Even after release, Minecraft wont be done, there will still be updates and new features, its more of a milestone than anything else, like they will start selling it in stores. Development won't stop, and I like it that way.
Look at the news front page; there's quite a few tidbits of information from E3.
Hahaha! I knew 11-11-11 wasn't going to be the release date, though there's no specific date mentioned. Quite frankly, I couldn't give a toss when the 'official' release date is. I just love the fluidity of the game's state.

I like the fact that development will never be "Done" if Minecraft lacks new features and such, t=we will need a replacement, Mojang is making a good decision by attempting to keep the market.
So what? They can't get rid of memory leaks properly, too. Among other things.
Human beings aren't perfect, you know, they fail sometimes (actually it happens quite often). That's why failblog exists.
True dat, I also don't think we should care about a release, Minecraft won't just go away, Mojang is a poorly managed company, yet they have created on of my favorite games.
Oh, please. Can't you guys just enjoy the game and appreciate the relaxed pace at which the game is developed? Compared to other, bigger companies who rush their titles and release unfinished, bug-riddled games that never get patched properly, I much prefer this.

This is merely a symptom of the larger issue, which is that Notch is really mishandling Minecrafts development. They need more people working on it, and a much more organized approach to updates and development. A firm launch date would be a nice means of keeping them on track and focused, which is something they seem to struggle with.

Instead of being rushed out and not patched properly, you prefer it being developed at a snails pace while still not being patched properly nor given adequate content updates? I love Minecraft, but this perpetual Beta doesn't really improve much of anything when development is so scatter shot.

I'm sorry if I gave off the wrong impression here. Of course I would appreciate it if updates were more frequent, but honestly, it doesn't bug me all that much, and I don't get why it would bug others either. Yes, updates have become less frequent after the transition from alpha to beta, and that's sad, but we have (IMO) more than enough content to keep us busy for a good while, and we also have a wonderful modding community if need be.
Like I said, I don't see the reason why any aspect of this game should be rushed out and finished.
IIRC, Notch has even said that he wants to focus mostly on content during the beta and do more of the bugfixing when the full version is out, and that is why I don't have any obligations against all the bugs that have been in the game for a good while and not yet been fixed.

I don't really think much will change per se when release comes, its more a mile stone then anything at this point. I just think the lackluster development MC has seen from the team is unfortunate, it bothers me that such a novel and terrific game is saddled with devs that don't seem to have much passion for it and the "release" date getting pushed back just rather reinforces this.
I think the Modders are really the unsung heros of Minecraft. Notch gets a lot of acclaim for creating MC (as he should). But if the modders weren't here adding new and interesting content every week, I doubt the game would be as big as it is. Vanilla just doesn't have as much going for it as it should at this stage of development.

I can see why you feel that way. I believe the real problem the developers face lies more in laziness than a lack of passion. With the game reaching this level of popularity, they could definitely do with a bigger group of developers.
I don't use any mods except for a texture pack, but the modders are definitely doing a fantastic job at keeping the game interesting for more content-hungry players. They deserve all the praise they can get and more. Same goes for the people who create custom maps and actually make a proper game out of what really is just a sandbox with creatures added to it.
Why does this matter? Every big budget, multi-million dollar game out there gets delayed these days. Every single one of them. I don't remember any recent game that doesn't give a date of release the first time and then change it a month or two later. Do you really think this is new?
Besides, all I've ever heard was that Notch hoped they could release MC by 11/11/11. Anytime he ever mentioned it, it never sounded official. He was just optimistic for it.

Indeed, the things these people have created never cease to amaze me.
It looks like we need to change the release date for Minecraft to be able to get a good venue for MinecraftCon. 11/11/11 is fully booked. One week later, perhaps? I’ll post more details as soon as we’ve decided and booked a venue.
...to stuff about development pace and such?

Why do people keep jumping from the stated facts: ...to stuff about development pace and such?
You beat me to it! Mojang couldn't find a good place to host MineCraftCon in Las Vegas for the release celebration on 11/11/11 due to the good places all being booked up then, so they will change the release to fit with when they can reserve a good location. I guess they have to be able to justify the $90 a head. :wink.gif:
