Notch needs to hire some of these modders. I mean they are doing what SHOULD be done with the game in a FRACTION of the time it takes for him to do anything.
I mean for example that Kingdoms mod.. holy crap. Look at the effort and time put into that. Look at some of the other work.
If he really wanted to get off his butt and make a game for "others" instead of for his own amusement he'd spend some of "our" money on the title and get stuff done.
Technically, he is. After official release, mods WILL be supported and be able to be added to the official release. (that means mods will become part of Vanilla.) While he won't be paying them, he will be allowing mod makers to code additional features.

Wrong, every single modder is doing half the work, at best, that the devs at Mojang have put into Minecraft. The modders are taking something they put no work or effort into and modifying it to fit what they want the game to do. Nothing more, nothing less. Without the work of Notch and the other devs there would be no mods. Period. They didn't have to work from scratch, Notch did.
Just waiting for Forge to officially release for 1.13.x to remove unneeded mobs from 1.13, like Phantoms, from the game because, in my gameplay based opinion, they add nothing of value to the game.
Fun fact: Clicking a bed every 30 minutes doesn't make you a better player, it makes you one who clicks a bed every 30 minutes. Wouldn't you rather just mod them out of the game completely?
I totally agree that the influence of the players must not be like "Make feature x" or "y has to be in the game" and that the developer has to make the decisions after all. Wishes of players are often unrealistic or just not suiting the rest of the game and the developer knows best how to make a balanced gameplay. But I just think Notch can't ignore everything the community says (for example the critique on the new terrain generator) or turn minecraft drastically into something different (I don't think he would ever do something that bad, it's only that when people say "It's Notch's game" they seems as if notch is allowed to do ANYTHING to the game but thats in my opinion not the case).
I think a good balanced game, that is what Notch is trying to make, is what the community will satisfy most in the end - even if there will be people missing some features.
Youalso have to assume a degree of consistency with the developer. Taking minecraft and turning it into a racing game would be a bad decision, but it would also be completly inconsistent of notch to make that decision. If you have a goal in mind as to what the game is and are moving towards it, you shouldn't be making a hard left turn and going to a different goal. The developer shouldn't listen to the fans when they say his goal should be 20 feet to the right. However, feedback from the players is still valauable, and you can listen to them without comprimising in what game you are making. Responding to feedback that the terrain generator needs improvement is not the same as listeneing to feedback that the game should be the aether mod. The core difference there is "This feature should be improved" as a opposed to "You should be doing this". Suggestions can be useful, still, since they can inspire the developer to get ideas, but there should be no implication that because players are asking for it, it should be included.
Its really not that "anything the developer does is fine", so much as "anything the develoepr would do is fine". Assigning blatantly incorrect hypothetical actions to the developer is meaningless, because that is not something they would actually do. This tends to mean that "anything the developer actually does is fine", since if they actually do it, it is something they would do.
So, since you seem to think you're an expert, tell us, what kind "creative/survival sandbox" things could he add? I'm serious, I want to know your opinion 'cause I can't think of many things he could add to such a wide genre.
Of course, we know that none of all the "RPGish things" they (because it's not just Notch, Mojang is a company, not a man) have added changes creative or survival sandbox in any way, but I'm curious about what kind of ideas would YOU add to the game keeping it as sandbox, but giving players new things. (And don't tell me new blocks, because that's just useless and can be easily modded, I'm talking about REAL features)
Give you a bunch of examples ..
Ropes (like the zipline mod is something that should have been added)
Fruit Trees
Different types of minerals and ores (uhh hello wool burns so you can't combine certain colors with lava)
I mean I could go on and on.
Look at some of the mods people have made already that already outpace the development of this game by miles. Problem is he owns the source and we are stuck waiting for an oblvious person who just lollygags his way through things. If it were not for jeb I dont know where this would be.
Sure it's notches game but notches fallibility makes enjoyment of the game more difficult. Also the fact that two people are coding for over 1 million is just an absurd ratio; all the more reason i hope competitors copy the F outta MC and innovate and develop new ideas regardless of how blatant their clones are..

So if Minecraft had not sold, Notch could co ntinue with his plan...but if it sold well he should abandon it?
Guys, Minecraft has always been a pre-release game. A game that's not finished. I like eating cookie dough as much as the next guy, it tastes great.
But I'm not gonna smack a tub of cookie dough out of the chef's hand and tell him putting it in the oven is wrong.
The legend of zelda is a sandbox game, and it has a story and goal.

Edit:
The term "Sandbox" refers to any game with an open world
No, the Legend of Zelda series are adventure games.
"Sandbox" refers to open-world games where you can do anything you want. A real-life sandbox is a box of sand, but you can make it into whatever you want. That's where the "Sandbox" style games got their name.
Words have meanings and you can't just use them however you please or the entire system of language breaks down.
Talking about battlefield 3 when he's got a month to release.
I have a feeling the "code polish up" period was mainly just a ploy so he could relax and jerk off the last month.
He should just sell the rights to this game and let some people take it to where it needs to be.
Or someone needs to make a similar genre sandbox game with high rez textures and all the features. If a major producer got behind it and this game actually HAD some competition (similar type 3d game) I'm sure their efforts would be doubled. Either way competition helps both products.
He should just sell .. make his money and then he can play all the other games he wants to play and tinker at his own leisure.
A sandbox is a game without arbitrary limits or goals. Unlike 1.9.
A. by that definition, no sandbox is a game. At best they are classified as a toy.
B. Even the most open game has limits. without defined limits, you have nothing. The limits provide the structure that makes everything else possible. Limits provide support, and makes it actually possible to do things.
C. Minecraft is not meant to be a pure sandbox. There is creative mode for that. Minecraft is a game, built on a sandbox. As such, it has imposed rules and limits, things that counter you, yet retains the core openess. It has always been like this since the start of survival mode. Is not the light system itself an arbitrary limit? You need to place torches to keep monsters from spawning, you need to gather resources for better tools, you need to find food for health, etc. Nothing fundamentally different has been added. Adding in a giant monster you can kill to ge a "you win" screen does not magically change the fundamental nature of the game. Adding in more things you can spend your resources on to fight mobs does not change the fundamental nature of the game. Minecraft is still the same fundamental game it was in 1.7.

He has all the money he needs. He has said many times that he is making minecraft becasue that is what he wants to do. And a month to bug fix does not mean he is going to spend every waking moment fixing bugs. I never understood the attitude of "Notch is doing something in his free time, he is being lazy!".
And there are a whole slew of minecraft clones being made. Somehow, none of them are taking off and becoming wildly popular.

Listen everyone, what I'm saying is Notch instead or RPGish features, he should add new blocks and mobs, like the mooshroom and the mushroom biomes. That's nice features that don't affect the genre of the game in any way.

Some people have the exact opposite opinion of you. Deal with it.
It's great when people make a wonderful, salient point by using hyperbole, as the OP did.
It's even better when the person on the other end is still unable to admit defeat under the weight of such a strong argument, and actually goes "yes, yes it does".
That's all anyone needs to see to understand the mindset.

Seriously, "Yes" is the only correct answer to the original question.
Legally Notch can do ANYTHING he wants to the game and NO ONE is entitled to a refund of their money or any say in the matter.
No one asked if that was ethically, or just morally, the right thing to do.
