A few updated ago (Although most have forgotten) we got dyeable collars for our dogs. Then, we recently got name tags so we can name our dogs. It can't get any better, can it?
Maybe...
Introducing... Collars.
Collars are a simple item crafted like so...
MECHANICS Collars will be a new mechanic added to tamed wolves, aka dogs.
Once tamed, a dog will still have a collar like it does now, but if you shift + R Click on your dog a menu will come up, similar to a horse, where you can place a crafted collars.
Crafted collars are brown at basic, but can be dyed to current collar colors. On a dog, they will have a medal/tag unlike a normal collar. But what exactly will be special about these collars?
ENCHANTING
Unlike a normal collar, which is just a small detail on your dogs, this collar can be enchanted. All dogs are rather basic, and none are different from each other, but this would add some upgrades to your dogs. Unlike normal enchantments, the enchanting will be some what limited. When placed on dogs, enchanted collars will appear with an enchanted glow like all armor does.
These collars will have 2 unique enchantments.
These are the enchantments.
Thorns: Obtained at levels 9 - 30. Only can get up to II.
All Types of Protection: Obtained at levels 1-30. Only can get up to II.
Fangs: Obtained at levels 9 - 30. Increases damage dealt by 1.50 points. Only can get up to III.
Speed:Obtained at levels 14 - 30. Increases speed by 20%. Only can get up to II.
RENAMING The problem with name tags is that they're really hard to obtain. But if they were easy to obtain you could make as many entities undespawnable as you wanted. Collars can be renamed and placed on dogs to give them a name. Since they can only go on dogs, and since dogs can't despawn anyway, this would be no problem.
OCELOTS Since cats don't really have collars like dogs, it would be nice to also use these collars on cats. Unlike dogs, cats won't have a menu to place the collar, instead you just right click the cat with a collar in hand. Enchantments won't work on cats , since they don't really attack anything.

Was going to say no support, until I saw the enchantments section. Collars are already implemented, as you mentioned, but they don't have much flexibility.
A really good boost for Wolves I can say. Armour would be cool, but that is not for now. I support!
As cool as armor would sound, most armor in Minecraft, other than gold armor, has been placed at sort of a realistic standard.
Armour is never really used on dogs because
1. Not a lot of dogs would really bear the weight
2. It would slow down the dogs by a lot
3. It would most likely limit their ability to attack
The enchantments are a little wonky, but i do think protection and, more to the point, Thorns is a good idea for dogs.
Also.. ocelots can attack, they just don't. I've seen ocelots attack chickens, and a domesticated cat attack a skeleton. the trick to getting cats to attack is to have the hostile mob attack it, which they usually don't.
Why not just remove the existing collar? Redundancy is not a good gameplay idea; it leads to confusion.
Because the existing collar is what identifies a wolf as a tamed wolf.
Its sitting position and hardly different texture are the only things that make it look different from a regular wolf.
Unless you mean just removing the current collar coloring system, which that is fine.
Not to mention, I added the medal/tag part of the collar so it would be different from a regular collar.
What I don't like at all is that you have two entirely separate ways to handle collars according to wether them mob is a wolf or a cat. It should be only ONE consistent way all around.

The only problem is that ocelots can't attack, so the enchantments wouldn't be very useful, but sure.

I never would have thought to put enchantments on collars for dogs O_O It sounds Amazing
A separate versions would be redundant.
They both wear collars and this is a collar.
I think the item should be called just a "collar" from now on.
Because the existing collar is what identifies a wolf as a tamed wolf.

It also gives some incentive to use leather (which is a bit of a useless item) so that you can identify which wolf is yours.
True.
Though I don't think I'll decide that its necessary to remove the current collars for my idea to be implemented.
