If any one ever sets something like this up pm me on the fourm id be interested in looking at it in action but it might have to wait tell release when hopefully the server code is more efficient and is capable of handling more players

It's not a question of code (well sorta) it's hardware. I've heard rumors of 50+ servers hosting through a VPS with minimal lag. Those setups end up warranting players pay a subscription or "donation" as the cost skyrockets for the host. You wont be doing anything over 10 players on a home grown dedicated server.
My advice is, find a good VPS company with good pricing or be a NASA astrophysicist willing to risk their job...
Try and trawl through the Minecraft server listings too someone may have already had this idea.
In that video they are on a limited world size something of that scale just wouldn't be possible on a normal server. There are some diff rent ways you could get minecraft to run with alot of players but wouldent be easy. I remember hearing an idea for a bukkit plugin that would allow mass hybrid p2p servers or more then one server hosting it but i don't know what happend if it ever got deved. Becuase even if you used some tricks to by pass the hardware limit you are going to hit a bandwidth problem also and internet hosting is expensive.
Ignoring the technical problems of basically hosting a mmo with server code not made for it.
It is a cool idea that should be done at some point.
Out side of Administrative acumen? So essentially role play with a system? An admin would be akin to a god rather then a king?
Sounds interesting.
That is if the server isn't role-playing divine autocracy... Then you'd have to be the peasant!
OHH! also :Insert comment implying that President and Criminal are synonymous!:

Also, players don't need food and shelter; they only make survival easier.
Limited map size the starvation plugin for bukkit
...someone found my hidden agenda
Anyway, according to this yogcast got 2000+ on one server. does not look playable but it's far more than we would need.
i guess it would be a matter of money (real life money) to host a server right?
