I recently checked minecraft.net, and I saw a post from one of the developers about minecraft becoming free to play. Would this help? A lot of trolls would join, this would absolutely RUIN multiplayer servers, and make the forums OVERLOADED. Minecraft would gain tonnes of publicity, what are your thoughts?

EDIT: What if we gave free players indev version, or alpha, without multiplayer?

Minecraft is doing great right now, so why change it? I agree that the forums would become overloaded. Also i don't think they would do this because look at the people who already have accounts. How do you think they feel if they heard their 20-30 dollars was for nothing

No. It would annoy those who paid like me and it would be overrun by 8 year olds like roblox is right now. If we take that route i'm gonna quit minecraft.

Notch will do what HE wants to on that kind of things. Not YOU, a random MCF user.

No way. Notch and the rest of Mojang work too hard on this game not to get $20 of bill payment for each purchase. This is his living. Companies like Blizzard can make their games free to play because they're already freaking rich. Mojang is still small, and needs to grow some. If Minecraft is free, they'll never grow.

Besides, like the above comments say, the millions who already paid would be ticked. Of course, I bought it in alpha. It was cheap back then.

Never make Minecraft free to play. Ever. It would ruin the SMP community, and all these free player greifers would take up slots and destroy peoples creations. Nope.

so you'd rather have a cape made of pixels that you cant even see than a great multiplayer community with little or no greifers? Fail.

i think minecraft should NOT be free. its like every other game, you pay you play.

The 2 people who voted yes don't have minecraft And/Or Trolls who want to get in. If they want to troll us is $20-30 a pop.

All character have capes i'm sure. The cape isn't an entity so its more like it just gets customized so you can see it.

It is free to play, you just have to buy it first....

I love how everyone assumes that the free to play players will be griefers. And yes, the plan is for Minecraft to be updated, until general interest starts to fall, then it becomes free to play and open source.

Anyways, I think we have our answer. It would screw up the SMP community and result in frustration and ragequits from the veterans of Minecraft. Of course, they already have the PCGamer demo. We can't just give them some crap version of Minecraft. If Mojang wants to make sales, we can't give them what they're not gonna get.

Sorry for double posting but we are actually already letting people play an older version of minecraft, see if you have been on the website you should already know this.... so did you just torrent it? Hmmm..?

I'm not seeing how it would screw up the community. Yes, there would be newbs, but even the current community has some. And, if someone is really worried about their server, they can always whitelist it. Or, if someone does grief, roll it back.

Because new player destroy things and don't follow the rules because they want to see how minecraft works so they figure out by holding left click you can break things and also sometimes kill players without reasoning.

That whole arguement is *completely* unfounded in any sort of graspable truth. And like I said before, if you don't want new players, a server can be whitelisted.
