landforms" that is either functional or for aesthetics (or both), for a survival map that I'm creating lore for. But it's getting late here so expect it a few days from now or tomorrow.
Well the point of this thread is to discuss a generator that pleases most people. Not everyone wants the old generator. The old generator also had some flaws, like biomes being too small. There's also stuff in the current generator that we want to keep, like jungles and structures.
Lol. I didn't know everyone was quoting me. Sorry.
Can I ask why everyone is against having old terrain back? I'm kinda curious, because I'm probably the only one that wouldn't mind bringing it back.
I thought that too... wow.
-I would like the old generator back too but if it could: (becuase new biomes and structures were added)
-generate the new biomes with a height like Jungles and Swamps (Swamps are optional because they're the ugliest biome ever)
-generate the new structures with an ON/OFF option before generating the world.
(As said above)
This video by Notch showcases how much more interesting the surface was after the Alpha terrain update up until the Beta 1.8 update:
I didn't get to play the game before the update when the worlds were actually 'better and fun' and had height variation, but this makes me cry! I just got Minecraft this year, about 2 months ago actually and I am starting to get bored of it already. I love the game and I'm addicted but it gets real boring starting a new world, hoping to get some change from the others but they all end up looking the same pretty much. The world in this video is so beautiful, and you CANNOT find anything like it in any new worlds now. Seeds are pretty much pointless now, i totally agree and I want the worlds to look like the one in the video, except each new world would be different and not just copies! The update they did ruined the adventure aspect of the game, there is no variation in the terrain, only big mountains are in the extreme mountain/hill biome and caves never seem end.
I can get about two 40-64 things of iron in one ravine or cave and then go a little further and yet find even more stuff. Its all too easy and there is no real adventure. The worlds are just ugly IMO, i find random exposed stone areas, sandy cliffs near the ocean but need to be beaches, small excuse of a hill/mountain in some biomes and more. I want the old generator back, of course it doesn't have to all come back but the way it made the worlds look. I don't want to bring everything back from the old generator or throw out the new things with generator now. I love the biomes honestly but they all are flat IMO and just look like the other biomes but in a different world. The worlds looked actually fun and like you had to actually work for things and have ups and downs and not just mostly flat terrain. The worlds looked so pretty to be in, i want to climb up a mountain in the forest type biome and find a little cliff over looking the plains with flowers and grass and hills and a little waterfall leading into a pond and it all just molds perfectly. Not find one ugly mountain in the extreme mountain/hill biome that looks into the swamp with nothing in it or any terrain variation but maybe one block or two above the ground level.
(What I say is completely true of how i feel about this and what i want like many others do. The worlds to actually look fun to be in and have real adventure and not just the same old same old worlds that are just ugly copies of each other... *sigh* So yes the terrain has become boring.)
Every one is complaining about there being to many minerals and large caves. Heck, I cant even get medium sized caves that have more than 8 pieces of coal and iron.

Hmm, well I guess it just happens too certain people's games then. I have found 41 Iron Ore just in the entrance of a cave. I'm always finding a lot of stuff to last me a long time. I guess its just luck too for some but me as I can find a lot of stuff right off bat easily. That's not luck too me, that's the game not making it more of challenge to find stuff and actually having to work for things to survive IMO. >.<
Having played the game, I can say it's pretty nice though of course it needs some work. The biggest problem I have with it is that biomes are massive but there isn't too much in them; I explored a strip of a forest biome until I got up to level 6, and most of it was relatively similar to the rest except for structures. There was height variation, and I did stumble across some rather unique-looking places, but most of it was the same. Unfortunately I didn't get to see any of the other biomes since they're so damn huge.
The structures are done much better than Minecraft's structures. All of them but the Mountain Dungeon, which is essentially a random huge plateau with a boss on top, fit in with the environment and all of them have a good reason to be conquered. The towns are much more lively that Minecraft's towns, being larger and having multiple districts, but best of all the shopkeepers are actually reasonable in their prices... maybe even TOO reasonable in some cases (a high-powered bomb or lantern costs nearly as much as a much weaker one).

I tend to find a ton of iron just inside caves as well. Heck, usually all throughout the cave.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
Minecraft has a tendency to follow basic rules of reality. Exceptions are done only to decrease lag or increase gameplay value. Realistic terrain would have no effect on either one, thus it wouldn't be detrimental to the game and could be accepted into minecraft.
Basic rules of reality? Heh. Heh. You mean like how you can build a floating house, and you can find diamonds and lava at a depth of 60 meters? And how you can swim up waterfalls?
If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 90% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 10% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens.
We need more ocean things. Like, a lot more. All I think of when I hear the word "ocean" now is basically a giant endless basin filled with water with ugly, circle dirt/sand/clay patches on the floor, and the only signs of life there are squids.

That's not how Minecraft works, mate.
Did you even my post after the word 'reality'? All your conflicts you've presented match my exception of gameplay. Floating blocks and swimming up waterfalls are all done because adding physics would make the game lag.
The other two make me question your Geological knowledge. Lava is just molten rock, it can be found anywhere rocks are heated, and diamonds are formed when coal is compressed and heated (They are actually pretty common, however a company in South Africa called DeBeers buys, stores and never sells them).
Hey, come on guys, we might get lucky. We don't know really anything about what they're doing but the fact it's a biome update. They might change all together, we just don't know yet.

Because biome update can mean multiple things, more biomes, changing existing biomes, biome terrain changes, etc. We'll probably see what will really happen in a few weeks once the snapshots come out.

And making all SSP worlds run on internal servers doesn't cause lag? Where have you been?
Magma at 60 meters below sea level. Heh. You will never find pools of magma or lava at such a depth. Ever. To be stationary and in liquid form simultaneously, magma must be under enormous heat and pressure. Like, inside-the-mantle heat and pressure. Sure, you can melt a rock at any depth and it will stay liquid for a couple minutes, but unless it's being constantly heated by an external source, such as heat from the Earth's core, it will cool and solidify. This is why magma erupting from volcanoes hardens so quickly; it has no heat source and is under very low pressure.

Most diamonds are usually in a shallow point of the mantle, otherwise 150km down, not 60 meters. Diamonds are usually found scattered around a volcano on the surface, they dont mine 150km down, Also... Wouldn't it be geologically impossible to have natural lava lakes on the surface / 10-100 meters underground without a nearby volcano or a hotspot?

Heaven forbid they do absolutely nothing about the terrain. I know that is highly unlikely but just thinking about it makes it seem more and more likely.
Hmm in 1.7 they may be adding terrain sliders that were mentioned before.
Agreed.
