Anyone else think it's too much? I bought it back in "alpha" so it wasn't nearly as expensive... but a few days ago I paid $9.99 for a beautiful indie game called Terraria. And that's when I realized that Minecraft is... well... not worth the price.
Now this has nothing to do with the fact that I enjoy Terraria more than Minecraft. I'm talking about the fact that Notch/Mojang is charging about $20 for an unfinished indie game. Even if it was "finished," there are so many great indie games out there for $15, $10, even $5. What makes Minecraft so special that it's worth $20 for a "beta" copy and $25 when it's a "complete" game?
Anyway, just something I started thinking about... Not looking to get into any arguments on here or anything so I'll just leave you all with this.

Minecraft is worth 10 times its price. Terraria is worth one tenth its price.
....is perfectly reasonable, almost too reasonable. I'd be willing to pay full price ($40-$50) for it. It has more replay value than any other game I've played, including MMORPGs.
To be completely honest and frank, the price you are giving to play Minecraft, is actually less than fair. Minecraft could cost 50 bucks and a lot of people would still buy it! if you think it costs too much at the price it is today, go check yourself and stop comparing this wonderful game with shitty 2D RPG games.
to everyone who thinks Terraria is a rip off of Minecraft: you mad? Terraria is in no way, shape, or form a rip-off. a rip-off is something that blatantly RIPS the gameplay, graphics, and unique ideas of another game.
Terraria is instead a niche scrounger. it's a game that exploits a newly opened niche. that niche being a free-roaming adventure game in which the landscape is fully manipulatable.
oh, and you can craft some stuff.
Minecraft wasn't even the front-runner of this genre of game - from what i understand, Infiminer was. Minecraft only made it immensely popular. now that it's opened the floodgates, anyone's allowed to try and get a piece.
it's perfectly reasonable to enjoy Terraria more, and i know many people (including myself) who do, because it's actually very surprisingly different from Minecraft, in that it's big in the adventure aspect and very slow in the creating aspect. it has something called "goals". it's a shame there are so few. but once more are added, the replay value should shoot up.
The price has basically been established since Alpha I believe in which is was 50% off beta is 25% and the full will be full price. Which means the price will only go up. I will assume if more work goes into terria that the price will go up or it will be released as a dlc in which you have to pay extra money for.

There is something called "demand."
As long as people pay it, it will stay at that price. Once you create something that a lot of people talk about and use EVERYBODY wants in no matter the price. This is how Apple does business and it's a damn smart way to do it.
Now if they were screwing us over for $20 that would be another story.
Minecraft: a huge game that comes with loads of updates and is still in BETA.
Terraria: a 2D copy of Minecraft that deserves to be gotten rid of.
Are you ****ING kidding me!? It's WAY different than Minecraft. I mean, I get what you mean, but come on! It has a lot more differences than MC. I am sick and tired of people who think Minecraft is the only Sandbox/Building game in the world and any other game deemed "similar" are copies.
Terraria is quite a good game for its value, I agree it's worth 5 times its value.
It's a good digging centric RPG adventure that has many adventure/ exploration attributes I wish where in Minecraft. But due to it's 2d nature, it lacks when it comes to creative game play. The most you can do in Teraria is pixel art and cross sections of houses. You can't create anything truly clever like you can in Minecraft.
IMO Teraria is worth 5 times it's value, but same goes with Minecraft. I can't build an epic monument in Teraria (at least one I can see in one go) or a 1000 KM rail track or a intricate redstone circuit. But you can grind mindlessly in the corrupt areas to break a circle to then fight a giant worm boss for hours playing Teraria.
If I wanna dig mindlessly in dirt and stone for hours to grind for items i'll play Teraria. If I want to create something truly epic ill play Minecraft.
NOW if Re-Logic ever made a 3D Teraria. Then Minecraft may lose my interest, because it's the lack of the z axis that weakens Teraria IMO. Minecraft would be totally forgotten by me if a 3D Teraria had a redstone like feature and rail transport.
Mojang's staff may actually wanna start playing it seeming though they stabilized 1.6 they have the time. They should play it and get some inspiration. Because that game has things that a sizable portion of Minecraft's unimaginative playerbase craves ATM, Grindable content and loot.
All that being said Minecraft is still the superior game but only by one geometric axis.

"Turns out Terraria can cause time leaps. Should have a warning label or something. :ohmy.gif:"
"We just played maaany hours of Terraria. Very, very fun! :biggrin.gif:"
All from Notch's twitter over the last 2 days. I think they are aware of it (and having a LOT of fun playing it). :smile.gif:
I think both games are easily worth the money I paid for them; they have provided PLENTY of entertainment for the money. Hell, if nothing else just by the funny drama playing out on the respective boards :laugh.gif:
At first I was resistant to the $20 U.S. for Minecraft but then my family went "Hey we can all play together!!!". $100 U.S. later we all play together on a server I can host in my home for NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE. Think about it, where can you get that much value? Heck I prolly have well over 1000 hours played myself. Admittedly the latest bugs introduced are driving me crazy but hey....that's to be expected. BTW, even after the 1.6.5 update, dying and dropping stuff still results in 1 hit disappearing items :sad.gif: so don't die - LOL

Beta Server Specs: AMD X2 4200+ proc (2.2 Ghz), 4 Gigs DDR2, 1.5 Terabyte data drive & 80 Gigabyte boot drive, Win 7 pro 64 bit. System load with 4 players >40%.
minecraft and terraria are both equally fun, but you got to remember. Terraria is on steam. Steam ALWAYS gives out low prices for games, so don't be surprised to see Terraria so low in price.

Minecraft is worth 10 times its price. Terraria is worth one tenth its price.
does that mean we get a refund? prolly not.
Get out, also..
You obviously haven't discovered the awesomeness that is Minecraft today, even on BETA.
If that happens, which I highly doubt, just remember that you got to play it before everyone else.
Agreed, UNLESS somebody actually buys me Terraria and I get to try it out, unless that happens my plea will be nonexistent.
Minecraft = $10 (what I got it for) = 600 hours of entertainment and counting
Is 600 hours of entertainment worth $10? Uh.. yeah!
i will, however, speak on the Terraria thing.
