We could take the Kingdom of Loathing route, and ensure nobody gets in the forums without passing a literacy test (with a 24 hour cooldown for if you score below like 90%)
That would reduce the amount of morons on this forum significantly, but then there would be nobody to laugh at and Notch probably wouldn't get money from little kids who borrowed money from mommy and daddy for their online crack because they can't access the forums.

Don't need to do that, when they request admission you need only ask yourself one question, "Are they in my clique?" to find out for sure.
I just think it's a bit ridiculous when going on the minecraft forums feels like going back to highschool.
A lot of the Minecraft community gets up every weekday and goes to (guess what?) High School. MC actually has a pretty decent online community. When you compare it to Xbox LIVE, this place is like our own private heaven.
I don't frequent the Minecraft Survival, 1.9 Discussion and General Discussion forums anymore. Outside of this thread, those forums are eyeball-deep in stupid.
The only forums that have brains are the Redstone, Modding and Texture Pack forums.
@GordonChin: Go the SomethingAwful route, but even harsher? Very unlikely, but yes please.
The redstone forums is a little over my head with all of the processors people build. Heck, I can handle most redstone machinery. Auto-farms, BUD switches, and nifty gadgets for adventure maps are all very intriguing, but I just can't keep up with all the ubercomplexity these people come up with. It's... overwhelming to say the least.
As for mods, I'm just starting to lighten up to them, but still haven't downloaded anything beyond the latest MCPatcher for Sphax's texture pack/reflective waters... but MAN do I love the internal mob randomizer mod they added

Oh, by no means can we compare the two. I still refuse to buy an XBOX because of the FPS fanboyism attached to it. I just can't get into that community at all, it's just so unsaveable.
In the MC Discussion forums, anyone can easily get away with blatant trolling, thread derails and outright flaming.
Even the Runescape forums I used to go to were better moderated.
Freaking runescape was ruled by an iron rod during my entire 4-5 year stay in the game. I actually thought it was too strict. I mean, when they made world PVP at the cost of the wilderness (for some bullcrap reasons of scams), and then implemented the market system they did, I just couldn't deal with it. Game communities should be anarchic, not authoritarian, lol.
One critique I would offer to your assessment, is with the percentages you use and how you define some of the categories.
First, I don't think that 1/3 of the forum posters are white knighters. I would probably say the blind white-knights are probably closer to 10-15%.
Just because someone is happy with Minecraft and is willing to show their appreciation, does not mean that they are automatically blindly obedient to Notch or Mojang. There is a large portion of people who really do believe in the answer "its beta". To some of those people, the phrase "its beta" is simply synonymous with "be patient, wait for the fixes, and FTLOG, stop whining". This philosophy does not make them "White Knighters".
I would also take issue with your annoyance with the "Lets Play'ers". Think back to one of the early times you had to get up in front of a class at school and read one of your book reports. Remember how awkward that was? How you fidgeted? I would give a majority of the young people making Minecraft videos a pass, simply because most likely, they have little or no experience with performing in that sort of situation and are not really used to it. Now, on the other hand, once they make a dozen videos, or many dozens, or hundreds, they will know how to act and explain whatever they are trying to explain with ease. A good example of these people can be found in some of the very successful and popular Minecraft YouTube channels.
One category you forgot to include, are the forum-griefers -- those people who just start topics or post to existing topics, to troll, to cause chaos, to start arguments, or waste peoples time. If I had to put a percentage on those people, I would say maybe 3-5%.
Personally, I believe it is this category that is causing the most irritation and the most problems on these forums, because these people are not always obvious.
You just have to decide what you want in a community and join an appropriate one to suit your own needs.
Maybe I'm just a sociopath, but I just really lost all benevolence for gaming communities since I abruptly quit iRO. (lawl, clan drama, civil wars, girlfriend problems, etc.) I just seem more things wrong than right, despite nice individuals.
Hello :smile.gif: I understand your frustration but as an individual I do not totally agree.
1a: Whiners
Yes! Every single game on the internet has boatloads of these and it has been a popular sport since online play started( ex. Doom). These people seem to be so many because they are the loudest. They are the people who make post after post trying to get others to agree with them to justify their viewpoint. For some reason they seem to feel that if they are loud enough and get enough people to agree with them that they can force changes they want implemented. This is not their fault, this is game developers faults. Looking back at the history of many games, how many things have been nerfed because 20 or 30 people made noise and kept making noise? I can think of at least one instance in every single game I have played online. I think that the problem is that people who enjoy the game and the way it was made or intended to be played, do not feel the need to make so much noise. Nothing can really be done about it , all that can really be done is to find a group of people that feel the same way , and play with them.
1b: The 1.7.3ers
This group can be easily slid into the same group of people as the first. The difference being that they wanted a different type of game and their problem is that it isn't THEIR game, it is Mojang's game. The way to handle these people I think is to ignore them and they will happily no update their game and be a niche group of players that can only play with themselves. *shrugs* I personally play 1.9.5 so , I never see them.
2 : White Knighters
a: The best part of the game is the whimsical nature of the developers! Silly additions like the snow golem, to me, was like someone giving me a new toy to play with. I know many disagree but I do not understand the panic about it since , if you do not like them, DONT MAKE THEM!! Good NESS how easy is that? I know that people are Dying for a realistic survival/sandbox game, I am one of them. Minecraft Can and will be this once it is released and mods are made that supplement the realism and nix the silly stuff. Why complain and fight when the game is so VERY moddable. So I'm one of the Many who enjoy the developers whimsical ways with the game.
b: You have to understand that Notch, to some, is a hero. He worked for others , was ignored then said , screw this I'm gunna do it myself. People respect that and like all heroes, people will back him up no matter what he does or doesn't do. These people I do not see as a bad part of the community, I see them and say "gosh I'm glad I'm not like that but it's nice that people appreciate such a great guys ideas." It is hard but I think this is another group , that if they annoy you, it's best to just skip over em. No one is making you read their posts. :tongue.gif:
3: Let's Players
As the video guy here on the forums I would have to both agree and disagree with you on this point. I agree that too many people think that all it is , is press record and act like a idiot for 5 to 30 min and it's a let's play video that everyone wants to see. Or that since they can't think of anything to say, talking about how mom grounded them for picking their nose in church and how bogus that is, is interesting to anyone. Very few Let's plays are any fun to watch and it really takes a certain type of person to do it so that anyone can sit through the whole thing.
It is NOT totally the player's fault though. Please place some of the blame on YouTube. YouTube , by offering people money for certain amounts of subscribers, offering more upload time, and offering money for regular subscribers and views, has created the culture of Please subscribe, press the giant flashing annotation and subscribe, get me so-many-subscribers or I won't make another one, or get me so-many-subscribers or I won't make the tutorial! It is endlessly annoying and ruins most videos when this is done. But why WOULDENT they try when money is involved for Any age person making videos? If you were to find let's player videos that you liked you would notice that the very best of them, don't give a crap about subscribers and are doing it because they are having fun, experiencing sheer joy at playing the game!
There are a few, very few Let's players that are "diamonds" in the rough, you just have to find them :smile.gif:
I have a feeling if you do not give up yet , you will find a group of people that have the same views with, and enjoy the game as much as it , in my opinion, deserves to be enjoyed!

"Wazz that Charlie??" "I think its a Minecraft video, maybe its upside down." Epic monkeys have epic stashes!

True. Vocal representation =/= actual community %

I think there's a vaguely defined line that is crossed eventually, that every NON-white knighter can recognize when someone begins to cross it.
I would also take issue with your annoyance with the "Lets Play'ers". Think back to one of the early times you had to get up in front of a class at school and read one of your book reports. My beef IS with the charismatic, successful let's players, because of what the game turns into because of it.

As true as it is, griefers have always existed, and I don't see it as part of the downfall of minecraft, but just as an ever-present issue that no game, no matter how healthy the community is, will have.
Freaking runescape was ruled by an iron rod during my entire 4-5 year stay in the game. I actually thought it was too strict. You can compare the two though. You wanna look at a community that truly sucks, LIVE is the perfect example. The MC community has some overly opinionated youngsters on it, that as an adult, you have to ignore and inform. It just seems like we have a terrible community because usually the ignorant have the loudest voices.

Doesn't hurt if I'm not.
Fonzie level of confidence.

Most annoying bunch of little ****s out there. Complain about the smallest little things and will not give the "rpg elements" ******** a rest.
They whine on not getting enough and when they do, they just complain more and more.
But this community does NOT suck. I have other game suggestions of communities that are 10 times worse.
Even the Runescape forums I used to go to were better moderated.
