I was in a wooden tower my friend made and jumped down a story to land on a bed but took normal fall damage. So I thought, beds and wool blocks should negate or partially block fall damage.
I understand water can already do this, but wool (and beds) could be much more convenient as you don't have to contain the water and wool could look better in your design. Not that realism matters too much, but wool makes more sense than water as falling a high distance still makes water feel like cement, whereas falling on an enormous pillow can actually save you. Like how in the movies a person runs off a building and flips to land on a large cushion.
This is not a needed change, but for the risk of a house of wool being set on fire, I'd like to be able to play and leap around inside without having to keep careful of fall damage. If not complete immunity to fall damage, it could be half or 3/4 negation of damage or whatever seems to be the most fair. So it would take 8 or so blocks to take half a heart of damage and two or 3 more blocks for a whole heart. Carpets would not block any fall damage because they are too thin.
Don't think this would be that game-breaking as water is probably more easily available than wool.
Also beds should make you bounce a little, just cuz jumping on beds is fun.
Why not use the block we already have that negates fall damage, the Slime Block? Just make so if a Soul Sand is under a Slime Block it negates the damage but doesn't bounce you. Soul Sand already affects other blocks like that. Ice for example.
Plus, it makes it harder to do and makes it more balanced.

...except slime block isn't in the game yet. If water already negates fall damage, then I see no reason to require diamonds and obsidian to be able to.. make an ugly fall-proof house. I'd like to build with wool, not a non-existant block and soulsand.

You can just play the Snapshots or wait for the release. Also, why would you even jump from the top of your house?
Neither is your fall negating wool. What's your point here?

Again, no idea what your message is here.

I'm being told to "just use" something that doesn't exist. That's my point.
Badprenup was implying that negating fall damage should be "balanced" in a way to need soulsand for it to work, which you need access to diamonds (or to very carefully construct a portal with buckets), meanwhile you can use said buckets to place water which is everywhere for a fall damage-negating block. It's just you can't make a house out of water.
It's pretty simple for all the fuss you people are making. Minecraft changes, and this is a sensible change. This is much like the argument over on the thread about fishing poles being able to snare dropped items. It's not game-breaking, and it makes sense all-in-all. The fact that it breaks current adventure maps is meaningless, as there have been a number of changes that have broken them before (hunger was a big one for a while there). You just learn to adjust.
Personally, I support this idea.

Slime Blocks are coming in 1.8. They are official, and there is no way your idea could be added any sooner than they are. IF by some miracle your idea was added next content update, it would be added at the same time as Slime Blocks.
Also, my idea makes way more sense in regards to existing game mechanics (using Soul Sand to influence a block that is on top of it), breaks exactly 0 maps, does not require a new item (that isn't already coming) like a Cushion block, and does not change the behavior of a block that has behaved a particular way for years.

Actually, it does exist. Not officially, but in snapshots as of now. Even then, what's the big deal? It's like you're getting your wish in a different way.
It's a little awkward to say because if Mojang came by right now, saw your idea, and was all "BlueCoin has a good idea that we're going to implement! Gold star for him!" It would still be something that didn't officially exist as of right now. Meaning that your idea would be in the exact same boat as that of slime blocks. I'm getting off track here.

My bad there, I missed Badprenup's post. Yeah, this argument here makes all too much sense. I can't imagine having a floor made of water either, though it wouldn't kill you to have a segment of water in just the areas for the safe falls...
On the bright side, I do support. At the very least, where wool can reduce damage rather than negate it completely.

Wool comes in 16 colors I believe. Slime and Soulsand blocks come in 1 color each. Soulsand still slows you down more with slime under it like ice does, according to the wiki.
As Master_Hill_ said, changes are made, maps might get broken, and people can adjust. Hardened Clay exists now, so that can be used.
I don't like it. It would completely take away worry of falling. Just keep a piece of wool in your hot bar and every time you fall off a cliff or into a ravine spam click so it places the block right before you hit. Takes a fatal fall and turns it into just a heart or two of damage? That's game breaking to me. The game is easy enough as it is.
Also if you're worried about falling couple blocks down in your own house then you should plan it better.

you're assuming numbers here, you know what they say about assuming right? Either way, you're not supporting based assumptions which could be very well wrong

Because it's not like we can do this with the water bucket already.
...oh wait, we can. Water bucket is even more powerful than wool with my idea. You can use it to save you from falls, as an elevator both up and down, a way to turn lava lakes into walkable surfaces, a way to keep mobs away from you... etc etc. All wool would do is require you to place it down right before hitting the ground. Are you suggesting the water bucket should be removed from the game, for reasons similar as to why my wool idea shouldn't be in the game?

I'm back from my hibernation. Most likely gone so don't pm me.
No support for now.
I have a new account called "Mushroomsock" now, so please do not send me PMs.
Which is why I suggested partial fall damage immunity. Though there are many other blocks that could be used.

That would not be enough. It would still allow you to survive certain falls.

Exactly.
And like BlueCoin said, This will be a unique fall damage reducer but it's not very needed but... why not?
Partial Support.
