Despite my loving the game itself, I think the community is rather annoying.
Now don't get me wrong, I've never been a fan of any online community, but Minecraft is a game I have an exceptional attachment to. We have some major issues in the community that make me run from any public servers like it's the plague. There's a list of people who are frustrating, I'm sure you all are at least aware of their presence.
1a: Whiners-- All games have them. The MC community is no stranger to this. The roughly 20% of this forum that are violently opposed to MC's content since 1.8 is ridiculous. Their loud and excessive rambling about the game's direction in BETA, despite Notch's original view of survival being nearly spot-on with what it is now. Despite these whiners, they will disappear over time as they get over their massive butthurt and move on... a small number of them are less hopeful.
Now, in the past, noisy whiners have, despite coming off as belligerent twits, actually contributed to MC's gameplay value. That isn't the case as of yet. Maybe there just hasn't been enough time for works of art like this to arise in the modding community, but instead, we have the next group.
1b: The 1.7.3ers-- These group of violently conservative hermits are dwindling, but still alive. These are not the people who merely enjoy such works as MCNostalgia, but are instead primarily concerned with Notch's change in direction with the game, and Jeb's heavy involvement in it. They are a very loud breed that, despite being previous fans, are irrationally dispositioned against Notch for his small leaves of absence in coding 1.8, and for his "useless" additions to the game, like Snow-Golems.
2: White Knighters-- Need I explain white knighters? There's an exceptionally large fanbase, most likely 1/3 of the people who will reply to this thead, who are blindly loyal to Notch. Now, I exclude myself and my friends from this group for one particular reason: we, and countless others (hopefully), are personally pleased with the delightful childish randomness of Notch's direction in the game, be it toys like snow-golems, or whimsically unexpected mass updates like the Ender.
No, that isn't what I'm talking about, and I hope that's the biggest group out here. I'm talking about blind white knights. People who defend notch at every turn, despite the fact he's got a serious problem with being his own boss, and how he manages his workload.
And.... lastly... the biggest problem I've seen:
3: Let's players-- These guys sicken me. Imagine this, you search youtube for a video giving a tutorial on how to build some elaborate redstone device... or even just to see it. Instead of a responsible demonstration, you get some dolt who, for the first 2 minutes+ of their highly unnecessary 15 minute video, spend the majority of their time bobbing their head, staring at the invention they're supposed to be showcasing, and talking about how their day went, an email, or youtube channel they post on, what color of underwear they're wearing, what flavor of soda they're drinking, and what brand of tampon they use on dreary winter months when they get hyper-depressed becuase people aren't watching them do humdrum activities on youtube in favor of studying for finals.
Now this wouldn't be a problem if it were an uncommon occurrence, but the issue is that it happens to account for roughly 90% of all minecraft youtube videos.
Now, back in the days of X's Adventures, or Coe's Quest, we had a small number of star-characters doing this, and generally it was a cool phenomenon for the minecraft community. The issue is that now we have like 50 bajillion let's players, and everyone's part of some annoying youtube community of camwhores all apparently striving to be the next big thing. Now, outside of a kindred few like Ethoslab, none of them have contributed anything to the community but popularization among the same crowd, who then join the game and make their own annoying let's play videos with their annoying hipster friends.
I REALLY hope this isn't the growing population of minecrafters, but because of all of this, I have a gigantic distaste of the community, and have ostracized myself from it, perhaps missing out on something. I see the fun in joining epic multi-clan servers to achieve some glorious ePeen and rise above the rest, but when that server and that clan is full of one of the 3 listed characters above, I can't help but feel this game's glorious moments are stolen from many, who like me, see fault in all of these cliquey popularity contests and try to avoid it.
This is more of a rant than any kind of discussion, but it's something I've been wanting to say for quite a while.
Hello, I don't usually follow threads that I post in. So if you would like to have a civilized chat / reply / argument that is of the utmost importance, just PM me. =)
No, there's not. I've been in the MMO gaming community for a while too, branching through Runescape, staying forever in iRO, and eventually just giving up on WoW and TF2. I just think it's a bit ridiculous when going on the minecraft forums feels like going back to highschool.
I predict that a few patches after the "released" version is released, Notch will cease development as it is now, backtrack to an earlier version, sometime before the Alpha Halloween update perhaps, and fork the code to work on his "true vision."
You really can't find a game with a semi-large fan-base that doesn't have some people who make your blood boil, unfortunately. This game being no exception. =/

Studies have shown that 843,902,635 people are too lazy to read this number.
i agree with the LP's, there's indeed an excessive quantity of LP's of minecraft to really watch them all, and 90% of them aren't nothing but the same...
maybe is that there's also a BIG amount of kids (of course there are kids but im talking about the most childish) who play this game
anyway i don't mind really i just do what i want and ignore the rest :biggrin.gif:
Having an analytical review of what makes the community suck doesn't make me a rager. Now if I were to just sit here and insult them groundlessly, I'd be raging, but this is an issue that depresses me.
Don't forget the players who will explode into an absolute shitstorm if you make any suggestions pertaining to technology beyond redstone and the middle ages, such as cars or vehicles or modern weaponry. All you need to say is "more ranged weapons" and they'll start screaming at you to go play Call of Duty. :tongue.gif: There's also players who will get angry if you suggest that more should be added to minecraft -- it seems like alot of people who play this game really don't care what is added to the game and live with it, but if anyone suggests that more should be put in, they'll flame you.

Inorite? Hey, it's fine to disagree with you. I certainly don't think it should be in the game, but what you're dealing with isn't a person with some room for discussion. Your dealing with general internet flamers.

True, true.
Depends on a person's tolerance level actually.

Gotta agree with the OP, we really need more elitest totalitarianism in the Minecraft community. Gotta extinguish the fire before it starts, keep out the dumb-dumb heads with a mandatory subscription fee, all potential members must be interviewed by 3 members of Officer rank or above before membership is granted and of course, severe penalties for insubordination to keep the meat army in line.

We could take the Kingdom of Loathing route, and ensure nobody gets in the forums without passing a literacy test (with a 24 hour cooldown for if you score below like 90%)
I don't frequent the Minecraft Survival, 1.9 Discussion and General Discussion forums anymore. Outside of this thread, those forums are eyeball-deep in stupid.
The only forums that have brains are the Redstone, Modding and Texture Pack forums.
@GordonChin: Go the SomethingAwful route, but even harsher? Very unlikely, but yes please.
Apparently, I am a camwhore. Nice to know. And I haven't even started yet
Unfortunately in all online forums, you are going to have troubles. You have to find a forum that best suits your needs at the current time, and find a niche for yourself.
I could give you about 20 forum sites links where I'm a member and show how that goes. I have been threatened. I have been put down to the oddest ends (on one site it was for having two mongrel dogs, whom I should apparently put down, out of their misery because they are not pdeigrees. They can talk all they want, but till I stop seeing an overabudance of Maltese's at the pounds and in the paper, they have no foot to stand on (they are currently overpopulating Australia with Malteses/Shitzu dogs. My dogs are bitzas yes, but they are big, hardy, farm dogs and I saved them from a place where they were about to get put down, instead of deliberating purchasing from the "so called breeders" who seem to pump dogs out like know tommorrow and blame pounds on other people.
Lots of my forums are made up of people usually older than my age, mums groups, frugals/farmers etc. And they are the MOST bitchy lot I have come across.
These forums may be "immature" and "whiny" but I have had a lot better reception and met a lot of nice people through here, which isn't the case for those other forums.
You just have to decide what you want in a community and join an appropriate one to suit your own needs.
